LIVING WAGE EMPLOYER
MAY INTAKE OF NEW MEMBERS
The Western Baths Club
became a living wage
employer in November
2015. This means that the
minimum hourly rate of
pay to employees is £8.25
per hour. Formal accreditation
has been received.
As members are aware our membership numbers
continue to be very healthy. At 1st February 2016
we had 2619 members. We have found that due
to the level of applications we receive it is very
difficult to process all the new member details at
the same time as processing renewals. Therefore,
it has been agreed that an additional intake of new
members will take place on 1st May 2016. It will
mean that come 1st November 2016 the number
of admissions will be restricted to ensure that we
do not over populate the membership and allow
us to concentrate our administration on timely
renewals. If you have any friends or family who
have expressed an interest in membership you
may wish to bring this to their attention as any
applications received before 30th April 2016 will
be included within the 1st May intake.
CLUB ACTIVITIES
There are now a number of clubs that have been
set up by members and these include:
•
•
•
•
Walking Group
Cycling Group
Badminton Club
Short Tennis (over 50s)
If you would like to register for any of these groups
please contact reception.
MAY HOLIDAYS
Members please note that the baths will be open
on both the holiday Mondays in May from 11am6.30pm. There will be no recreational classes.
FOR MEMBERS COMFORT!
New chairs and footstools have been purchased for
the Sauna Suite mixed sitting area. The comfy seats
in the Frigidarium are currently being re-cushioned.
Reception One Year On...
Having recently celebrated
it’s first anniversary it is now
hard to imagine the club wit
a reception area. Gone are
hout
the days when members, pro
spective members, tradesm
delivery men were all wander
en and
ing around aimlessly lookin
g for a member of staff to ass
them!
ist
The reception provides a foc
al point for all who come thr
ough the front door, assisti
with general enquiries on a
ng
timely basis and pointing peo
ple in the right direction. Mo
recreational class goers now
st
book and pay at the desk as
do visitors to the club.
Towels and sheets for sauna
suite users are also issued fro
m here.
Emails promoting club events
are sent via the reception and
lost/found property is also
recorded here.
Between them, the three frie
ndly faces of Amy, Layla and
Amy provide a much improv
ed service to all who make
use of the club.

Arrivederci!
JEAN AND DOUGIE ROUGH
Friends, family and many members crammed
into the Deepend on Sunday 27th March to
say ‘ciao’ to Jean and Dougie before they set
off for a new and exciting life in Italy.
Both have been exceptionally active and
regular users over the years since they joined
in 1979.
Jean has also served on the committee for a
number of years where she has had a valuable
input in the improvement of club facilities.
It goes without saying that their presence will
be sorely missed at the club and we wish them
well and good luck in their new adventure.
Fundraising
We would like to thank everyone for their support following our son Stuart’s accident last year. All the generous donations and
fundraising were a huge help with paying for medical bills. Stuart is making good progress and continues to attend rehab and is now
a regular at The Baths. All the donations, kind words and support were very much appreciated.
Glyn and Helen Nixon
At the same time members and staff
had brought in home baking and set up
a stall, similar to the Beatson Bake Off
last year. Sadly by the time the hardy
souls had completed all their classes the
lovely cakes had all been sold.
The final act of the day came when
young Sam Wilson took on the challenge
of setting a new world record for
the number of lengths completed
continuously on the travelling rings. For
anyone not acquainted with the Western Baths, it is one of only 3 swimming pools in the UK with rings suspended from
ropes above the pool. There are 7 rings which cover the length of the pool (27 metres) and you have to swing from the
first to the seventh ring to achieve one length. Sam managed to complete an incredible 79 lengths, which is a record
which may never be beaten.
Sam was very well supported by colleagues and members and if you go to this link: www.thewesternbaths.co.uk/news/
you shall see some footage with many members cheering him on.
Huge thanks to team members James McIntyre, Michael Maher and Lee Ross for coming up with the idea and organising
it from start to finish.
The total sum raised for the Beatson Cancer Charity is now over £2000!
Beatson Cancer Charity
On Saturday the 12th March the
Western Baths Club organised a ClassA- Thon where James and Michael led
participants on 5 hours of continuous
fitness classes. Fuelled only by sweets,
bananas and determination, these hardy
souls battled through Metafit, Boxercise,
Aerobics et al to get to the end.

Congratulations
Jade Lindsay
Congratulations
to
Leisure Attendant Jade
who has been selected
and played for the
Northern Ireland ladies
football team. She has
recently travelled to
Croatia and Italy to
represent the team.
Also, when our own junior football coach Ian McCall
is unavailable, Jade happily stands in as substitute to
ensure the session goes ahead.
Secondary School Age Class
Unfortunately this class hasn’t taken off and has been
removed from the timetable. We are very keen to
offer classes for this age group so it is disappointing
the class didn’t flourish as hoped.
We would however like to make parents and juniors
aware that all the classes, with the exception of Yoga
and Pilates, are suitable for those aged 14 and over.
On Route
On Route is the name given to our gym initiative
designed to assist members in achieving their goals in
the gym and through attending classes.
If you are completely new to the gym and don’t know
how to get started or you are/ have been a gym user
and just need some direction and advice then please
speak to reception as soon as possible who will book
you in for a consultation with one of our qualified
fitness instructors.
Remember if you are a regular gym user you
should be mixing your training up on
a regular basis to ensure you
continue to get the maximum
possible gains, so again you
will also benefit from
talking to one of our
instructors.
Free Golf!
We are delighted to inform you that we have an arrangement
with the prestigious Hilton Park Golf Club to offer you the
chance to enjoy free golf during 2016.
Enjoy access to two James Braid designed courses set in acres
of rolling moorland and surrounded by beautiful countryside.
WHAT MAKES HILTON PARK GOLF CLUB
SUCH A GREAT VENUE?
•
2 courses and 3 starting tees means no waiting on the
tee!
• Excellent catering with open views over the courses to
the Campsie Fells and over the city to the South.
• Covered driving bay and short game practice areas.
• Enthusiastic professional and team offering lesson
packages for cadets, juniors and adults plus competitively
priced golf equipment.
WHAT IS THE DEAL?
We have 80 golf credits to be used between April 2016 and
March 2017. (20 four balls or 40 two balls). Footgolf credits
available on request – HPGC also offer an 18 hole footgolf
course. If you are fed up hitting the ball in the wrong direction
then you can try it with your feet!
HOW DO I MAKE A BOOKING?
HPGC do not offer an online booking system and use the
traditional ‘drop a ball in the shoot’ method. However, with
two courses available you are never likely to wait very long..
Simply contact our reception team with preferred time and
date and we shall check the availability and make the booking
for you via their professional shop. In order to record the
amount of credits used we take a note at this side and HPGC
will record this too.
CAN I PLAY MORE THAN ONCE?
This depends on the take up by members. We anticipate most
of the credits will be used up over the Spring/Summer period.
I DON’T KNOW ANY OTHER MEMBERS BUT WOULD LIKE
TO PLAY IN A FOUR BALL?
One four ball a month will be allocated by a ballot system.
Quite simply a pre-determined tee time will be set and an
e-mail will be sent to members inviting anyone who would like
to take part in that group. All responses will be balloted and a
‘social’ game will be organised. We intend to hold our annual
golf outing at HPGC and this will be a chance for you to meet
other golfers.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST ME?
The credits are free to Western Baths members. All that
we ask is that you complete a feedback form to rate your
experience of the course and service at HPGC.
OTHER FACILITIES AVAILABLE TO BATHS MEMBERS:
Western Tennis and Squash Club
Club members can also benefit from use of the tennis and
squash courts at the Western Tennis and Squash Club up to
two games per week. If you would like to use these facilities
you are required to submit a passport photo to reception and
we can provide a membership card for you to use. Western
have recently added Café Parma so you can enjoy a bite to eat
and a refreshment after your game. Further details available
from reception.
Hyndland Bowling Club
If you have an interest in lawn bowls we can arrange free
access to Hyndland Bowling Club. If you have not played
before we have arranged a fixture with them on Sunday 26th
June and this is a great way for any novice to be introduced to
the game. Register at reception.
