KEEP YOUR FAMILY AND PETS SAFE FROM COYOTES More than likely, somebody in your family has seen a coyote on a street, in a park or even in a Mississauga school yard; they are part of our urban landscape. Although coyotes are not usually aggressive toward people and typically avoid human contact, they will wander into neighbourhoods searching for food. Learn about the precautions you can take to avoid conflict with coyotes. Keep your family and pets safe by taking these simple steps. Animal Proof Your Property Keep Your Family Safe • Keep garbage/compost in a garage or shed and ensure lids are secure • Never leave young children unattended outside • Remove food sources such as bird feeders, seed spillage and fallen tree fruit • Teach children to never approach wildlife • Feed pets indoors • Do not feed coyotes or other wildlife • Enclose spaces under decks and sheds to discourage wildlife from nesting • When walking in areas where coyotes are active, bring protection such as a cell phone, personal alarm, umbrella, walking stick or flashlight Keep Your Pets Safe Meeting a Coyote Face-To-Face • Stay calm and wait until they move away • Never turn your back or run from a coyote, their natural instinct is to chase • If a coyote approaches, make yourself as large as possible, clap and shout loudly, or make startling movements • Carry a walking stick or startle the animal by opening an umbrella, using a flashlight or activating an audible alarm. • Keep cats indoors • Keep dogs on a short five foot (1.5 m) leash and don’t use an extendable leash • Maintain control of your dog and don’t allow them to chase coyotes • Check your yard for wildlife before letting your pet outside • Do not house rabbits, fowl or pets outdoors as their food and odour attract coyotes • Vaccinate your pet regularly against rabies If a coyote is aggressive, sick or injured, or if you want to report an incident of feeding coyotes contact Mississauga Animal Services.
