Wyndham Express March 1, 2016 Volume 2: Issue 7 From the Administrative Team... March is the month to feel “Lucky.” Luck is often more a way of looking at the glass being half full rather than half empty. With this way of thinking, we can all see that each day brings us treasures more precious than the gold at the end of the rainbow. It can be easy to overlook just how lucky we really are. I look around the school and realize that we are truly lucky to have such a talented teaching staff and wonderful families filling our school. I hope that all of us are able to experience moments of luck and opportunity during the month of March. March is also a time when the weather can be a lion one day, and a lamb the next. With spring right around the corner, we can look forward to a month of many changes, and where a little optimism can go a long way. Inside Insidethis thisissue: issue: With the promise of longer days, more sunlight and warming temperatures, we know that we have weathered the winter and sunnier days are around the corner. STREP – When a sore throat is a more serious infection… Strep throat is caused by a bacterium called Streptococcus pyogenes. The symptoms of strep throat depend on the child’s age. Infants with strep infections may have only a low grade fever and a thickened or bloody nasal discharge. Toddlers (ages one to three) also may have a thickened or bloody nasal discharge with a fever. Such children are usually quite cranky, have no appetite, and often have swollen glands in the neck. Sometimes toddlers will complain of tummy pain instead of a sore throat. Children over three years of age with strep are often more ill; they may have an extremely painful throat, fever over 102 degrees, swollen glands in the neck, and pus on the tonsils. It is important to be able to distinguish a strep throat from a viral sore throat because strep infections are treated with antibiotics. DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT If your child has a sore throat that persists (not one that goes away after his or her first drink in the morning), and may accompany a fever, headache, stomachache, or extreme fatigue, you should call your pediatrician. The doctor will examine your child and may perform a throat culture. Most pediatric offices perform rapid strep tests that provide findings within minutes. If the rapid strep test is negative, your doctor may confirm the result with a culture. A negative test means the infection is presumed to be viral. In that case, antibiotics will not be prescribed. If the test is positive, your pediatrician will prescribe an oral antibiotic or administer an antibiotic by injection. As always, it is very important that your child take the antibiotics for the full course as prescribed. PREVENTION Although most people are contagious before their first symptoms appear, it is important to take simple precautions. Since strep is passed primarily through air droplets or on the hands of infected children or adults, covering coughs and sneezes, as well as, thorough hand washing done often is so important!!! Wiping down contaminated surfaces, (that includes mom and dad’s cell phones and electronic devices!) is also important. And please remember, keeping a child with strep away from others for a full 24 hours AFTER antibiotics have started is our policy. The Get Well Place is available for children recovering from strep so please do not hesitate to reserve a spot. (Information from the American Academy of Pediatrics.) Learn Early. Live Well. Lead. March 1, 2016 Volume 2: Issue 7 Curriculum Highlight - Leadership Day Success! By Tiffany Linick, Preschool Curriculum Specialist We are so excited to report our fourth Leadership Day was a success! After becoming an official Leader in Me Lighthouse School, we were ready to expand our leadership day and focus on our community. On the morning of February 15th Mother Nature decided to throw us a curve ball with snow and ice. That did not stand in our way. Our students really stepped in and shined as leaders to fill in for other students who were out by playing the piano, singing, and greeting. We had to completely rearrange some of the performances, but we did not skip a beat. Considering the weather, we could not have asked for a better outcome. All students, Infant through Club 5 showed off their leadership knowledge and language with a variety of presentations ranging from songs to speeches about what leadership means to them. Every child participated in some way or another, whether it was being a greeter, a tour guide or sharing their leadership skill via a poster or Leadership Notebook. We could not be more proud of our little leaders! Thank you to all of our parents and guests that came out in the snow to experience what Rainbow Station at Wyndham and our leaders have to offer our community. Congratulations to Katie Harrison, our Private Kindergarten Teacher! Learn Early. Live Well. Lead.
