Information for the Instrumental Section
ACCOMPANISTS: There are NO OFFICIAL ACCOMPANISTS for the
INSTRUMENTAL SECTION. Entrants must provide their own, In case of
difficulty it is recommended that the following experienced Festival
accompanists may be available to play with some players in the instrumental
section. It is the responsibility of the performer to contact them and make
their own arrangements over fees, rehearsals and timings, giving a minimum
of 2 weeks’ notice. The Festival organisers cannot help with these
arrangements.

VENUE: Kew Community Centre (St. Luke’s ) is in The Avenue, off Kew Road,
quite near to the Victoria Gate entrance to Kew Gardens. Buses 65 & 391 run
along Kew Road, About 5 mins. walk from Kew Gardens Station. There is a
small car park at the Centre and parking in nearby roads.
A COPY OF THE MUSIC MUST BE PROVIDED FOR THE ADJUDICATOR on the
day of the competitions
The same piece may not be played in different classes (If different
movements of the same work are to be played, please specify on entry form).
TIME LIMITS are given and must be observed. Performances that exceed the
time limit will be adjudicated but not marked or may be stopped by the
organizers or adjudicators if the time limit is grossly exceeded.
Depending on the number of entries it may be necessary to combine or
divide classes.
All awards are made at the adjudicator’s discretion.
Our adjudicator - Robert Max
Robert Max enjoys a career that weaves together the threads of solo
performance, chamber music, conducting and teaching. Robert conducted
the Symphony Orchestra at Royal Holloway, University of London from 20012014 and has also conducted the Covent Garden Chamber Orchestra and the
Marryat Players on many occasions .
As cellist of the Barbican Piano Trio for over a quarter of a century, Robert
has performed on four continents and recorded for ASV, Black Box, Chandos,
Dutton, and Guildmusic. Robert was Musical Director of Pro Corda, the
national school for young chamber music players, from 1998 to 2000 and
now coaches chamber-music at MusicWorks. He is Principal cellist of the
London Chamber Orchestra, a member of the International Board of
Governors of the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance, President of the
North London Music Festival and Artistic Director of the Frinton Festival. He
is also much in demand as an adjudicator and we are delighted to welcome
him to Richmond.
YOUNG INSTRUMENTALIST OF THE YEAR & FESTIVAL AWARD £100 FOR ANY
ORCHESTRAL INSTRUMENTALIST – Strings or Wind 2nd place - £50
Performers must be aged between 14 & 21 years, and must enter 2 classes: A
Recital Class (111 - 112) AND either a Concerto Class (107-109) or Class 120,
121, , 123, 127, OR 128. Special combined entry fee - £10.00 for 2 classes.
Please state ‘YOUNG INSTRUMENTALIST CONSIDERATION’ on entry form.
Awards are made at the discretion of the adjudicator. Previous first placed
winners of this award are not eligible
THE RICHMOND BOROUGH CUP will be awarded at the discretion of the
adjudicator to the outstanding player who is resident in the borough of
Richmond upon Thames or attends school/college or has music lessons
within the borough. This award is presented by Sylvia & Bernard Marder.

ENSEMBLES
Any style of music: classical, jazz, rock etc. Any combination of instruments.
2 or more players. Names of all performers, instruments and style of music to
be stated on the entry form. Performers may enter the same class in
different groups. Classes may be divided by style of music. A Challenge Cup
donated by the late Mrs Julia Pringle will be awarded for the best
performance in classes 102-104.

CONCERTO CLASSES
The names of outstanding concerto performers may be passed to the
Richmond Orchestra who may contact the soloist to offer the opportunity to
do an evening workshop (ca 1-2 hours) in which a piece for solo instrument
and orchestra is worked on with the Orchestra, under the guidance of the
Orchestra's Artistic Director, followed by a run-through. The soloist will gain
some experience and insight into playing with an orchestra.
CONCERTO classes may be divided into Strings and Wind OR FURTHER
DEIVDED BY AGE provided there are sufficient entrants in each discipline.
One Movement only. Performers must provide their own accompanist.

RECITAL CLASSES
All Orchestral Instruments including Harp & Guitar
Time limits should be calculated as ‘total performance time’ including breaks
between items. Credit will be given for choice of programme, which would
usually include 2 or more contrasting pieces, and may include sonata
movements, but not concerto movements. Entrants should choose one
recital class to enter. Classes may be divided into Strings and Wind
provided there are sufficient entrants in each discipline. *See note re
combined fee (£10) for those wishing to be considered for the Young
Instrumentalist of the Year award .
For harp entrants - the Hugo von Sydow Memorial Junior & Senior Challenge

Challenge Cups will be awarded to the most promising violinist and the most
promising 'cellist in classes 117-121. A Challenge Cup presented by the late
Mrs Julia Pringle will be awarded to the most promising beginner (less than 2
years tuition at the time of the Festival in these classes.
