Check out our newly updated website. It is mobile friendly for any of your devices. We
added new information and graphics, upgraded the locator with mapping for retail locations. In addition, we added the nutritional information pages to the “Flavors” page, so
you can download the specs you need for the flavors you sell. The consumers will be
able to scan a new QR code that points to the flavors page and find that information as
well. We have new “nutritional warning” decals available for your cabinets with the
code printed on it (see page 4).
Our order forms are still available on the special “Distributor/Retailer” page by using

It sure seems like summer, too. Here in mid-Michigan, it is hot and muggy—the perfect
reminder that summer has arrived. The next 10 days look hot and summer-like as well
with temperatures in the 80’s and 90’s! We hope you have great weather where you are
and can take advantage of it to SELL, SELL, SELL.

This is your time, ice cream retailers: July is National Ice Cream Month! A time to celebrate, promote, and SELL ice cream like no other time of the year. Get your store decorated, set your promotions (ideas available in this and past “Sundae Times” issues on
our website, “Distributor and Retailer” page), and plan your celebration menu/specials.
Get your store noticed by calling your local paper to invite the reporter out for an ice
cream treat and the history of ice cream. They are going to cover an ice cream store, it
should be yours!
Sunday, July 17, is National Ice Cream Day, so plan something special for that
day, too. Perhaps an ice cream social for your town? Pay one price for a scoop of vanilla and they add the toppings from a topping bar? Sell special patriotic treats. Call the
Liberty Tax service and see if you can rent their mascot (Statue of Liberty), or let them
hand out business cards for a few hours to draw attention to your store. Make/buy a
large ice cream cone out of poster board and balloons for the mascot to hold in place of
the torch.
Promotion Planner:
What will you do to promote our industry and your
place in particular? Sure, if its hot, your regulars will
come out and buy ice cream, but what about those
travelling for vacation who may not know where you
are located. Find out-of-the-box ways to get your
name and location out there. Are you using social media? Reviews on Yelp, information in the on-line yellow pages, etc.? If you are selling only Ashby’s handdip ice cream, we have your name and location on our
website. And with our new upgrade, loyal Ashby’s
followers will get a list of all the retailers around their
location on their mobile devices! Be sure to check out
www.ashbysicecream.com/locator and verify that your
store information is included and accurate.
Another easy, inexpensive way to reach new customers
is
with cross
promotions.
Ask the
diner next
door if
you can
provide
placemats
with
your advertising
on them.
In
exchange,
you can
hand out
their
breakfast
menu
for them.
How
about the
car wash
down the
street? When the customer pays, the attendant can
hand out your coupons and vis versa.
Decorate your store in celebration of “America the
Beautiful” and “Ice Cream the Beautiful” for the
month of July. Celebrate our democracy with a mock
election: make up a red, white, and blueberry sundae
with two names: “The Donald” and the “Hillary”.
Whichever name is requested the most will give you
incite on whom our next president will be!
Support and participate in your town’s Independence
Day activities: put a float in the parade and hand out
flyers and coupons (good for another day). Sponsor
games or activities with treats from your menu as prizes. Sponsor contests for charity: ice cream eating,
candidate look-a-like, best pj’s, best parade float, best
store decorations in your town, etc.
Summertime Fun:
We know it will be hot and sunny this summer, so be
prepared with your promotion schedule and “Special
of the Day” calendar. To give you a couple of ideas,
we created the dessert items below:
Cookie Crumble Pie:
Fill a chocolate crumb pie crust with softened AS
Cookie Jar or O-O-Oreo ice cream layers. Smooth
and mound in the middle. Pipe cold fudge topping
around the edges of the pie and in the middle. Add
“rosettes” of whipped topping and cherries in the middle of the rosettes for garnish.
Peanut Butter Landslide Sundae:
Pile two scoops of Ashby’s PB Landslide off to one
side of a 12 oz. sundae cup. Drizzle hot fudge down
the side, and garnish with whipped cream, crushed
peanuts and/or chocolate “rock” candy, and a cherry.
Red, White, and Blue Parfait:
Layer Strawberry ice cream, whipped icing, Blue
Moon, and more whipped icing in a clear parfait dish.
Garnish with a cherry and a mini flag.
Independence Day Cookie Treats:
Scoop vanilla ice cream onto a large, sugar cookie and
let it soften just enough that you can add another cookie on top and press flat. Roll edges in red, white, and
blue sprinkles. Place in storage bag and freeze.

Q. Consumers are demanding more and more information about the ingredients in their food. As an ice cream
retailer, how do I help them get information without holding up the line of ice cream customers?
A. Ashby’s Sterling Ice Cream recently mailed out new “Nutritional Warning” decals that contain a code your customers
can scan to link to our website and nutritional information sheets for each of our flavors. Although you should also
have a set of the sheets in a notebook in your store, most people will be happy to use the scan code to view the information on their mobile device. If you need a sticker for your cabinet, please contact us.
