PROGRAM OVERVIEW Canterbury School’s Bring Your Own Technology (BYOT) program allows students to bring and use their own personal electronic devices at school. The program is designed to equip our students with the 21st century skills they need to think globally, lead with innovation, and change the world well into the future. It is important to note that technology is not a replacement for quality teaching, it is an enhancement to our current curriculum. The content and curriculum are what drive everything, and technology allows our faculty to provide a richer experience for students. MISSION The purpose of BYOT is to promote and support Canterbury’s Mission and Vision through the use of exceptional technology systems, solutions, and services that inspire innovative teaching and learning. VISION STATEMENT In order to prepare students for success in the art of leading a meaningful life, Canterbury School envisions an academic environment focused on inquiry-based learning. With this in mind, we believe that technology serves as both a tool for learning that expands our instructional repertoire and a vehicle that broadens the learning capacity of teachers and students alike. If your child takes their device to a Canterbury teacher or staff member for assistance, Canterbury assumes no liability for the condition of the laptop. Any actions taken by our staff are solely for the assistance of that child. Staff will not make physical changes to a device without permission from the student or parent. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Do I have to purchase a new device? No, if you have a device already that meets our minimum specifications, your son/daughter may use it as their BYOT device. If you need assistance in obtaining a device, please contact Susan Ryan, Chief Financial Officer, at [email protected] How secure will my child’s device be at school? Lockers are available for students to store their devices when not in use, and after school if participating in cocurricular activities. When students attend physical education and assemblies, they will need to follow the procedures for safe storage of their device – locking their bag in their locker. Students are responsible for the safety of their devices and for following these procedures. Each student needs to protect the device with a password, and use an appropriate photo of him/herself as a screensaver. What about on-line safety and cyberbullying? Canterbury School’s Technology Responsible Use Agreement is signed by every student and sets the expectations for students and parents. Students are required to: 1. Be a safe user whenever and wherever they use information and communication technology (ICT). 2. Be responsible whenever and wherever they use technology, and support others by being respectful in how they talk to and work with fellow classmates. They are to never write or participate in online bullying. This includes forwarding messages and supporting others in harmful, inappropriate or hurtful online behavior. 3. Report to an adult if they feel unsafe or uncomfortable online, or see a friend being unsafe or being made to feel uncomfortable by others. What are students responsible for at school? 1. Using all ICT according to our Technology Responsible User Agreement. 2. Displaying digital citizenship. 3. Following the teachers’ instructions around the use of devices. 4. Charging the device at home and during the school day. 5. Saving work and backing up to the Cloud. (Google Drive and/or Jump Drive) Please note: Canterbury School is not responsible for lost information on Google Drive, therefore, students should keep a second backup). 6. Safe keeping of the device when not in use. 7. Carrying the device in his/her school bag from class to class. How can devices be used to support student learning? Student learning will be enhanced when devices are used to support program goals and meet individual needs through: 1. Personalized learning experiences and preferences, 2. Development of strengths and neutralization of weaknesses, 3. A sense of responsibility for their learning process. Students will use their devices in focused, productive ways including: 1. Researching, studying and evaluating information. 2. Producing multimedia presentations. 3. Collaborating online with teachers, students, other schools, and professionals across the globe. 4. Uncovering and applying relevant information as part of an informed, decision-making process. 5. Submitting materials for assessment and learning how to structure information. Will my child be expected to use his/her device both at school and at home? Yes. One of the goals of Canterbury’s BYOT use is universal access. This means access to learning tools at home and school. We will guide and monitor device use at school and parents will need to guide and monitor use at home. Please note that devices are tools for learning at school. They will complement and enhance the learning environment. Something is wrong with my child’s device. Who fixes it? The upkeep of student-owned devices will be the responsibility of each student and their family. My child’s book bag is already too full; how do you expect him/her to carry a device, too? With a personal computing device, your child will be able to replace many paper documents with electronic versions lessening the need for many notebooks and binders. Over time, this will alleviate the heavy book bag and overflowing locker situation. Can students access inappropriate websites during school? Canterbury School utilizes web-filtering software to prevent students from accessing inappropriate web sites. The Canterbury “guest” network will provide the same content filtering. While Canterbury School uses filters, simply setting up these firewalls will not teach students how to use the internet safely and ethically; parents and teachers must help students learn how to do so. We will work closely with the staff to develop classroom management techniques that will ensure students’ safe navigation of the internet. In addition, digital citizenship will become a natural part of the curriculum. Will the students be allowed to share their personal devices with others? While we appreciate the art of sharing, we believe students should only be permitted to use their own device. This will prevent students from being held responsible for damage to another student’s device. What if my child’s device is stolen or damaged? Canterbury School accepts no responsibility for personal property brought to school by students. Students who bring a device to school assume total responsibility for the device. Devices that are stolen or damaged are the responsibility of the student and their parents or guardians. Students should follow the School’s procedures in the event of theft or intentional damage.
