Casa Angelica Connection www.casaangelica.org Newsletter of the Daughters of Charity of Canossa Fall 2015 Greetings to all in St. Magdalene, Since last we shared our newsletter aptly named “Connection” we have had the opportunity to experience our connectioness on many levels. We understand that the passing away of three young residents allowed us to explore our connection to them and I personally attest it lives on, our hearts richer. Each made such an impact on our lives that they live in our thoughts while rejoicing in the Lord. Now we ask their incercession for us. Ask our angels to seek the favor of God on your needs. They were always grateful for our help and will help you now. Stay connected! Inside you will see not only their photos but photos of our three newest residents. I invite you to pray for the well being of our new friends. Learn their names, their needs and like all children their likes and dislikes. Get connected to these beautiful children. I promise you will fall in love. Inside This Issue: Letter from Sr. Kay 1 Highlights 2 The Pope’s Visit 3 “In Memory” 4 Benefit Dinner 2015 5 Donations Wish List/Updated Website 6-7 And finally I ask you to help us by supporting our work, allowing Casa Angelica to be connected to the world. You, our friends who receive this Newsletter, are our first point of reference, particularly when you act as our connection by praying for us, telling our story and writing a check. Why not invite those to whom you tell our story, sharing our need, to write a check as well. I have no hesitation in asking for your help given the connection of hearts. Thank you. 8 Please be assured of our ongoing prayers and know we rely on yours. Casa Angelica 5629 Isleta Blvd SW Albuquerque, NM 87105 (505)877-5763 Sister Ellen K. Taylor, FdCC Executive Director Page 2 Casa Angelica Connection HIGHLIGHTS Casa Angelica is a home to 16 children and young adults. Our Mission Statement is: Challenged by the vision of St. Magdalene of Canossa to serve those “most in need” and believing in the value and uniqueness of each person, Casa Angelica is committed to empower, educate and form young people with pervasive needs, accompanying their growth process, calling forth their gifts and enabling them to develop fully their potentials. This mission is carried out in a family atmosphere that is both collaborative and supportive of the residents and their families. This past summer, God called home three of our young people…their mission on earth was complete. Although it is very difficult for their families and everyone at Casa Angelica, we now open our arms and our hearts to three children needing the love and care that Casa has to offer. We admitted Lupita and Nadeen in August. Lupita turned nine years old within a week of coming to live at Casa Angelica. Lupita loves music. She will crawl to the piano, reach up and play a tune. Lupita will clap while Rhod plays the piano and often she will play along with him. Lupita is able to walk with the assistance of a gait trainer; watch out here she comes! Lupita has already bonded with our therapy dog, Garden and I know they will be great friends. Lupita is adapting well to her new home and has stolen the hearts of all our staff. Nadeen is a sweet eight year-old little girl with great big beautiful eyes! Nadeen loves to sing “chant” and enjoys making funny sounds. She loves anything with lights or is shiny along with the colors of red, yellow and orange. Nadeen can sit up all by herself and turn the pages of a book as staff is reading a story. Nadeen is the youngest in the Road Runner family and is pulling the heart strings of all our staff. Jesse came to live at Casa this October so we are very busy learning all about him. He is a 13 year old boy, soon to be 14 in November. Jesse enjoys going for walks, is able to sit up and will sign for “more.” We are excited to learn all about Jesse as he learns about us. THANKS! Louise Turner, RN Administrator SAVE THE DATE BREAKFAST WITH SANTA Sponsored by the Casa Angelica Auxiliary When: December 5, 2015 Enjoy a morning with Santa Claus, Lobo Louie, Orbit and Elsa Call 294-5622 for more information and tickets Special Thanks to the Casa Angelica Auxiliary for their amazing support of our children and young adults. The Auxiliary raised $85,000.00 this past year! The money will be used to update the building electrical panels to include a new transformer. The dedication and hard work of this group of ladies is amazing! The Casa Angelica Foundation approved a grant for Casa Angelica this summer. The $25,000.00 will go towards new sensory light room equipment, new sliding glass doors in the pool area and new windows for the office and conference room. Thanks so much for your help. Casa Angelica was the recipient of a grant from the Catholic Foundation for $6,500.00. The money will be used for the sensory/light room for the Casa Angelica Day Program “Art From the Heart.” Thanks to all our supporters. Newsletter of the Daughters of Charity of Canossa Page 3 “ALL LIFE IS MEETING” Pope Francis’ visit to our country in September for a few very intense and relevant days left thousands of people feeling not only happy that he came to “get to know” us, but also hopeful and blessed. Thanks to CNN and EWIN, many were able to be virtually present for the various public events and watched the Pope move from speeches to the joint session of Congress to a shelter for the homeless, from a visit to children in an inner city to meeting thousands of families gathered in Philadelphia for the International Meeting of Families, towards the close of his visit. All are memorable moments. One of those moving moments that stood our for me took place at the Mass for the canonization of Junipero Serra in the magnificent Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC. A young woman got up to do the second Scripture reading. Imagine the pressure to be in front of the Pope and the 25,000 people in attendance, and millions more watching on TV from around the world. Her reading was clear and confident. She was poised and precise. She had Down Syndrome. Without evening knowing her, I felt so proud and happy that she had been chosen for such an important role of Lector. Now that’s inclusion! Our young people at Casa Angelica wanted to be a part of the Pope’s visit and so they wrote a letter of welcome to His Holiness. I quote a short excerpt: Dear Holy Father Francis, We send you warm and loving greetings from Albuquerque, New Mexico! We wanted to write to you to say thank you for all you do and all you are for the church. Thank you for loving people, especially those who have some visible disabilities, like us who live at Casa Angelica. We know that everyone has disabilities inside that cannot be seen as much as ours. We are all God’s beloved children and each one of us is special in God’s eyes… This letter, to the head of the Church universal, was accompanied by prayers and a card made especially for Pope Francis. Wednesday, October 7th, two of our Casa residents, Colleen and Patrick, attended Mass at Sacred Heart Church where Archbishop Wester, head of our Archdiocese of Santa Fe, presided. This special gathering was for people living with disabilities and those who care for them. The Archbishop publicly acknowledged the presence of our young people of Casa Angelica and later, at the reception, came over to meet them again and to allow us to take this photo, promising that he would come and visit us. Pope Francis and Archbishop Wester seem to have a singular gift of trying to include everyone. Martin Buber, the famed Jewish philosopher noted, “All life is meeting,” and I believe every encounter has the potential of an encounter with grace and never more so than meeting those who are differently-abled. Sister Liz Chambers Page 4 Casa Angelica Connection Jayne Devante Our Indian Princess Beautiful Smile Jayne Nicole Healy was born to her new life on June 21, 2015. Jayne had a beautiful smile that would melt your heart. She loved to play outside with yellow, red and green cellophane paper. What beautiful colors it made. She had a heart of gold. Jayne was part of the Casa Angelica Day Program “Art From the Heart.” She volunteered at The Indian Pueblo Cultural Center and St. Vincent de Paul. Jayne was loved by all and will be missed. Until we see you again, it’s not good-bye, it’s see you later! Devante graduated from Rio Grande High School in May of 2015 and attended his Senior Prom at Casa Angelica. It was a wonderful event and Devante loved it very much. We are going to miss his kisses and his love but we will meet again in heaven. “Kissy Boy” Brother To Adam Daniel “Devante” Martin was born to his new life on July 10, 2015. Devante loved being dressed up and smelling good. He loved lots of compliments and would give you a big smile when you told him how handsome he was. He loved playing around with staff and thought that was the coolest thing he could do. Brother To Devante Loved The Sun Adam Adam Martin was born to his new life on September 2, 2015. Adam was a member of the Casa Angelica Day Program “Art From The Heart.” Adam was a hard-working young man that loved to get up in the morning and go to work at the Rio Grande Food Project on Tuesdays. He took his work very serious and learned to enjoy the hand-over-hand technique with the staff of Casa. His work ethic was extraordinary and it would be hard to achieve by anyone else. Adam loved his jazz music and for the sun to shine on his face. His charming smile charmed all of us here at Casa, something that we will never forget.
