Carnegie Library, 1914-1915
With Carnegie and community support in place
and library assets transferred from the Literary
Union, the Northport Public Library received its
charter from the state in June 1914. Construction
started on the new library building on the corner
of Main Street and Woodside Avenue the following
October. Harry E. Donnell, a well-known New York
City architect, designed the tapestry brick building.
Mr. Donnell was related to the Delamater family,
whose estate covered most of Eaton’s Neck at the
time. Vail and Call, a local firm, was the builder.
On December 13, 1915, the library celebrated
its formal opening with an evening of music and
speeches. A Brooklyn Eagle article described the
building’s interior: “The north end is arranged for a
children’s room while the other end is for adults.
At each end tables of proper size to meet the requirements have been placed, and an electric light
plug has been so arranged in each that reading
lamps can be utilized. Passing down the stairway,
the visitor enters a spacious lecture hall in the basement, with a raised platform at the north end.”
Thursday, March 11, 6:30-7:30 pm
Registration for this program began last month.
Please call the Library to see if there are openings.

Theodor (Dr. Seuss) Geisel, 1904-1991
“Think left and think right and think
low and think high. Oh, the thinks you
can think up if only you try.”
from Oh The Thinks You Can Think!
On March 2, 2004, the man we know as
Dr. Seuss —Theodor Geisel —would have been
100 years old. Dr. Seuss educated and entertained
both children and parents for more than 50 years.
He inspired children not only to think but to
“move mountains.” He started as a writer, illustrator, cartoonist, and advertising artist in the
1920s and 1930s. His work appeared in a number of
popular magazines including Judge, College
Humor, Life, Liberty, and Vanity Fair. His career
as a children’s author began with the book And to
Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street in 1937.
In 1940, to protest isolationism in the U.S.,
Dr. Seuss turned to political cartoons. He also did
drawings for the U.S government and in 1942 he
joined the armed forces and was assigned to a documentary film-making unit. Once the war was over
he returned to writing children’s books and making
films, winning three Academy Awards.
In 1954 he founded Beginner Books which was
acquired by Random House in 1960.
In his Beginner Book series, Dr. Seuss wrote
many modern classics for children including Green
Eggs and Ham, Fox in Socks, and The Lorax. At
the age of 82 he wrote You’re Only Old Once, the
most autobiographical of his books. The last book
published before he died in 1991 was Oh, the Places
You’ll Go!
Dr. Seuss’s legacy will live on—more than
200 million copies of his books have been translated into 15 different languages. Nearly 30 of his
books have been adapted for television or video.
Dr. Seuss was a poet, a master of word and rhyme.
In his stories he used wit, rhythm, whimsy, oddball
characters, and significant themes—greed, prejudice, environmental irresponsibility and intolerance —to illustrate the quirkiness of human nature.
His respect for children can be
summed up in a quote from
Horton Hears a Who,
“Don’t give up. I believe in
you all.
A person’s a person no
matter how small.”
