Shakespeare Plays and settings: Since Clann Wars is set to Shakespeare, (yes Shakespeare did write some plays that took place in Medieval Times, Roman Times, Elizabethan Times, Tudor…), the possibilities for garb are endless. To help some that are still stumped, such as myself, the following is a tediously brief listing of plays and settings followed by a more tedious listing of Shakespearian Quotes: All’s Well that Ends Well Setting: Rousillon, Paris, Florence, and Marseilles Antony and Cleopatra Setting: Parts of the Roman Empire As You Like It Setting: Forest of Arden The Comedy of Errors Setting: Ephesus Coriolanus Setting: Rome, Corioli, and Antium Cymbeline Setting: Britain, Italy Hamlet Setting: Elsinore Julius Caesar Setting: Rome; afterwards, Sardis and near Philippi King Lear Setting: Britain Love’s Labour’s Lost Setting: Navarre Macbeth Setting: Scotland and England Measure for Measure Setting: Vienna The Merchant of Venice Setting: Partly in Venice, and partly at Belmont, the seat of Portia on the Continent The Merry Wives of Windsor Setting: Windsor Shakespeare Plays and settings Continued: A Midsummer Night’s Dream Setting: Athens, and a wood nearby Much Ado about Nothing Setting: Messina Othello Setting: Venice (for first act) and a sea-port in Cyprus Pericles, Prince of Tyre Setting: various countries Romeo and Juliet Setting: Verona and Mantua The Taming of the Shrew Setting: Sometimes in Padua, and sometimes in Petruchio's home in the country The Tempest Setting: The Sea; afterwards an Island Timon of Athens Setting: Athens Titus Andronicus Setting: Rome Troilus and Cressida Setting: Troy The Two Gentlemen of Verona Setting: Verona, Milan, and the frontiers of Mantua Twelfth Night Setting: A city in Illyria, and the sea-coast nearby The Winter’s Tale Setting: Sometimes in Sicilia, sometimes in Bohemia http://shakespeare-online.com/plays/playsettings.html Play Historical Time of Action Troilus and Cressida 1194–1184 BC (Trojan War) King Lear 800 BC Coriolanus 494-490 BC Timon of Athens 431-404 BC (Peloponnesian War) Julius Caesar 44-42 BC Antony and Cleopatra 40-30 BC Cymbeline AD 16 Titus Andronicus AD 250–450 (Late Roman period) Hamlet roughly 9th century Macbeth AD 1039-1057 King John AD 1199-1216 Romeo and Juliet AD 1303 (lasting a few days) Richard II AD 1398-1400 All's Well That Ends Well 14th century Henry IV, Part I AD 1402-1403 Henry IV, Part II AD 1403-1413 Henry V AD 1414-1420 Henry VI, Part I AD 1422-1444 Henry VI, Part II AD 1445-1455 Henry VI, Part III AD 1455-1471 Richard III AD 1477-1485 Measure for Measure roughly AD 1485 Henry VIII AD 1521-1533 Othello AD 1570 (when Cyprus was invaded by the Turks) Play Historical Time of Action The Merry Wives of Windsor time of Shakespeare The Merchant of Venice time of Shakespeare The Taming of the Shrew time of Shakespeare Twelfth Night time of Shakespeare http://shakespeare-online.com/keydates/chronologyofcontent2.html Useful Shakespearian Quotes: Hamlet, II:2 There is nothing either good or bad, But thinking makes it so. Much Ado About Nothing, V:1 There was never yet philosopher that could endure the toothache patiently. Hamlet, III:3 Words without thoughts never to heaven go. Othello, II:3 How poor are they that have not patience. Richard II, I:1 The purest treasure mortal times afford, is spotless reputation. Two Gentlemen of Verona, I:2 They do not love that do not show their love. The Merchant of Venice, I:3 The devil can cite Scripture for his purpose. An evil soul producing holy witness Is like a villain with a smiling cheek, A goodly apple rotten at the heart. O what a goodly outside falsehood hath! King Lear, III:6 He's mad that trusts in the tameness of a wolf, a horse's health, a boy's love, or a whore's oath. As You Like It, V:4 O Sir, we quarrel in print, by the book, as you have books for good manners. I will name you the degrees. The first, the Retort Courteous; the second, the Quip Modest; the third, the Reply Churlish; the fourth, the Reproof Valiant; the fifth, the Countercheck Quarrelsome; the sixth, the Lie with Circumstance; the seventh, the Lie Direct. Pericles, Prince of Tyre, III:1 Oh! You gods, why do you make us love your goodly gifts, and snatch them straight away? Useful Shakespearian Quotes Continued: MacBeth, III:4 The time has been That, when the brains were out, the man would die, And there, an end. But now they rise again With twenty mortal murders on their crowns, And push us from our stools. Measure for Measure, II:2 O, it is excellent to have a giant's strength, But it is tyrannous to use it like a giant. Julius Caesar, IV:3 A friendly eye could never see such faults. Twelfth Night, I:1 If music be the food of love, play on. MacBeth, I:3 Have we eaten on the insane root That takes the reason prisoner? The Merry Wives of Windsor, III:2 Defend your reputation, or bid farewell to your good life for ever. Measure for Measure, I:1 Heaven doth with us as we with torches do; not light them for themselves. Othello, III:3 He that filches from me my good name, robs me of that which not enriches him, but makes me poor indeed. Hamlet, V:1 Lay her i' the earth, and from her fair and unpolluted flesh may violets spring! Richard III, I:4 'Tis better to be brief than tedious. http://quotations.about.com/cs/shakespearequotes/a/bls_Shakespeare.htm Hopefully, some will find the above useful in their selection of what will be appropriate for Clann Wars! I look forward to seeing everyone there! Lord Giovanni Citadel of the Southern Pass Medieval Tymes 10445 Cronus St. El Paso, TX 79924
