READING
All rising 5th-through-8th-grade students: read Wonder by R.J. Palacio. For students that have already read Wonder,
we invite you to read R.J. Palacio’s follow-up novel: Auggie & Me: Three Wonder Stories.
In addition, each student must read their class assigned book and complete a Literary Analysis (see attached) on
the following:
Rising 5th: Read The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis
Rising 6th: Read Hatchet by Gary Paulsen
Rising 7th: Read Number the Stars by Lois Lowry
Rising 8th: Read Lord of the Flies by William Golding
Suggested grade-level books for students who want an additional challenge:
Rising 5th: Out of My Mind by Sharon M. Draper; The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo

MATH
All students are required to complete a summer math skills course-level workbook. Workbooks have been ordered
based on the needs and strengths of each individual student and will be available for purchase at the Front Office or
Summer Book Fair.
All summer reading books and review workbooks will be available for purchase at the
Summer Book Fair May 25, 26, & 27 in the Media Center.

12. Perspective Statement: A perspective statement reveals your perspective.
A perspective statement should be a fresh idea or opinion that is supportable
based on facts or evidence taken from the story. A perspective statement
must also be interesting and not immediately obvious. It must elaborate an idea
that most readers would find new and refreshing, rather than familiar
or self-evident. A perspective statement often suggests a particular way of
reading or understanding a story, an interpretation that the average reader
will not see right away. The best perspective statements are personal
and specific rather than general.
