NEWSLETTER DATE JUNE 2016 2016 Alexander J. Walt Lectureship Inside this issue: Alexander J. Walt 1-3 Lectureship and Reception Detroit Surgical 4-5 Association/Academy of Surgery of Detroit Meeting Michigan Chapter/ 6 American College of Surgeons Annual Meeting WSSS Alumni & 7 Friends WSSS Dues Notice 8 WSU Conference Series 9 WSSS 10-11 Sunday, June 19th Following a long and illustrious career as chairman of the WSU Department of Surgery in 1988, Dr. Walt continued to be active in the practice of surgery and his many national commitments including serving as President of the American College of Surgeons in 1994. During these years, his colleagues (former students) on the faculty established a lectureship in honor of Dr. Walt. This lectureship has Dr. Alexander J. Walt traditionally focused on the newer aspects of surgical resident education, particularly since Dr. Walt was so highly respected as a teacher of the medical students and surgical residents. Dr. David Edelman (WSU/GS 2002/09), who is responsible for choosing the Walt Lecturers, introduced Dr. Schenarts prior to his lecture. Dr. Paul Schenarts is the current Medical Director for the University of Nebraska (UofN) Emergency Medical Services and also the Omaha Fire Department. He is Chief of Trauma, Surgical Critical Care, and Emergency General Surgery at U of N. Dr. Schenarts did his medical school training and his subsequent surgical residency at the University Dr. Paul Schenarts of Connecticut. He was then an NIH Trauma Research Fellow at UT Galveston and a Trauma/Critical Care Fellow at Vanderbilt University in Nashville. He has devoted much of his professional career to the challenge of surgical education and has been a prolific writer in this very challenging arena. He has been a longstanding member of the Board of Directors of the Association for Surgical Education and currently chairs the Graduate Medical Education Committee. He has been a leader with the American College of Surgeons education courses for both medical students and residents. Dr. Schenarts has also been very active in our military and has served in Afghanistan and Iraq. Dr. Schenarts provided a most informative and entertaining Walt Lecture entitled “The Good, Bad, and the Ugly: The Impact of Cell Phones on Medical Education.” His discussion on the smart phones identified the advantage of relating to the electronic medical record and having all sorts of information available at one’s fingertips. He then highlighted many of the downsides of the surgical residents’ use of smart Continue page 2 Page 2 May 2016 2016 Alexander J. Walt Lectureship, cont... phones. He pointed out that the smart phones have greater capability to rapidly solve mathematical problems than does the human brain but pointed out that the smart phone does not have the ability to do critical thinking. Consequently, over-reliance on the smart phone impairs critical decision-making in complicated situations. He defined the HIPAA violations as photos and text about patients are being transferred to others without patient permission. Dr. Schenarts was Dr. Dick Dean (WSUGS 1965) most informative as he demonstrated how the users of smart phones are more likely to miss imand his wife, Nancy portant data during lectures and during patient presentations. Furthermore, he pointed out that those individuals who are sitting next to smart phone users also miss important information during lectures and teaching sessions. He proposed that the use of smart phones during lectures be restricted to emergency patient activities, so that the user and the individual sitting next to the user does not have impaired retention due to the distraction of smart phones. Following his lecture, there was a lively and entertaining question and answer session. Incidentally, Dr. Schenarts is a relative of Dr. Richard Dean, who completed the WSU General Surgery Residency Program in 1965. Dr. Dean later received just about all of the honors and awards that can be provided by the Michigan State College of Human Medicine for his many contributions in education. In addition, he was involved in many of the national education activities related to the American Board of Surgery and the American College of Surgeons. Clearly, Dr. Schenarts has good lineage being a younger relative of Dick Dean. Dr. David Edelman presents Dr. Paul Schenarts with a tile of Detroit’s historic Pewabic Pottery and a copy of the “History of the WSU Department of Surgery” by Dr. Larry Stephenson. Dr. David Edelman (WSU/GS 2002/09) introduces Dr. Paul Schenarts, the 2016 Alexander J. Walt Lecturer Dr. Paul Schenarts shares his informative and entertaining lecture, “The Good, Bad, and the Ugly: The Impact of Cell Phones on Medical Education.” Page 3 May 2016 2016 Alexander J. Walt Lectureship Reception On Tuesday evening prior to the Walt Lectureship, Dr. Donald Weaver (WSUGS 1979) hosted a reception for Dr. Paul Schenarts and a select group of colleagues. A good time was had by all. One of the guests at this reception was Mr. John Walt, a very busy attorney in Southeast Michigan, and his son, Aaron, who is finishing his first year in the premedical program at the University of Michigan. We look forward to Aaron becoming a great surgical teacher like his grandfather. Formed in 1920. The Academy got together the leading surgeons of Detroit each month during the academic year to attend a lecture provided by a distinguished visiting professor. The Academy would also have travelling education as members of the Academy would be hosted by famous departments of surgery in the country. As the era of modern communication expanded, the need for these educational trips to other departments decreased and were no longer well attended. This led to a period of time when a talented faculty member from the University of Michigan would make the annual trip to the Detroit Athletic Club and provide an educational experience “on campus.” Over the years, the Academy has continued to bring in a distinguished visiting professor each year and, for the past 36 years, the Academy has joined with the Detroit Surgical Association for a combined year-end meeting. The Detroit Surgical Association (DSA) was formed in 1947 with Dr. Charlie G. Johnston, the WSU Professor of Surgery, providing the initiative to form a young society where surgical residents and young faculty members in the WSU Department of Surgery could present their scientific work. The DSA became more popular during the 1960s through 1980s and would host over 100 members and their residents for the annual meeting. During these annual meetings, the residents would present scientific papers in competition, so that the resident who presented the paper judged to be the best would receive the Theodore Andrew McGraw Medal; Dr. McGraw was the first Chairman of the WSU Department of Surgery in 1868. The 27th annual combined meeting of the DSA/ASD took place on Thursday, May 12, at the Century Grille Restaurant within the Gem Theater in Downtown Detroit. Dr. Peter Czako, President of the ASD presided over the business meeting of the Academy and Dr. Felicia Ivascu (WSU 2000), President of the DSA, presided over the annual meeting of the DSA. Dr. Ivascu introduced Dr. Stanley Goldberg as the Annual McGraw Lecturer for this 27th combined meeting. Dr. Goldberg is a long-standing “gopher,” who has spent almost all of his entire professional career at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Goldberg is a very distinguished colon and Dr. Stanley Goldberg rectal surgeon, who has led the Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery at the University of Minnesota for many years and has been recognized nationally by many honors and national offices. After an illustrious career, Dr. Goldberg retired in the early portion of the 21st century but “failed his retirement.” He is now working full-time at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Minneapolis, where he is actively involved in the teaching of students and residents about how to care for patients with colon and rectal problems. Dr. Goldberg gave an outstanding lecture entitled, “Changing Concepts in the Surgical Management of Continued Page 5 Page 5 May 2016 COMBINED MEETING OF THE DETROIT SURGICAL ASSOCIATION AND THE ACADEMY OF SURGERY OF DETROIT, cont... Perforated Sigmoid Diverticulitis.” During his lecture, which was filled with data, he covered the waterfront as it relates to clinical presentation in classification for severity of illness and current recommendations for therapy according to the severity of the diverticulitis. He quoted several prospective randomized controlled trials from Europe, which emphasize that patients without purulent or feculent peritonitis do not need to be rushed to the operating room for resection of the involved sigmoid colon. He also stressed that more than two episodes of minor diverticulitis is really not a reason for elective sigmoid resection. Dr. Goldberg pointed out that the recent data shows that an aggressive approach to perforated sigmoid diverticulitis, which would include resection of the involved colon along with end-colostomy and Hartmann’s procedure, often results in the patient having a permanent colostomy. He also pointed out that reversal of the Hartmann’s procedure is sometimes extraordinarily difficult leading to complications including the inability to actually do the reversal or subsequent problems with wound disruption, large ventral hernias, and enterocutaneous fistulae. Following his outstanding lecture, thee was an active question-and-answer session, which was enjoyed by all. The recipient of the Best Science /award presented at the DSA over the past academic year was Dr. Inna Lobeck (WSUGS 2017) for the paper entitled “Molecular Basis for a Murine Model of ViralInduced Fibrosis.” Dr. Michael Klein is the senior author on this paper. Dr. Ina Lobeck (Left to right) Dr. Peter Czako, President of the Academy of Surgery, Dr. Darla Granger, the Secretary-Treasurer of the Academy of Surgery, and Dr. Michael White (WSU/GS 1990/97) enjoy the evening festivities. Dr. Stanley Goldberg and Dr. Robert Allaben (WSU 1956) Dr. Felicia Ivascu (WSU 2000), President of the DSA and Dr. Stanley Goldberg Dr. Stanley Goldberg, Dr. Scott Gruber, and Dr. Allen Silbergleit (WSUGS 1960) Page 6 May 2016 Each spring, the Michigan Chapter of the American College of Surgeons (MC/ACS) has their annual meeting. This year the meeting took place on Mackinac Island from May 18-20. As usual, WSU was well represented at the Chapter activities. The current president of the MC/ACS is Dr. Wayne VanderKolk (WSU 1991). Dr. James Tyburski (WSUGS 1992) is one of the Governors of the ACS representing the State of Michigan. Alternate Governors include Dr. Kellie McFarlin (WSU/GS 2003/08) and Dr. Donn Schroder (WSU 1983). The program committee includes Dr. Felicia Ivascu (WSU 2000) and Dr. Allen Silbergleit (WSUGS 1960). Dr. David Edelman (WSU/GS 2002/09) is a Delegate to the MC/ ACS Michigan State Medical Society. A number of papers were presented during the resident competition program. Dr. Mark Diebel (WSUGS 2017) presented, “Gender Dimorphism in Adipose Tissue Response to Stress Conditions: A Plausible Mechanism to Explain the Conflicting Data Regarding Trauma and Obesity.” Dr. Mark Diebel Dr. Jeremy Ciullo (WSUGS 2016) presented “Post-Traumatic Infections: The Effect of Major Abdominal Vascular Injury.” Dr. Jeremy Ciullo During the annual meeting, there are guest lecturers who represent the ACS. Dr. Ronald Stewart, the Chairman of the ACS Committee on Trauma presented the 19th Annual “Mo” Hening Trauma Lecture entitled “Perspectives of the Profession.” This excellent lecture delved into the relationship between patients and physicians and emphasized the gratitude and admiration that patients have for their physicians and the responsibilities and commitments that physicians have for their patients. The presentation was straight from the heart and was well appreciated by the audience. Dr. J. David Richardson, the President of the ACS, delivered a review of where the ACS stands on many issues and the progress that is made in order to help the ACS and American surgeons provide the best care for their patients. This very comprehensive talk dealt with the future of surgical care in America and was well received by the audience. Prior to the formal activities of the MC/ACS, the Michigan Trauma Center representatives met to review the current status of organized trauma care within Michigan. WSU was well represented at this meeting by former graduates who are the trauma directors at various programs within Michigan, including Anna M. Ledgerwood (WSUGS 1972), Trauma Medical Director at Detroit Receiving Hospital. As your president, I would like to summarize events of the last year, the status of the Society, and this year's calendar of events. The annual meeting of the WSSS is always on the Tuesday night of the ACS week. Last year the cocktail reception and dinner, hosted by Chairman Donald Weaver, was attended by 62 members and guests. Remember, the dinner is free for members and the residents attend as guests of the WSSS. I was very proud of the accomplishments and future plans of our chiefs, who automatically are members of the Society, dues-free for two years. The Annual Lectureship of the WSSS is always on the Wednesday before the Detroit Trauma Symposium (DTS). Last year the guest lecturer was Dr. Ronald Maier, Professor of Surgery at the University of Washington. A lively Morbidity and Mortality Conference preceded the Lecture. I attended the DTS for the third straight year and continue to be amazed by what my fellow chief resident, Dr. Larry Diebel, is able to accomplish. There is truly something for everyone, from lectures by world famous surgeons including WSU professors, sunrise hands-on sessions (didn't make those, too much gambling, but I heard rave reviews from attendees), panel discussions, and grilling of chief residents in the Detroit area by Dr. Lucas. The residents are more talented every year! The January-March Michael and Marian Ilitch Department of Surgery newsletter lists 117 members of the WSSS, including 54 Charter Life Members who have or will donate $10,000 to the Society, tax deductible! I am proud to tell you that we have over $200,000 in the bank and are in the process of investing a portion to ensure the Society will exist in perpetuity. Consider becoming a Life Member, invest in the future, some lucky resident may become your partner! This year the WSSS meeting will be on Tuesday, October 18, at the Renaissance in Washington DC. If you haven't been to an ACS meeting recently, this is the time to go; the meeting is always awesome, the WSSS cocktail reception and dinner will be awesome, and it is three weeks before a presidential election in our nation's Capitol! This year the guest lecturer of the WSSS will be Dr. Raul S. Coimbra, MD, PhD, FACS. Dr. Coimbra is Surgeon-in-Chief at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine and Chief of the Division of Trauma, Surgical Critical Care, Burns, and Acute Care Surgery. He will be presenting on, “The Brain-Gut-Lung Axis: Uncovering Multiple Organ Failure after Trauma.” Besides being world famous with over 470 publications, I am told by my partner, who considers him his mentor, that he is a nice guy and a great surgeon. The WSSS dinner will be held Tuesday, November 8th at Giovanni's Ristorantè. Dr. Coimbra will be the honored guest, but the price is steep; he must answer truthfully all questions posed. The WSSS Lecture will be on Wednesday morning, November 9th and your new President, Dr. Brian Shapiro, will introduce Dr. Coimbra. Make plans to attend and stay for the DTS the next two days. Serving as your President the last two years has completed my surgical educational journey. Whatever happens in the future is just gravy. The WSU Department of Surgery and the WSSS is responsible for a large part of my modest success as a surgeon and I intend to support both, to the best of my ability, until the day I die. WSSS was designed to create closer contact between the current faculty and residents with the former resident members in order to create a living family of all of the WSU Department of Surgery. The WSSS also supports department activities. Charter/Life Membership in the WSSS is attained by a donation of $1,000 per year for ten years or $10,000 prior to ten years. Annual membership is attained by a donation of $200 per year. WSSS supports a visiting lecturer each fall and co-sponsors the annual reception of the department at the annual meeting of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Mark A. Herman (WSU/GS/1994/2001) passed the baton of presidency to Dr. Randall W. Smith (WSU/GS 1981/86) at the WSSS Gathering during the American College of Surgeons meeting in October 2014. Members of the WSSS are listed on the next page. Dr. Smith hopes that all former residents will become lifetime members of the WSSS and participate in the annual sponsored lectureship and the annual reunion at the American College of Surgeons meeting.
