Medway Mocktails
Thank you for claiming your copy of the Medway Mocktails Recipe Pack.
This pack includes 10 original recipes to encourage people to make alcohol-free drinks for
picnics, BBQ’s, and summer events, rather than alcoholic alternatives. All were submitted
by local people living or working in Medway.
Why should I swap from alcoholic drinks to mocktails?
Regularly drinking over the recommended lower risk guidelines can lead to serious health
problems, such as liver disease, cancer of the mouth, stroke, heart attack, reduced
fertility, and even breast cancer in women. Even small amounts of alcohol will have an
affect on your co-ordination, behaviour and decision-making ability.
The absorption rate of alcohol into the body is affected by many different factors such as
gender, weight, height, age, and diet, so you can never be sure of how your body will react.
The NHS recommends the following:
l Women should not regularly* exceed drinking more than 2-3units
l Men should not regularly* exceed drinking more than 3-4units
l Every week you should have at least 2 alcohol free days, and if you've had a
heavy drinking session you should avoid alcohol for at least 48 hours afterwards
How many calories are in some alcoholic drinks?
A standard glass of wine (175ml) (12% ABV) = 2 UNITS
Equivalent to 126 calories such as a Cadburys Heroes miniature bar
A pint of 5% strength beer = 3 UNITS
Equivalent to 170 calories such as 1 packet of McCoys salted crisps
A standard bottle (330ml) of Alcopop (5%) = 1.3 UNITS
Equivalent to 237 calories such as 3 Lees teacakes

It is also important to be aware that some mocktails are made with carbonated drinks (e.g. fizzy drinks) and fresh
fruit juice. These can be high in sugar and acidity, which can damage your teeth. However, if you regularly clean
your teeth twice a day (evening being the most important time) then occasionally drinking these drinks and
maintaining a good oral health routine should not cause any harm to your teeth.
*Regularly means drinking this amount every day or most days of the week
