WELCOME TO EKATERINBURG!
International Young Physicists’s Tournament is a significant event for Ekaterinburg, and all the organizers have been
working hard to make sure it meets the
highest standards. For your convenience,
we opened a 24 hour IYPT 2016 Call
Center: +7 (343) 375-94-94.
The Call Center operators will answer
any questions related to the Tournament
events and your stay in Ekaterinburg.
About the city
In terms of population, Ekaterinburg
today is the fourth city in Russia after Moscow, St. Petersburg and Novosibirsk. More
than 1.5 million people live here. Ekaterinburg is the administrative center of the
Sverdlovsk region and a large transportation and logistics hub. Ekaterinburg is an
important industrial center famous for its
mechanical industry, heavy engineering,
metallurgy, printing industry, light and
food industry, military and industrial complex.

Ekaterinburg is the main administrative, cultural and scientific center of the
Ural region often called “The capital of the
Urals”. Modern Ekaterinburg is one of the
most attractive cities for running business
in Russia.
The city is situated on the east slope of
the Ural Mountains on the bank of the river
Iset. The history of the city started in the
18th century. Ekaterinburg was founded
in 1723 on the Dam that was built for the
plant construction. In the city center you
can see the monument to its founders Tatischev and De Gennin.
What is Ekaterinburg also famous for?
First of all, the city is situated on the border between Europe and Asia. The Ural
Mountains separate two parts of the world.
Not far from the city the obelisk notifies
the spot where the border is supposed to
be.
What about the sites of Ekaterinburg?
Actually, it will take more than one day to
explore all of them. It is very fascinating to

stroll around the center of the city which
is also called the History square. Walking
along the river you can come across the
monuments to the keyboard, The Beatles,
Michael Jackson, the invisible man and the
monument to the system unit. The street
art is also something that makes our city
special. You can even take part in a guided
tour which includes street art objects. You
can also take a self-tour that is called “The
Red Line”. It goes through the city center
and is marked by the red line you can easily
follow. With the help of your gadgets you
can listen to the description of all monuments and sites on your way.
Ekaterinburg is an important trade
center with more than 20 shopping and
entertainment malls. The largest of them
are MEGA, Greenwich, Alatyr, Uspensky,
Europe, Raduga-park and Karnaval.. A
popular shopping area is situated in the
central pedestrian street called Vaynera.
Ekaterinburg is the native city of many
famous people; one of the most renowned
natives of our city is Boris Yeltsin, the first
President of Russia. The name of Russia’s
first Emperor is also connected with Ekaterinburg.

The most northern skyscraper in the
world was built in Ekaterinburg. It is called
Vysotsky and it has 54 floors. On the top
of it there is the viewing point from which
you can see the whole city at a glance.
The sport life of the city is also active.
Our city is going to host several matches
of the UEFA World Championship in 2018.
Of course, the city is also famous for
its student life. Ural Federal University
(UrFU) hosting the Finals of the International Young Physicists’ Tournament is the
largest university in Ekaterinburg and in
the region. UrFU offers a wide range of
educational programs taught in Russian
and English for local and international students. Students from 80 countries of the
world study at the university.

EVENT VENUE
Currently the university is home to more
than 30 000 students from 80 countries
of the world and more than 2 000 faculty
members including top global experts in
the spheres of natural sciences, engineering and social sciences. Our 17 Institutes
offer more than 350 Bachelor, Master and
Doctoral Programs in natural sciences,
engineering, social sciences, humanities,
economics and management taught both
in Russian and in English. The number of
UrFU alumni exceeds 300 000 people.
Breakthrough studies are pursued in 72
research excellence centers. The university is open to international collaboration
having more than 500 partners all over
the world and being an active participant
of such initiatives as BRICS Network University, SCO Network University and CIS
University.
The Mission of Ural Federal University is
increasing competitiveness, re-industrialization, formation of human, scientific and
technological potential, sustainable modernization of traditional economy branches
and development of postindustrial economy branches of the Ural Federal District.

Dear guests of Ekaterinburg!
Throughout the tournament you will be
accompanied by specially selected English-speaking students - volunteers from
Ural Federal University.
Volunteers will accompany you at all
tournament events, show you around and
answer all your questions. If you need help feel free to contact the volunteers!
EXCURSIONS
Each team of participants will be accompanied by 2 BUDDIES. You will easily
find our volunteers in the areas of your accommodation and at the information desk.
Yeltsin Centre

Boris Yeltsin Museum is the first presidential museum in Russia opened on November 25. The Museum was created with
the participation of US design agency
Ralph Appelbaum Associates Incorpоrated.
The Museum houses nine exhibition areas.
The opening hall is Labyrinth depicting
the family story of the Yeltsins within the
framework of the 20th century turbulent
events. From there, a visitor enters a complex of rooms under the common name,
Seven Days that Changed Russia, to see
the story of the first Russian President and
his time.

Ekaterinburg Red Line
The “Red Line” is a tourist route that
traces a walking path 5.5 km around the
center of Ekaterinburg. It has been drawn
directly on the asphalt. Thanks to efforts
of the project authors and volunteers, 35
of the best tourist architecture sights, historical places, unusual monuments, points
of view were chosen and connected with a
red line drawn on the asphalt as a circular
walking route.

The Printing House
Address: 49 Lenin Avenue, Ekaterinburg.
A striking example of the constructivism
is the building of the printing house “Ural
worker” which was built in the 1930s by
the architect G. A. Golubev. Composition
of the building is based on the unification
of two different in length and features of
the buildings with vertical semi-circular
displacement of the staircase, allocated on
the facade color. Cut from the bottom to the
volume of the staircase is both a visor for
emergency entrance on the first floor of the

building. They built the printing house with
innovative at the time of technology - reinforced concrete skeleton.
The Printing house with the most recognizable elements of the constructivist style:
long volume with a flat roof, ribbon windows, rounded the corner and support on
a pillar - from the very beginning was intended to house the printing and publishing
house “Ural worker”.
Nowadays one of the most fashionable
night clubs of the city is situated in this
building.

ACCOMMODATION
Dormitory
Address: 144 Malyshev Street/66 Komsomolskaya Street, Ekaterinburg.
Upon arrival at the dormitory our volunteers will help you to register. During
the registration at the dormitory you will
receive a card with the names and contact
numbers of your team volunteers – buddies.
Also in the card you will find the time when
you team volunteers will be waiting for you
in the lobby at the 1st floor of the dormitory
to accompany you to UrFU building. Your
team volunteers will be holding the flag of
your country. You will need 15 minutes by
foot to get to 19 Mira Street. Please note
that it is not allowed to smoke and drink alcohol in the dorm.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT
PRACTICAL INFORMATION
Security & Access Rules
Your badge allows you to enter all Tournament events. Please, do not forget to
put it on!
We use a number of security measures
to provide maximum safety during the
Tournament. Ekaterinburg is surely a safe
city, but the legislation of the Russian Federation establishes special security rules
for the public events.
Communication
On your arrival, during registration
volunteers will provide each team with
a SIM-card. Please, insert it into your
mobile phone (ask the volunteer to help
if needed).
Metric System
Russia uses the standard metric system
of measurement.
Taxi
If you need to order a taxi or visit some specific places - please ask one of our volunteers for help.

Time System
In Russia, the 24 hours system is in use.
The AM / PM system is virtually not used.
Currency
Russia’s national currency is ruble. The
banknotes in use are: 10, 50, 100, 500,
1000 and 5000 rubles.
It is better to have a small amount of
cash with you, 100, 500 – 1000 rubles.
Some small trading shops or cafes do not
use the credit card terminals.
There are lots of ATMs of various banks
in the city for different types of cards, including Visa and Mastercard. Perhaps the
most convenient of them are Sberbank
cash machines.
Working Hours
Nearly all Russian public agencies work
from 9.00 till 17.00. Most of the commercial enterprises, however (shops, cafes,
etc.) are open till late night (22.00 –
23.00), some of them are 24-hours. The
sale of alcohol in the shops after 22.00 is
strictly prohibited by the law.

Weather
Unpredictable due to the continental
climate! However, in summer months it is
usually warm and sunny (+ 25-30 C).
The sun in Ekaterinburg sets late in
the summertime, around 23.00, and rises
quite early. During the solstice, 21th June,
the sun will set at midnight, and then start
rising over horizon already at 4.00.
Pharmacies
There are lots of pharmacies in the city;
many of them are working till late night.
Please, ask our Hotel volunteer to help you
to get to the pharmacy if you need one.
Personal Security
In general, Ekaterinburg is a safe city –
as safe as a large modern city with population of more than 1,5 million people. Still,
we would recommend you to follow some
useful rules for greater personal security:
-Please, comply with the common traffic regulations: cross the streets only at
traffic lights. The traffic might be rather
heavy in rush hours.
-Do not leave your personal belongings
unattended, especially in public places.
