THE NEW MUSIC INITIATIVE
Music speaks louder than words. It's the only thing that the whole world listens to.
But more about that in a minute.
This past December I had a meeting with the TKE Long Term Planning Committee. We discussed, naturally,
the future of the synagogue in the next five years.
I suggested that, rather than put out an anonymous "survey monkey," I would host a "listening tour" in my apartment for four
consecutive Mondays in February.
Four new initiatives came from that series of meetings; all of them return us to the original roots of Temple Kol Emeth!
The Interfaith Families Initiative: Debbie Antonoff establishes a synergy with The JCC preschool interfaith families while
teaching her classic "Stepping Stones,"- outreach to Jewish and interfaith moms. Other interfaith activities are planned. If you are
in an interfaith relationship and want to help, text Rabbi Lebow at (404) 790-8612.
The Young Couples Initiative: Rabbi Lebow's outreach to couples whose weddings (or baby namings) he has performed in the
last 5-6 years. Engaging young Jewish and interfaith couples socially, outside the synagogue walls!
The Tot Shabbat Initiative: Guest artists, like Emily Aronoff Teck, and TKE volunteers—Silvia Tenenbaum, George and Alana
Bass, Dr. Mitzi Schepps, and Lisa Mallis bring Tot Shabbat back (at least) twice a month!
And finally....
The TKE New Music Initiative: Blake and Ira, Burt and the choir are still with us...but beginning in August, get ready for new
artists and musicians, as well:
August 4 The Atlanta Drum Café, teaching us sacred teamwork,
through percussion.
August 11 Alex Guthrie, Atlanta's up and coming singer songwriter
for a pre-oneg concert!
August 18 Kyra Goldman, a girl who fell in love with Israel and
discovered her Jewish roots
August 25
Atlanta Jewish Music Festival presents the Rabbi Glusman Band!
Coming later in the year: Shir Harmony Women's A Capella Choir, “The Theology of Blake Singer's Music,” Yiddish music and
lecture by Ira Wajsman, new music from Burt Kann and the Choir, a pre-oneg concert with singer-songwriter Brett Benowitz,
Beatles Music Shabbat with guest artist Jonathan Warner, Disco Simchat Torah— and best of all....the return of Jewish gospel and
blue grass with Nefesh Mountain at Rosh Hashanah!
See you every Friday in August for "The New Music Initiative"!

Summer has arrived—and we have some new and exciting things happening at

We have been given an anonymous donation to fund a new staff position. This

Our office staff will be upgrading the computer platform used to maintain

Avodah was a great success this year! I’d like to thank Sandi Davis, Michelle
Dobo, Sue Moye, and the outstanding Avodah Committee for putting on a fun
event. They exceeded the fundraising goal; and it was an amazing night. Thank
you all!
At our recent Annual Board Meeting, a new slate was approved. We have several
people retiring from the board whom I’d like to thank: Paula Wilson, Sara
Vigdorov, Vivian Brostoff, Susan Moye, Jodi Roberts, Lindsay Lanson and Ron

YOUTH PROGRAMMING
Our Mission: To provide a fun, safe, engaging Jewish youth community through experiential programs that will create a strong
Jewish identity that will guide our youth throughout their lives.
Facebook: templekolemethyouth & kefty
Twitter: @TKEYouth & @KEFTY_tyg
Instagram: @tkeyouth & @kefty_kangaroo
Youtube: youtube.com/user/KEFTY1415
What’s Next?
The 2017-2018 KEFTY board and I got together last month to revisit our goals as a youth group and to plan how to put those
goals into action. With that in mind, I want to share with you our vision for youth programming in the coming year.
·
KEFTY wants to continue to grow our recycling program by transforming more of our old, tired soda dispensers into
beautiful recycling bins while also increasing awareness of how to green our communities and our lives.
·
We will be kicking off a cooking internship for those teens (or parents) who are excited about the possibilities of food being
used for creating and building community, careers and cries of “Oh. My. God. That tastes amazing!!”
·
Our KEFTY teens will be doubling down on engaging our middle school youth through Kol Noar, our big/little program, and
NFTY678.
·
KEFTY will continue to experiment with our Teen Lounges, creating opportunities to: explore Atlanta, play in nature,
volunteer in our community, and stimulate meaningful conversations about the topics that interest teens the most!
·
Kol Yeladim will be coordinating the first annual Atlanta-wide Jewish World Quidditch Championship, building on our
incredible success from last year. Although we didn’t come away with the first place trophy, we were definitely winners when
it came to fun!
·
We will have easier registration for religious school families. Youth group registration can now be done in conjunction with
religious school registration, saving you the trouble of filling out duplicate paperwork!
·
We’re working to save our parents time. We are working hard to calendarize our events to save you from driving back and
forth from TKE.
·
We’ll simplify the abitlity to know what is going on. Last year we started using Remind101 a tool for informing families
about upcoming programs and last-minute details and information. We will be expanding the use of the Remind101 system to
help keep you connected effortlessly.
·
We want to get to know you. Of all the great things coming up, I think I might be most excited for 100 in 100 is our audacious
goal to have 100 one-on-one and small-group discussions with our families with kids within the next 100 days. Can’t wait to
get to know you better!
We also have more than a couple of surprises in store for all of you, including a few pop-up programs this summer. Keep your
eyes peeled and your ears to the tracks.
Questions??? Contact Ezra Flom, Youth & Family Program Director, [email protected] or (770) 973-3533.

The four families from Family Promise of Cobb County will be staying with us in the DLC before you know it! They will
be with us from Sunday, December 3, through Sunday, December 10. Mark your calendars now and think about how you can
participate in helping these families feel comfortable during their stay at TKE. We will need lots of “hands on deck” in
various capacities. Volunteer opportunities will include: making dinner for the families, donating food for breakfast and
lunch, and setting up their sleeping quarters. Closer to the High Holy Days, you will see instructions on how you can signup
for the task of your choice.
In the meantime, look for bins at TKE for donation items. One bin will be for sheets, pillowcases, blankets and towels. The
other bin will be for non-perishable food items, such as bottled water, individual bottled juices, snack drinks, Pop-Tarts, little
cereal boxes, protein/power/breakfast bars and little bags of chips, etc. for sack lunches. We will be feeding 14 people for
seven days.
Thank you so much for participating and helping these families in their time of need!
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact either of us.

Road Rally Results
The 20th Annual Road Rally was held on April 23.
Participants followed an animal-themed course designed by last
year’s winners, Janet Melnik and Linda and Greg Ames.
Teams drove through the streets of Marietta to answer clues for the
Big Chicken, Red Fox Trail, Horsetown, and more.
Clues led to the golden lions outside of the
China Dynasty restaurant, where everyone enjoyed dinner as the
answer sheets were tabulated.
This year’s winners are Howard and Ellen Cooper, who will have
their names added to the Road Rally Trophy
displayed in the Social Hall and also won the opportunity to plan the
Road Rally for next year.
Look for announcements in early 2018, and plan to join the fun so maybe your name can be added to the trophy!

Children’s Memorial Garden
We are delighted to report that the engraved bricks gracing the floor of the Children’s Memorial Garden’s Janet and Tony
Mills Family Amphitheater were installed in the middle of April and a dedication service was held on Sunday, April 23,
as part of Temple Kol Emeth’s Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) commemoration.
If you have not visited the Children’s Memorial Garden recently, we hope you will soon.
We have many bricks still to inscribe, in both the standard (4” x 8”) and medallion (8” x 8”) sizes. Order your bricks at
http://www.kolemeth.net/Images/userfiles/brick.pdf. You can purchase one in honor of Dad for Father’s Day, for a
bar or bat mitzvah, to recognize a loved one’s yahrzeit, to celebrate a birthday or anniversary, or for any occasion.
Give someone special a gift that will last a lifetime…and beyond.

Joshua Bercu will become a bar mitzvah on June 3. Joshua is a seventh grader at Hightower Trail Middle School. He is
the son of Doug and Lan Bercu and has a brother, Levi. Joshua plays clarinet in the Hightower Trail seventh grade band.
He enjoys playing hockey, making YouTube videos, spending time with friends and spending his summer vacation at
Camp Thunderbird. His parents could not be prouder of him for reaching his bar mitzvah and for all of the love he has
brought into their lives.

Our first gathering was held on May 10. At this meeting, the stage was set for the awesomeness of the task that lies ahead, the
time and devotion that will be required of committee members, and the eagerness to involve the ENTIRE congregation as we
search for our new clergy. There are many phases to the hiring process; and it is not a quick one. Although this in not set in
stone, our current goal is to have our clergy hired by July 2018. Our other goal is to keep the congregation informed of our
progress via The Voice and e-blasts, as well as to create a means for listening to YOUR voices as we work our way through
the process together.
May we all go from strength to strength!
