DJ BHB - Bexley City Schools

BHB (Brothers Helpin Bruthas), is the name of an organization created by a man dedicated to
using various artistic expressions, inspired by the Hip hop culture, to deter youth and young
adults from negative actions. Many people who are unfamiliar with the origins of Hip Hop,
which is rooted in self-expression through MCing, DJing, graffiti writing and B-Boyin/B-Girlin,
often view the culture in a negative light. However, those with a passion for the movement,
such as BHB, understand the power and reach of Hip Hop, and has used its influence to create
positive changes in the community. For over 22 years, BHB has used workshops, Hip hop dance
lessons, DJ lessons and an annual Hip Hop Expo, as just a few outlets for people to express
themselves and to foster the talents of youth; and although the name states Brothers Helpin
Bruthas, the organization offers programs to both young men and women. Because of the long
standing of this organization, BHB can attest to the positive changes made by the participants
of its programs. Many students have turned their grades around, gained a new since of esteem,
built camaraderie with other Hip Hop enthusiasts, developed a positive value system and have
become more disciplined. Much of these changes can be attributed to the fact that in order to
stay in the program, it is required that participants stay out of trouble at school and within the
community. Also, many of the people who participated in the program as a youth, return to
teach, volunteer and offer guidance to the young men and women who are currently involved
with the programs.
