KEEP YOUR FAMILY AND PETS
SAFE FROM COYOTES
More than likely, somebody in your family has seen a coyote on a street,
in a park or even in a Mississauga school yard; they are part of our
urban landscape.
Although coyotes are not usually aggressive toward people and
typically avoid human contact, they will wander into neighbourhoods
searching for food.
Learn about the precautions you can take to avoid conflict with coyotes.
Keep your family and pets safe
by taking these simple steps.
Animal Proof Your Property
Keep Your Family Safe
• Keep garbage/compost in a garage or
shed and ensure lids are secure
• Never leave young children
unattended outside
• Remove food sources such as bird feeders,
seed spillage and fallen tree fruit
• Teach children to never approach wildlife
• Feed pets indoors
• Do not feed coyotes or other wildlife
• Enclose spaces under decks and sheds
to discourage wildlife from nesting
• When walking in areas where coyotes
are active, bring protection such as a
cell phone, personal alarm, umbrella,
walking stick or flashlight
Keep Your Pets Safe
Meeting a Coyote Face-To-Face
• Stay calm and wait until they move away
• Never turn your back or run from a coyote,
their natural instinct is to chase
• If a coyote approaches, make yourself as
large as possible, clap and shout loudly,
or make startling movements
• Carry a walking stick or startle the animal
by opening an umbrella, using a flashlight
or activating an audible alarm.
• Keep cats indoors
• Keep dogs on a short five foot (1.5 m) leash
and don’t use an extendable leash
• Maintain control of your dog and don’t
allow them to chase coyotes
• Check your yard for wildlife before letting
your pet outside
• Do not house rabbits, fowl or pets outdoors
as their food and odour attract coyotes
• Vaccinate your pet regularly against rabies
