POLICY ON THE ACCELERATION OF UNIVERSITY STUDIES
The University providesseveralmeansby which studentsmay acceleratetheir studies;theseare
discussedbelow. Eachof the following optionsmaybe subjectto restrictionsandregulations
within individual academicprograms.Therefore,studentsinterestedin any of theseoptions
shouldconsultwith the coordinatorof the concernedprogram.
AdvancedPlacement
California StateUniversity ChannelIslandsgrantscredit towardits undergraduate
degreesfor successfulcompletionof advancedplacementexaminations.Studentswho
presentscoresof threeor betterwill be grantedup to six semesterunits of collegecredit
for eachAP course.
Unit Creditbv Examination
California StateUniversity ChannelIslandsmay grantunit credit to thosestudentswho
passexaminationsthat havebeenapprovedfor credit system-wide.Theseare:the CSU
EnglishEquivalencyExamination;the CollegeLevel EntranceProgram(C.L.E.P.)
generalexaminationin Mathematics;the C.L.E.P.SubjectExaminationsin College
Algebraand Trigonometry,in CalculusandAnalytic Geometry,in Statistics,in General
Chemistry,and in German;the CollegeEntranceExaminationBoard (C.E.E.B.)
AdvancedPlacementexaminations;andthe AmericanChemicalSocietyCooperative
Examination.
Studentsmay also challengesomecoursesby taking examinationsdevelopedat the
campus.Credit will be awardedto thosewho passthemsuccessfully.Creditsearnedin
this mannerwill be recordedas"CR" (credit) on the student'stranscriptandwill be
countedtoward the total numberof units requiredfor the degreealthoughthey will not be
includedin calculationof the grade-pointaverage.Credit by examinationmay not be
usedto fulfill the minimum residencerequirement.
Substitutionof Courses
Studentswho believethat a coursethey havetaken(or intendto take) may be appropriate
to their programand that this coursecould substitutefor a specifiedcoursemay request
that a substitutionof coursesbe madeby the programadvisor. Coursesubstitutionsare
normally limited to caseswherethe requiredcoursecannotbe offered or wherethe
studenthastakena similar, but not identical courseelsewhere.

In addition,studentswho believethat previoustraining hassufficiently preparedthemin
a certainareamay requesta waiver of a specificcourserequirement(subjectcredit only).
A waiver of specific courserequirementsdoesnot reducethe total numberof credits
requiredfor the major or the degreenor doesit reducethe residencerequirement.
