Eircode
Over the next few weeks every address in Ireland will be given a new postcode. This will be known as
Eircode. This code will then be added to the last line of your current address.
Eircode will be the last line of your address.
The code will be 7 characters long and will be a mix of letters and numbers. There will be 2 parts to it.
The first 3 characters will show what part of the country you
live in.
The final 4 characters will be completely different for each
and every house, flat or business.
Having your own code means that it will be easier to find your address, especially in rural areas where
houses do not have numbers. This means emergency services such as an ambulance or fire service will
now be able to locate an address more easily, saving valuable time.
In the coming weeks every household and business will receive a letter informing them of their new
Eircode.
Tragedy in America
On 16th June, 6 young Irish students lost their lives and 7 were seriously injured when an apartment
balcony collapsed in the city of Berkeley in California. All the students were at a 21st birthday party in a 4th
floor apartment. They were standing out on the balcony when it suddenly crashed to the ground.
All of them, except for one, had arrived in America on student visas to work for the summer months. Every
year as many as 8,000 Irish students travel to America on the J1 visa, enjoying an experience of a lifetime.
As news of this tragedy reached Ireland, parents and friends spent anxious hours trying to find out if their
child was one of the dead or injured. It was indeed every parent’s worst nightmare. 5 of the victims were
from Dublin and one girl was American, of Irish parents.
The memories of these young and beautiful people will forever be in the hearts of their families and
friends. May they rest in peace.
