Warm Up 11/28
What happens to electrons when an ionic bond
forms?
What happens to electrons when a covalent bond
forms?
Metallic Bonding
What are the names of N3F5 and Na3P?
What are the formulas for rubidium arsenide and
silicon disulfide?
Metallic Bonding
Metallic Bonds
Each metal atom contributes its valence
electrons to “sea” of electrons.
The metal atoms are held in a crystal structure
by a metallic bond - the attraction between the
positively charged metal ions and the negatively
charge sea of electrons.
Alloys
An alloy is a mixture of two or more elements
(at least one metal) that has a combination of
characteristics of the elements it is made of.
Types of Alloys
Substitutional – Elements of similar
size mix and take the place of each
other, there is a visible difference
between the alloy and the elements
Interstitial- One atom is much smaller
than the other and fills in the spaces
between the larger atoms. This
typically adds strength but is not
visible.
