ACCOUNTING CLUB ANNUAL REPORT
2011-2012
ACCOUNTING CLUB
Fall activities:
-Due to small membership numbers, we decided to play monopoly and re-create the game to tie
in more with accounting principles. Our club also developed an "Accounting rules for
monopoly" guidelines sheet.
-In an effort to increase membership, we purchased t-shirts and designed posters advertising our
club. Our club also created a tri-fold billboard and accounting club business cards to be used and
handed out at the Club and Organizations Fair.
-On November
io", we celebrated
"International Accounting Day" by purchasing one case of
cookies from Baker Boy and donating them to various accounting firms in Dickinson that have
shown support for our program. We also used this as a means to advertise our annual "Buy a
gold bar (donut) on tax day" fundraiser held in the spring.
-On November 17th, we had a guest speaker, Jackie Miller from Everett Real Estate, speak to us
about becoming a future first time home buyer. She provided us with the current local prices in
Dickinson, along with average mortgage payments and information on how to obtain a loan from
a bank.
-We purchased recycling bags (flings) for S.O.T.A. (Students Other Than Average) in an effort
to help facilitate responsible use of the aluminum can recycling center located behind May Hall.
Spring activities:
-Our club put together an informative video on how to start a small business for the S.B.D.C.
(Small Business Development Center). To incorporate the university in our video, we came up
with the idea of having Buster the Blue Hawk come to accounting club asking for help in starting
up his own construction business called "Best in the West Nest Builders."
The idea was that due to all the oil activity here, blue hawks were having a difficult time fmding
affordable bird nests in Dickinson. As a result, Buster saw a potential business opportunity for
himself building affordable bird nests for blue hawks.
We used the ND New Business Start-Up Checklist which consisted of 13 sections. Each member
of our club was assigned various sections and completed their own research on those sections.
On the section involving the hiring of employees, accounting club went to the Brady Martz office
and met with Mr. Nathan Sorenson to film that part of the video. On the section involving opening
a company bank account, accounting club went to the Dakota Community Bank and met with Mr.
Jeremiah Thorpe to film that part of the video. Professor Scott Hanson volunteered to play Buster
for the filming of this video.
-During the month of March, the company, Farm Credit Services, came to our university to
conduct job interviews. To prepare, club members created an informative brochure to be handed
out to classes prior to the event. The billboard was then redone to make it more appealing. Other
members developed information packets which were then posted to the billboard.
-On April 5th, accounting club went on a tour at Baker Boy to see their new expansion and learn
about their new operations.
-On April 16th, we held our annual "Buy a gold bar (donut) on tax day" fundraiser. The proceeds,
totaling $107.25, were all donated to the "God's Child Project." One of our members was
involved in this project, so our club took this as an opportunity to support her and all the other
university students and faculty who volunteered.
-Our club purchased a $50 Wal-Mart gift card as a donation to be used at the "Angry Blue
Hawks" relay for life event sponsored by S.O.T.A. Professor Scott Hanson volunteered to play
Buster for this event.
-On May 9th, accounting club took a tour of the Brady Martz and Associates office and the State
Auditor's office at the Capital in Bismarck. While at the Capital, we met the State Auditor,
Robert Peterson. Along with learning about various job detail requirements, we also learned
about upcoming job openings within the state.
-Throughout the semester, members of accounting club had been working with the Dickinson
Parks and Recreation Office on devising a plan to fix up the local Phil Patterson Memorial
Bandshell. On May is", the plan had been fmalized and accounting club members volunteered
approximately 10 hours of their time to paint the entire front section of the Bandshell including
the railing. The DSU Accounting club has also initiated a plan to do a yearly maintenance and
clean-up at the Bandshell.
