Summer is quickly upon us. The days are now hot, but the pool is quite refreshing at the Club, as are the cold beers and other beverages served up at the bar. The summer schedule remains quite busy as we prepare for our Capdevielle event in just a few weeks. Our team is very competitive and is expected to make a good showing this year right outside our Club windows. Come and support your sailing team. See Mike LaSarge’s Rear Commodore report for more on the upcoming sailing events and our performance at the recent GYA Challenge Cup event in Gulfport. The House Committee continues to oversee the interim management of the Bar and Galley, while many folks continue to tell us how things are improving. The staff is working hard to give you the best meals and show you what they can really do. See more about our Bar and Galley in Brad Broadus’ Vice Commodore’s report for more on what is up in the House. You have already been emailed about some July 4th activities. Sounds like a good weekend to be at the Club. Our Harbor is being better utilized with an increase in dockage so far this year and folks are keeping an eye on its upkeep. Be sure to let Tom Batty or Hank Schwarz know if your area needs attention. Feel free to let them know if you can handle some of the repairs. We are still trying to squeeze a little funding to renovate the Men’s room, fix standing water and potholes in the parking lot, make flooring repairs in the kitchen, etc., so hopefully we can get those items underway if we keep improving on the Harbor rent and Bar and Galley sales. The Blue Angels will be performing at Pensacola Beach on July 10th and 11th. That’s where we’ll be along with quite a few of our other members that weekend. Wherever you spend your summer weeks, please be safe and keep the Club in mind for your plans. See you at soon the Club and on the water, Steve Zito, Commodore Official Web Site: www.mobileyachtclub.org Page 2 Rear Commodore’s Report Vice Commodore’s Report First of all, congratulations to Mobile Yacht Club’s Challenge Cup team for their well earned 3rd place win. The Challenge Cup is the most highly contested series on the Gulf Coast, and to be only a couple of points from first place shows what the sailors of this club are really capable of. Summer is here and the sailing season is in full swing. It’s been great seeing you out on the water on Thursday nights and on the weekends. I would like to personally thank our Capdevielle and GYA Challenge Cup Teams for their fine efforts in representing the Mobile Yacht Club with their professionalism and sailing skills. I’d also like to thank Board Member Josh Murray for his outstanding efforts in getting the harbor WiFi online for your convenience. The Summer Regatta on July 18th and 19th is our Capedevielle Regatta, where we host teams from the other clubs around the GYA – kind of like the Challenge Cup, except the races are sailed in Flying Scots. And the racing is every bit as intense. In addition this regatta is considered the practice regatta for the Junior Liptons, so if you want to see the up and coming generation of expert young sailors competing, come on out and help or just watch. See the Notice of Race for the schedule and contact information. I wish everyone a happy Fourth of July and in case this doesn’t reach you prior to the event, I hope you had a chance to enjoy the camaraderie and fireworks at the Club. Lastly, this may be the last year for just the Flying Scots, as this fall a new boat will be chosen as the GYA Capdevielle boat. The new boat, either the VX or Viper, will be much more exciting to sail and watch. Fair Winds and Smooth Sailing, Mike LaSarge Rear Commodore Brad Broadus Vice Commodore 2015 Challenge Cup Sailors for Mobile Yacht Club turned in a very respectable performance to finish third at the 36th Gulf Yachting Association’s (GYA) Challenge Cup Regatta contested on the Mississippi Sound at Gulfport Yacht Club June 19-21. MYC started strong with finishes of 1-2-23 in the first race. The second race results were not as kind. Showing tenacity MYC came back in race 3 with three bullets! This was the club’s best performance since 1998. Mobile Yacht Club is becoming recognized as one of the top sailing yacht clubs in the GYA for both one design and handicap racing. The star of the team was Lee Creekmore’s Creekmore 26 SCOUNDREL. SCOUNDREL was sailed by Lee Creekmore Skipper (also designer and builder), Troy Cruthirds (sailmaker for the winning sails), Robby Schmidt, Lennard Luiten, Cindy Timmons and Leo Manuel. As Lee had designed and built this fine yacht over 30 years ago, the team and boat were certainly the crowd favorite at the regatta. A B C MYC MYC MYC D MYC NEW WAVE CHERRY BABY MOONGLADE SCOUNDREL They did not disappoint. SCOUNDREL won every race except the ill-fated race 2, when a torn spinnaker kept them from running the table. Creekmore’s team sailed head to head with Southern Yacht Club’s very well-sailed Bruja (who a lot of people thought was unbeatable) and took the overall class bullet. In class C, Don Faircloth’s Pearson Flyer, MOONGLADE, fought well and ended up third. They narrowly missed second by one point. Josh Deupree skippered the well prepared boat and was in the podium hunt all the way. Josh’s team members were John Marshall, Banc Marshall, Mike Bullen, Casey Golemon, Don Faircloth, Jennifer Vereen and Jeff Guice. CHERRY BABY, MYC’s B class entry, was skippered by Wes Stanley. Cherry Baby came to the regatta ready to rumble. They also had bad luck in the second race with a spreader bracket failing. Wes and his tactician Zane Yoder put a tremendous MELGES 32 ODR MELGES 24 ODR PEARSON FLYER 30 CREEKMORE 26 131 9 15 96 BILL WHISTON W.STANLEY 168 138 J.DEUPREE 4876 159 L.CREEKMORE effort into preparing the Melges 24 for the regatta. The bottom of the boat was long boarded with a finishing touch of “eel snot” and certainly had the slickest bottom of any boat participating in the regatta. CHERRY BABY’s team also included Mark Lockard, Andrew Brennan, Chad Foster and Savannah Vereen. Bill Whiston skippered his Melges 32 NEW WAVE as MYC’s A class entry. Erna Whiston, Dr. Cesar Roca, Dr. Randall Boudreaux, Eugene LeVert, Steve Lange, Kevin Uteg, and Judd Chamberlain were the team members. New Wave started with a third and finished strong with a second. Unfortunately, the MYC race 2 jinx was also suffered by missing the race committee’s communication after an extended storm watch delay. Tom Batty served as Team Captain this year. He did an excellent job of keeping the diverse group of sailors headed mostly in the right direction. Tom, Janace and Josh Murray also did a wonderful job of providing support boat service keeping the teams watered up and fed.
