St. Michael and All Angels
Parish Prayer
We humbly ask God bless this
profile as a true representation
of our parish. We thank God for
the talents of all those at our
Parish whose efforts have built
our church. Open our eyes to see
the path ahead with clarity and
insightfulness and to follow you in
all things. Open our ears to hear
your voice and to listen to one
another. Open our hearts to the
truth of your will for this
congregation. Help us to put aside
all selfish desires and grant us
energy for the journey, patience
with the process, and courage in
decision making. Send your Holy
Spirit into our midst to bless and
strengthen us. In the name of
your Son, our Lord and Savior,
Jesus Christ, we pray.
Amen.

PREFACE
The Parish Executive Committee has developed this Profile of the St. Michael and all angels, Mtwara. The purpose is to
describe the Church of the St. Michael and all angels, its history, congregation, ministries, statistics and finances. It is
intended to serve as an honest insight into who we are as a community.
To gather the information for this Profile, a number of measures were utilized. The data sources included a review of
Parish records, interviews with individuals and church ministries, as well as the completion of a Congregational
Consideration.
The main body of this profile represents the Worshippers completing the review, because the voices of them are
important to us.
The Executive Committee would like to thank all council members of the St. Michael and all angels Mtwara who
contributed to the content and completion of this document, including participating in interviews and completing the
review.

Profile of the parish of the St. Michael and all angels
INTRODUCTION
This is our parish story. It tells a story of who we are, what we believe, what our vision and mission is, and why it is so
important to us. It tells a story of worship, outreach, education, fellowship, human talent and commitment. It tells a story
of wish, expectation and confidence for the future.
St. Michael and all angels celebrate its Christian faith through the loveliness of its liturgy, its music and the sharing of all
God’s gifts. We share in the sacraments and seek to carry God’s love. We believe God calls the heart of each individual he
chooses to become part of St. Michael’s family. Our Parish value all persons regardless of age, gender, tribe, social or
economic status and physical ability. We welcome all regardless of where they may be on their spiritual journey.
In St. Michael’s family, there are no outsiders. All are insiders. God's dream wants us to be brothers and sisters, wants
us to be family... Go and tell our brothers and sisters. Go and tell our family. We are all God's family.
St. Michael and all angels is much like a family. People are attracted to St. Michael and all angels because they feel
welcome, spiritually raised, and supported by a loving community. People stay at St. Michael and all angels because they
have a voice – a voice that develops by getting involved in our many groups and activities. Because we are united
through outreach and we share the unity together, the support and sharing is not limited to any one group of church
members. Feeling welcome applies to young and old, rich and poor, male and female, and to diverse tribal and groups.
There are many opportunities to get involved, and the spirit of collaboration amongst congregants is alive and well.
Because our parish is solid, maintains a good balance between previous and new ideas, and is well-run and organized,
congregants feel secure and involved, and believe that their church family adds strength to their everyday lives.

HISTORY
On August 2008, Saint Michael and All Angels Church celebrated its fiftieth anniversary as a congregation in the Diocese
of Masasi. Saint Michael and All Angels began when families charted the course for a new parish with their first service
as a mission congregation. The need for a new congregation was a result of the rapid growth of Christianity in Mtwara
Town. The congregation initially met at Mikindani (the old town). Saint Michael and All Angels was incorporated on
February 1958. A few months later, the congregation moved to its first home.

WHO WE ARE
St. Michael and all angels Anglican Church is located in eastern part of Mtwara – Mikindani Municipality has
both urban and suburban characteristics. It is an extremely various community both culturally and socioeconomically. Some areas of the town are occupied by farms and open land, while others have inner city
characteristics, including a visible homeless population. The diversity of this community is valued by most
of its citizens, but it also brings challenges. The community has large Makonde, Makua and Yao populations.
The majority of St. Michael and all angels parishioners live in Mtwara town.
St. Michael and all angels is a part of the Anglican Church of Tanzania, and the Diocese of Newala. We
acknowledge that Jesus Christ is the only son of God, and that through his death and rebirth we are
assured of eternal life. We are a liturgical church and worshiping with words.
Celebrating the Holy Eucharist is at the very core of all our worship. In the bread and wine of this holy meal,
we believe that Christ is truly present, renewing the forgiveness of our sins and encouraging us to do the
work that lies ahead. We are believed that we are saved by grace through faith, and the Holy Scripture
contains all things necessary for salvation. We are living in joyful and the power of the Holy Spirit who is
present with us.
Though stable in terms of who we are, also look to the future to plan for who we could be. Worshipers of St.
Michael and all angels have a vision for the future. A clear priority is to attract youth, adults and families
with children to our church. Another priority is to develop and implement a comprehensive strategy to
reach new people and incorporate them into the life of the church.
We perceive ourselves to be a warm congregation, with high levels of satisfaction and pleasure among
members. We are a group who is able to deal with conflict well and whose members are very satisfied with
how much the decision-making structures and processes of the church are open to our concerns and input.
Further, St. Michael and all angels congregants are “highly likely” to believe that our faith and spirituality
are central to our lives; believe strongly that our church helps members identify individual gifts and
ministries; are “extremely likely” to think that Christian education is a life-long process; and find the
worship experience exceptional, in terms of quality and spiritual content
We are the apostolic church. We confess Jesus Christ and the faith of the apostles as recorded in the
Holy Scriptures. We believe the authority of the Bible is supreme in all matters of faith, principles, behavior,
and it is to be trusted.
We are a catholic church. The word catholic literally means universal. This means we understand
ourselves to be part of the community of believers that began with Jesus' first followers, is alive today, and
will continue until Christ comes again.

STRENGTHS
St. Michael and all angels is a vibrant, open and inclusive parish. There are many things
on which we can hang our hat. Here are some:
the mix of traditional and contemporary worship styles
the openness and inclusiveness of our family
the friendly, welcoming nature of our people
the variety projects and breadth of ministries available
the support for each other in our ministries
the energy, drive and vision to pursue new ministries & churches
Congregation during the service
CHALLENGES
We recognize that we constantly need to review and adapt our approach in
the light of changing circumstances and of the challenges that we face. Some
of our strengths are also our challenges; not because we don’t do them well,
but because we feel the need to take them even further. The most pressing
challenges at present are these:
The need to reach out to members of our community who are not
actively involved in the parish
The struggle with finances (although we are on a relatively sound
financial footing, we are always seeking to grow new ministries,
projects and opportunities which challenge us financially)
The need to build and expand emerging new ministries and projects.
The limitations of our physical space for the variety and types of
ministries that regularly take place at St. Michael and all angels
The need to extend our outreach programs

WHERE OUR FUTURE LIES
Our future lies with ministry. Our mission will include reaching out to youth and adults. We
have a vibrant active Ministry, which includes study groups, worship, and fellowship. There
are many directions in which this can grow from working on practical issues.
Our future lies with leadership. St. Michael and all angels is a congregation known for its
commitment to God. It is a wonderful community of caring people. You don’t need to be well
educated, highly talented or have an outgoing personality. We believe everyone is uniquely
created for a larger purpose in life, and that our highest fulfillment comes in serving others.
Our future lies among ourselves. We believe God is calling us to enlarge our faith and to be
open to the possibilities that await us. Each and every one of us is the future of St. Michael
and all angels. Great things are just ahead.
Our future lies on effective strategies reach the Christians to participate much in services
Our future lies on increasing number of Christians in our parish and make sure we hold
them from moving to another denomination
Our future lies on developing small churches belonging to St. Michael and all angels like
Likonde, Mikindani and Lilido. As well as finding area for establishing new churches
Our future lies to create new sources of income including hostel expansion, establish and
develop different project, and development of parish reserve ground (Plot No. 212, block H)
Also our future lies on getting parish vehicle(s)

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION
Children Education: "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven
belongs to such as these." (Matthew 19:14). Our children mean everything to us! Our Sunday school is active and
developing in ever new directions. We have a Nursery and Sunday school is offered for children from preschool age. We
have an active Youth Group. Children’s Sunday Schools have been a major strength of Christians over the years.

The Children's Ministry desires to provide a spiritual foundation for all participants so they are able to grow and stand
firm in their faith as they mature. We are prayerfully focused on equipping and enabling children to mature spiritually,
intellectually, physically, emotionally and socially in accordance with the example of Jesus (Luke 2:52).

We also believe that it is important for children to have an active role in the worship life of the congregation. We
encourage families to bring children to church with them, and we encourage them to sit in the front of the church so
they can see! …….“We loved you so much that we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God but our
lives as well, because you had become so dear to us.” (1 Thessalonians 2:8)

Adult Education: "Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your
mind." (Romans 12:2a). For members of St. Michael and all angels, Christian education is a lifelong process. We are
committed to spiritual growth in our hearts and our minds, and the many programmatic offerings of the church
demonstrate this thirst for growth in our parishioners. More specifically, in addition to the Rector’s Forum on Sunday
services, Morning services, centre services, Bible study, Fellowship and Spiritual Seminars.

FELLOWSHIP
Our community is strengthened by spending time together, both at the communion barrier, and outside of the church. We
continue to have new reasons to gather for fellowship on a regular basis.
Gathering together in small groups for fellowship has been happening since the beginning of the early Christian Church.
Our small groups are places where members of the Church family meet for fellowship and bible study during the week,
usually in the home of the person who is one among the member of the group.

WORSHIP SERVICES
Worship is at the heart of what we do. We gather weekly to glorify God through singing, scripture, and fellowship. Our
hope is that we are transformed by the Holy Spirit to live more like Jesus in our daily lives. We come back together week
after week expecting that God’s Spirit will change us.
We offer two Sunday morning worship services. The first service (7:00 am) is “Informal Anglican” in style with
contemporary music selections led by a multi-generational worship team and has a regular attendance of 280 adults and
20 children. Our 9:00 am service is a “Traditional” style service, with hymns and is normally around 120 adults and
30 children. Our congregation appreciates being able to attend either service as both services are multigenerational.
Our congregation appreciates having a variety of people involved in our worship services. The emphasis in these
services is sincere worship with strong Bible teaching/bible reading, songs, sermon and prayer.

OUR FINANCIAL POSITION
The financial position of St. Michael and all angels is relatively sound. Stewardship at
the parish involves the full scale of financial contributions, offerings of service, and
gifts of time and talents from our members to support our ministries and carry the
parish forward to the future.
This extraordinary growth in revenues did not come without a great deal of hard work
on the part of the parish. However, we do recognize that continued growth in revenues
at a time when ordinary religions are experiencing declines both in attendance and
offerings will be a challenge to maintain. We will continue to work to maintain a sound
financial position by focusing on the needs and goals of Anglicans in the area and
encouraging good stewardship of all God’s gifts.
In addition to regular offerings, revenue is generated through Christmas and Easter
Envelopes and Memorial Donations. Additional revenues are realized from special
events such as auctions.

The Mtwara region of Tanzania contains a rich and unique tradition of performing arts among the Makonde, Makua and
Yao tribes. Because of Mtwara’s isolation many traditional dances have not yet been lost to modern trends, until now.
With development, radios and televisions are making their way into rural Mtwara, and many people are being drawn into
current modern trends of music and fashion, abandoning their interest in traditional dance and music. But there are
some who still treasure it and wish to perform, and many village elders wish to serve as advisors to young performers.
Because of the immediate risk of loosing these cultural treasures forever and the social (and economic) value in
preserving and promoting them, ADEA, (the center for African Development through Economics and Arts – a Mtwara NGO
established in 2003) is proposing the launching of the MaKuYa performing arts festival. The purpose of this festival is the
perpetuation, preservation and promotion of the traditional dances and culture of the Mtwara region.
The long term vision of this festival is annual event that will include art exhibits, craft fairs, demonstration,
performances, parades and competitions.* Such an event is needed urgently in Mtwara to promote, encourage, and
document these traditional treasures that are at risk of being lost forever.
