Issue 5 SPECIAL JUNE 2016 PROJECT LEARNING EDITION Every year we have a special week called Project Learning. It is a week when students learn about different topics. Our Park P1 students looked at the parks near Canossa Primary School. They worked together, in small groups, and designed their own special parks. 1A 1B 1C 1D “I like working and talking with my friends. so beautiful. TOYS By B nd Ken ernard a Toys used 40-60 years ago were made of wood, glass, metal or plastic. They were handmade and were very easy to fix. Children used their hands to control the toys. Nowadays, many toys are electronic and are made of plastic, metal and other materials. They are also powered by batteries and electricity. Electronic toys can be very expensive to fix. Some transport was powered by neither fuel nor electricity but by human power. Today’s transport is powered by fuel and electricity and have air-conditioners (except bikes, scooters, trams and motorbikes). However, they are not as cheap as before. 4 TRANSPORT NOW THEN Tram ✓ ✓ Bus ✓ ✓ MTR ✓ ✗ Light rail ✓ ✗ Taxi ✓ ✓ Ferry ✓ ✓ Bikes ✓ ✓ Scooters ✓ ✓ Motorbikes ✓ ✗ Sampan (fishing villages and for visitors ✓ ✓ Clothes NOW, everyone wears Western clothes. People do not like wearing Chinese clothes because they think they (the Chinese clothes) are old-fashion. THEN, people did wear some Western clothes, but dresses and skirts were not popular because they were very expensive and many people did not have a lot of money. They wore Chinese style clothes. By Bowie and Evan Working by myself or in a group- what is better? In class, we must often work by ourselves. In Project Learning we worked in groups. Kary and Evan discuss “What is better?” Look at Working by Myself and the Group Work table on page 12. Working by Myself ● I can often work faster, but I have to do it all. ● The work can take a long time to finish because there is no one to help. ● I can get stuck and there is no one I can talk with. ● I cannot make new friends. ● I cannot share ideas or find more information. ● I have to be more responsible. ● I will not quarrel with others. Written by Kary 5 Who is fair and just? By Mario, Ella, Jasmine, Annie, Angus and Kary. A fair and just person is someone, who * Tells the truth. * Treats people the way they want to be treated. * Obeys the same rules that everyone must obey. * Thinks of others before they speak or do anything. * Can say “sorry” when they make a mistake and do not blame others. * Is not bossy. * If there is a problem listens to both sides. * Does not give the best things or best jobs to their friends. Every day, we use too much energy, destroy a lot of useful things and waste a lot of and water. We, also, make a lot of pollution such as air pollution, land pollution, water pollution, noise pollution. We need to save our Earth! reuse reduce We need to change our habits. 7Rs can help us! rethink recycle resist replace re-educate The P6 students tell us that: Reuse Use things again, not only one time! What can I do? How can I reuse things? ◆ When I go to the shopping mall or shopping to buy things, the shop may give me plastic bags. The plastic bag can be a trash bag. ◆ Reuse plastic bottles when I do sports. ◆ Also, wash vegetables in a bowl or bucket. After, I have finished washing the vegetables; I can use this water to water the plants or wash the floor. ◆ Donate used clothes, books etc to people/organisations who need them. Reduce Use fewer things that cannot be used again. Use less en- ergy. What can I do? How can I reduce? ◆ Turn off the light if I am not in the room. ◆ Reduce the material I use in an art lesson. ◆ Instead of having a bath, have a shower. ◆ Order less food so that food is not thrown away. ◆ Use plastic bags when I go shopping and reduce the number of plastic bags I get. ◆ Set the air conditioner at 25.5C instead of lower than 20C. 9 Recycle Use the materials of things to make other things that we can use How can I recycle? What can I do? ◆Put used plastic bottles, tins (metal), and paper into the yellow, brown and blue recycle bins. ◆Buy things that are made from recycled paper/ plastic/ metal. Resist Ask is this good for the environment? If the answer is no, then you refuse or reject getting something or doing something. What can I do? ◆ When I go shopping, we should think! If the thing isn’t very important, I should not buy this thing. ◆ Getting new things all the time. ◆ Buying things that are made of materials that cannot be recycled. Replace Change things and the way you do things that are better for the environment. What can I do? ◆ Use own shopping bags instead of plastic bags. ◆ Use light globes that don’t use a lot of energy. ◆ Use my own water bottle. ◆ Use glass/reusable plastic plates and cups. Rethink Think before you buy things or do things! What can I do? ◆ I can ask do I/we really need it, is it necessary? ◆ I think that I/ we can use things more than once. For example the plastic that is used for picnics and bbqs. ◆ Use party plates/bowls/ cups that can be used again. ◆ Buy fruit and vegetables that are not wrapped in plastic. ◆ It is not far so, I can walk instead of using a bus/ MTR/ taxi. ◆ Buy things that are made from recycled paper / plastic/ metal. 10 Re-educate (this is the hardest!) People, especially adults like teachers, parents and others must learn how to change what they do. What can I do? ◆ Share what I have learnt. ◆ Ask if I can turn the air conditioner’s temperature up a little. ◆ Check if the materials can be recycled. ◆ Use cold water in the washing machine. All this takes time; some take longer than others! We can do these right now!! These will take a little time. These will take the most time! RESIST REPLACE RE-EDUCATE REDUCE RECYCLE RETHINK REUSE Let’s follow the 7Rs so that we can save our Earth! By Kristy, Tony, Nicole, Derek, Allison and Andy A special ‘THANK YOU’ to the CPS Student Post editorial team Reporters: Ella (5B) Kary (5B) Angus (5C) Jasmine (5D) Annie (5D) Evan (6B) Kristy (6B) Tony (6B) Leanne (6B) Nicole (6B) Bernard (6C) Allison (6C) Andy (6D) Mario (6D) Derek (6D) Bowie(6D) Annabella (6B) Ken(6C) Editors: Miss Ho and Ms West 11 Group Work Written by Evan Group work is good but then, it can also be not so good! You can share your ideas or use other’s ideas but too many ideas and different ideas can cause arguments. The work is shared but lazy group members do nothing. You can make new friends but sometimes, it’s not easy to talk with new people. Sometimes the group members talk too much and the group cannot complete the work on time. Mmmmm, so what is best, working by myself or working in a group? It all depends on the task that has to be completed. If the work is short it is better to work alone, but if the task has many parts to it, it will be better to work in a group. D WOR CH SEAR 12
