DIRECTOR’S NOTEBOOK
Denise M. McPhail
As I reflect on my
childhood in the
summer time, ‘when
the living was easy,’ I
have fond memories of
visiting my
grandmother and
relatives in South
Carolina, walking to the
beach during the day,
night swimming at the
Asbury Park Boys &
Girls Club, and
developing a great love
of literature at the
library where the
objective was to
engage students in
summer reading and
gain supporters in our
parents. I echo this
sentiment today to all
lovers of the Arts.

ART EFFECTS: The Late Erotida “Lillian” Ponce Gaskill
The Sankofa Singers are the first members of the CAPAC Ambassadors Ensemble,
which will ultimately
consist of dancers and
actors too. The name
was inspired by the
Late Erotida “Lillian”
Ponce Gaskill, Founder
of the Woodbridge
Community Choir and
former president of the
PWC Historical Commission. Mrs. Gaskill
was instrumental in
providing content for
CAPAC’s highest re-
quested performance,
“I Am One – Send MeThe Life of Jennie
Dean.” Since she first
introduced the prolific
symbol of the Sankofa
bird to CAPAC, it has
been a dream to create
a choir with this name.
Her love for the arts
attracted her to CAPAC
and her influence left a
great lasting impression.
The naming of the
Sankofa Singers will
forever honor Mrs.
Gaskill’s wisdom and
guidance.

“Sankofa” is an
Akan word meaning
“We must go back and
reclaim our past so we
can move forward.” The
Sankofa bird faces in
the opposite direction
of its body to emphasize that, while advancing, it periodically examines its past since
this is the only way to
have a better future.

CAPAC… ENCOURAGING
UNITY THROUGH THE ARTS
THE POET TREE
YOUTH SPOTLIGHT: JAMIA JORDAN
Clouds that float by on a summer sky
I hop scotch over to you
Rainbows arch from ground to gold
I climb over to you
Thunder grumbles, lightning tumbles
And I bounce over to you

Smiling over at you

CAPAC SPACE
The growth of CAPAC over the past 10 years now demands a dedicated space we can call our own. We are in search of a facility that can
permanently house CAPAC office and theatre space. In the interim, we
are seeking an immediate donated space to serve as our regular rehearsal and audition location. We welcome your suggestions.
