Art of Time Ensemble
Andrew Burashko, piano
Stephen Sitarski, violin
Thomas Wiebe, cello
Barry Shiffman, violin
Art of Time Ensemble is one of Canada’s most innovative
and artistically accomplished music ensembles. Created
by visionary pianist Andrew Burashko (above), Art of Time
enjoys a reputation for compelling and thought-provoking
programs.
For their Music in the Morning debut, Art of Time explores
the music of Erich Korngold, including his masterful Suite
Op 23, for piano, two violins and cello. Korngold, most
famous as a composer for Hollywood films of the golden
age of the silver screen, was often compared to Mozart as
a young composer, and was called a ‘musical genius’ by
the great Gustav Mahler.
“…this Korngold suite was not only an experiential outpouring
that was dramatic and varied, and filled to bursting with brilliant
and fleeting images, it was a richly chromatic expression of late
Romantic music.”—the live music report
“Some of the best evenings that I have witnessed in Toronto have
been performances by Andrew Burashko’s Art of Time Ensemble.”

Judy Loman, harp
Monica Whicher, soprano
Acclaimed by The Guardian as ‘poignantly expressive,’
soprano Monica Whicher joins one of the world’s foremost
harp soloists, Judy Loman, in a pairing that has critics
raving, “I hung, wonder-struck, on every note and nuance
the whole way through—and I think you will, too” (Lindsay
Koob, American Record Guide).
Monica Whicher has been a featured soloist with many
of North America’s premier early music ensembles, opera
companies, and symphony orchestras.
Recognized as one of the world’s foremost harp virtuosos,
Judy Loman became Principal Harpist with the Toronto
Symphony in 1960. She is a recipient of a Canadian Juno
Award for best classical recording.
For these concerts, the duo will perform an eclectic program
including some excerpts from their recent recording,
‘Lullabies and Carols.’

The Bach Cello Suites
Colin Carr, cello
The greatest recital series’ and concert halls in the world—
the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center in New York,
the Gardner Museum in Boston, London’s Wigmore Hall
—all agree: Colin Carr’s performance of Bach’s famed
Cello Suites is “no ordinary Bach playing, but an original
and highly personal interpretation.”
Cellist Colin Carr “is a musician who reaches deeply inside
the music and uses his instrument to deliver surprising
discoveries” (The Washington Post). Hear him perform
Suites Nos. 1 and 6 for his Music in the Morning debut.
“Carr’s velvety tone is a delight in itself, and his music making
is no less satisfying.” —strad magazine

The Winners’ Tour The Cecilia String Quartet
& Georgy Tchaidze, piano
January 9–11, 2013
Min-Jeong Koh, violin
Sarah Nematallah, violin
Caitlin Boyle, viola
Rachel Desoer, cello
This is a rare chance to hear the top prizewinners of two
of the world’s most respected international music competitions. Calgary’s Honens International Piano Competition
and the Banff International String Quartet Competition
combine forces of their respective laureates for a musical
mash-up not to be missed. One can safely say that the
future of chamber music will be on display at this concert.
The Cecilia String Quartet continue to win praise following
their win at BISQC. European tours have taken the four
Toronto-based Canadian musicians to the Concertgebouw
(Amsterdam), Beethoven-Haus (Bonn), Wigmore Hall
(London), and Konzerthaus (Berlin). Their debut recording
with Analekta was released in March 2012.
In 2012 Russian pianist Georgy Tchaidze performs recital

Violinist Livia Sohn, cellist Luigi Piovano, and pianist
Bernadene Blaha came together to form Latitude 41 in

Since their formation, highlights of Latitude 41 appearances include the Newport Music Festival, the L’Ermitage
Foundation in Los Angeles, and “Sundays Live” at the
L.A. County Museum of Art.

Geoff Nuttall, violin

Christopher Costanza, cello
“Play every concert like it’s your last; every phrase like it’s
the most important thing you’ve ever said,” Geoff Nuttall
asserts. “Remember that the only reason you’re there is to
make people cry and sweat and shiver, and give them that
incredible sense of creation happening before your eyes.
That’s the reason we all play. Otherwise there’s no point.”
It’s an ethos that Music in the Morning audiences have
been privileged to know since the venerable quartet first
took to our stage more than 21 years ago. The SLSQ has
matured into one of the world’s great string quartets, and
MITM’s audience has been along for the ride with every
thrilling note.
Repertoire for this concert will include works by Antonin
Dvorak and Osvaldo Golijov.
“These are fearless musicians whose spontaneity stretches
past conventional interpretation and probes the music’s
imaginative limits.” —the washington post

Exploring the
Bach Cello Suites
with Joseph Elworthy
Although Bach’s cello suites are
among the best known works
of classical music, they remain
shrouded in mystery: no original
manuscript, no known date of
composition. For whom were
they written? Were they actually
written for the cello?
Vancouver Academy of Music
Executive Director, Joseph
Elworthy, who has studied,
performed, and recorded the suites, unravels
some of the mystery behind the work. Featuring some of Vancouver’s most promising young
cellists performing selected movements,
Elworthy provides insight into what makes
this music so extraordinary.
Music in the Morning presents another season
of conversation and musical exploration curated
by Founding Artistic Director, June Goldsmith.
Celebrated for her enduring contribution to
the musical life of Vancouver, June is the recipient of
the Order of Canada and the Order of British Columbia.
Ever-passionate about sharing her love of music with
others, she will host this inspiring and diverse four-part
learning series.

Adventures in Baroque
Performance
with Tamara Bernstein
“Are you sure that’s the same
piece?” Music of the early
Baroque leaves so much up to
the performers that the same
piece can be literally unrecognizable from one interpretation to
another —even when all are on
period instruments. This talk celebrates the
creativity and imagination of performers and
composers, as we compare recordings of
glorious, passionate music by 17th-century
composers Isabella Leonarda, Heinrich Biber
and Henry Purcell, as well as the giant of the
High Baroque, J.S. Bach.
Tamara Bernstein has published over 1300
articles, most of them in The Globe and Mail
and The National Post, and has made numerous
documentaries and features for CBC Radio Two.
Since 2001 she has been artistic director of
Summer Music in the Garden, the free
concerts held in the Toronto Music Garden.

The Songs of George Gershwin
with Rob Kapilow
With his diverse array of talents and his infectious
enthusiasm for all things musical, Rob Kapilow is committed to bringing the pleasures of music to audiences
of all ages and backgrounds. For this Composers and
Coffee lecture, Rob Kapilow will introduce us to the
songs of one of the most significant and popular American
composers of all time, George Gershwin. Word by word,
note by note, Kapilow will take apart some of America’s
most recognizable pieces of music ever written—slow
them down and unravel them. In so doing, he shows us
why these pieces are so extraordinary and are still vital
and beloved today.
Kapilow will be joined on stage by soprano, Melanie Conly.
“Rob Kapilow ‘leaps into the void’ dividing music
analysis from appreciation and fills it with exhilarating
details and sensations.”—the

Director, UBC Opera

an opera singer? What is it like being on an opera
stage? Is it really a glamorous life style? Join us
at Music in the Morning and find out some of the
answers to these and other questions. Come and
hear the secrets and hidden truths of the opera
world with Nancy Hermiston, Head of the UBC

to be an opera star.
“What do you get when you mix the
shenanigans of the Blues Brothers
with the musical seriousness of the
Canadian Brass? Metales M5!”
—John Pitcher, Omaha World-Herald
Get ready for a lot of brass, a lot of music, and a
lot of fun as Mexico’s leading brass quintet unites
classical and world music, contemporary repertoire
and pop arrangements in a program that breaks
barriers of musical genres.
Since its founding in 2005, the five gentlemen of
Metales M5 have been combining their skills at
fine classical chamber music, non-stop audience
interaction, showmanship and their inimitable Latin
American charm, to create unique musical-theatrical
concert experiences.
In this 45 minute show, M5 presents an eclectic
range of short pieces, proving that you can play
on a garden hose, what a fugue and a concerto
are, and comparing a march with a fanfare. M5’s
contagious joy is sure to excite kids about music
and bring laughter and smiles from young and old!
Be prepared to buy your first trumpet!
