Fight Against HIV
Providing Access to HIV Prevention for Thousands
For nearly 30 years, CRI has worked tirelessly towards an end to the HIV
epidemic. The clinical HIV research that you support continues to help
test and discover new treatments that improve the lives of people living
with HIV across the world. Our partnership with the Massachusetts
Department of Public Health (DPH) to manage the HIV Drug Assistance
Program (HDAP) helps thousands of HIV-positive individuals living in
Massachusetts access the life-saving medications that they need every
year. The BRIDGE team’s outreach and education initiatives ensure that
providers, case managers, and consumers have the most up-to-date
health insurance and benefits information necessary to provide access
to the best HIV care and treatment to clients across the state.
Our staff is prepared to help those who
need PrEP

Research that Saves Lives
CRI is now proud to partner with the Massachusetts DPH on a new
HIV-prevention initiative, the Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Drug Assistance
Program (PrEP DAP). This pilot program, recently spotlighted in The
Boston Globe, will help HIV negative individuals living in Massachusetts
who need assistance paying for PrEP medication. PrEP DAP will cover
any required prescription copays and deductibles for PrEP medication
for eligible Massachusetts residents.
PrEP is a successful HIV prevention method that can help reduce the
risk of contracting the disease for HIV-negative individuals. The CDC
reports that when taken correctly, PrEP reduces the risk of HIV infection
in people who are at a high risk by up to 92%. Truvada, an HIV
antiretroviral medication produced by Gilead, is currently the only FDAapproved PrEP treatment. People currently looking for PrEP assistance
are directed to Gilead’s Patient Assistance Program.
At a September 30 meeting, the Department of Public Health’s Office
of HIV/AIDS rolled out the pilot PrEP program to staff from twelve
participating agencies. Based on results from these pilot sites, Office of
HIV/AIDS officials hope to expand PrEP DAP to additional health care
sites throughout Massachusetts.
CRI is excited and well-positioned to take on this new role as
Massachusetts further integrates HIV prevention and care. We are
dedicated to ensuring that all who need access to medication are able
to obtain it, and this program allows us to help the Department of
Public Health focus on HIV prevention measures. Access to preventative
medication will help decrease the number of new HIV infections and
bring us one step closer to ending the HIV epidemic.

First-in-Nation Law Ensures Insurance Coverage for Treatment of Lipodystrophy
Thank You for Standing Up and Making a Difference!
On August 10, Governor Charlie Baker signed a law making Massachusetts the first state in the country to require
insurance companies to cover treatment for HIV-related lipodystrophy. This law will ensure some of the longestterm survivors of the HIV epidemic will finally have access to effective treatment and the critical health care they
need and deserve.
CRI’s BRIDGE Team Project Manager George Hastie serves as
Co-Chair of the Treat Lipodystrophy Coalition (TLC), and CRI
is proud to have worked alongside the legislators, physicians,
community leaders, organizations, and supporters who
have worked diligently over the past several years to
make coverage a reality. The passing of this monumental
legislation would not be possible without your help – thank
you for standing up, speaking out, and making sure people
living with HIV are able to receive the treatment they need!
John Michael Gray: In Memoriam
We are sad to say goodbye to John Michael Gray, one half of the beloved Hat
Sisters and an advocate for the LGBTQ community for 30 years. Like so many, we
were lucky to have known John, experience his generosity, and to have called him
a friend. Our deepest condolences go out to his family, friends, and loved ones.

Sharing Knowledge to Fight HIV
Dr. Hannah Olivet’s Top Takeaways from
the International AIDS Conference
Hannah Bouldin Olivet, MD, CRI’s Associate Research Director and Principal
Investigator of HIV Studies, attended this year’s 21st International AIDS
Conference in Durban, South Africa. Over 18,000 health care providers, scientists,
policy-makers, and advocates from around the world gathered at the conference
to share science and knowledge to help build an evidence-based response in
addressing HIV/AIDS throughout the world.
We asked Dr. Olivet about her experiences in Durban, and she’s provided us with
her top three takeaways from the conference:
The diversity of representation at this conference provides a profound realization
for all involved that HIV has a very different face, depending on where in the
world one finds oneself. Despite these differences, there were core themes that
we must focus on, whether we are in the US or another part of the world.
1
Access. In order to find an end to HIV/AIDS, we must focus on providing equal
access and treatment to everyone—men, women, youth, the LGBTQ community,
those who find themselves threatened by stigma, and those struggling with
their rights to live as healthy and accepted members of the global community
2
More effective prevention and treatment methods. Global research
and important clinical trials make single-tablet regimens, long-acting injectable
therapy, and an HIV vaccine possible. The search for treatment and prevention
options (PrEP) for those at risk will only continue with increased advocacy and
strengthened support.
3
Youth. Since today’s youth serve as the face of this epidemic and as the
future in providing the end of HIV/AIDS, they are demanding to be heard, and
their voices are profound, encouraging, and helpful. We must find new ways to
reach youth and promote awareness, testing, treatment, and PrEP!
