Unveiling of “Manifest Diversity” Celebrates Mural of America’s Diverse History. On
Sept. 9, the campus community and guests gathered near the Loker Student Union at CSU
Dominguez Hills for the unveiling of “Manifest Diversity,” a mural that was created by students,
faculty, staff and alumni under the guidance of muralist Eliseo Art Silva. The large-scale work
depicting a multiethnic view of American history is now on view in the Multicultural Center
(MCC). “Manifest Diversity” was inspired largely by the writings of historian/social activist
Howard Zinn and features close to 100 images of individuals and iconic scenes in American
history, from Pre-Columbian Native Americans to present-day struggles for social justice in
issues such as health care reform and immigrant rights.
L-R: Lui Amador, Multicultural Center coordinator;
Karen Bass, California State Assembly speaker
emeritus; muralist Eliseo Art Silva; and CSU
Dominguez Hills President Mildred García helped
unveil the “Manifest Diversity” mural in celebration
of the university’s 50th anniversary.
University President Mildred García and Lui Amador, MCC coordinator, welcomed guests to
the mural’s unveiling, including Speaker Emeritus of the California State Assembly Karen Bass
(Class of ’90, B.S., health sciences), whose image is depicted in the mural. Johnny Itliong, son
of late United Farm Workers of America labor leader Larry Itliong, also attended the event to
celebrate the commemoration of his father’s accomplishments in the mural.
-----------------------------------Recent Grants to CSU Dominguez Hills Focus on Meeting L.A.’s K-12 Educational
Needs. In the past few months, the School of Education at CSU Dominguez Hills has been
awarded three prestigious grants totaling more than $13 million that will allow the university to
have a greater impact in meeting the educational needs of the Los Angeles region.
The U.S. Department of Education’s School Leadership program awarded a five-year, multimillion dollar grant to the university for the creation of the Charter and Autonomous Public
School Leadership Academy (CASLA) in partnership with Los Angeles Unified School District.
A major goal of the program is to develop effective, knowledgeable, and transformative
school leaders who will improve the teaching and learning in the more than 230 charter and
autonomous schools within the LAUSD service area. Based on outcomes at the end of each
grant year, the grant would be renewed up to five years for a total grant amount of $9.2 million.
The National Science Foundation awarded CSU Dominguez Hills a $970,224 grant, the first
year of a six-year grant cycle, to recruit, train, and support master science teachers in biology
and chemistry in 18 south Los Angeles-area public schools. Based on annual outcomes, the
grant would be renewed up to six years for a total grant amount of $2.99 million.
CSU Dominguez Hills was one of six CSU campuses included in a $3 million Career Pathways
Partnerships grant awarded in June as part of the governor’s California Gang Reduction,
Intervention and Prevention (CalGRIP) initiative. The universities are partnering with local
community colleges and community-based organizations—the direct recipients of the grants—
to provide a pathway for at-risk youth to attain a college degree and become teachers.
-----------------------------------City of Compton and CSU Dominguez Hills Partner for “Town and Gown” Reception.
CSU Dominguez Hills President Mildred García and university administrators hosted Assemblyman Isadore Hall, city legislators, and local business and education leaders from Compton at a
“Town and Gown” reception held on September 9 in the Loker Student Union. President García
shared the latest developments at the university and discussed how the university can partner
with Compton to further workforce development that is critical to the region’s economic success.
