Cyclone devastates Vanuatu
A CYCLONE has caused destruction in Vanuatu, an island nation in the South Pacific Ocean.
Vanuatu’s president, Baldwin Lonsdale, has said the country
is in need of urgent help after Cyclone Pam swept across the
islands last Saturday (14 March). Aid agencies say it is one of
the worst disasters to hit Vanuatu, one of the world’s poorest
nations.
Communications are currently down, so the final number of
people who have died is not yet known (11 people had been
confirmed dead as First News went to press). In the capital, Port
Vila, almost every building has been damaged by the powerful
winds and torrential rain. Trees have been knocked down,
schools and hospitals have been destroyed and many family
homes have been completely flattened, leaving thousands
homeless.
Britain has sent an RAF plane carrying supplies, such as
shelter and lanterns, to help those in need. The UK has pledged
£2 million to aid agencies working in Vanuatu. Australia and
New Zealand have also sent supplies and other countries have
promised to help.
