Church of the Sacred Heart
PARISH MISSION STATEMENT
Together we foster a welcoming spirit of unity while honoring
our diversity which leads to a graced harmony among us since
Christ is the center of all we are and do.
SIXTH SUNDAY
IN ORDINARY TIME ~ FEBRUARY 12, 2017
BE RECONCILED WITH YOUR BROTHER, AND THEN COME AND OFFER YOUR GIFT
In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus seems pretty rough on religious people. In the Sermon on the Mount
(Chapters 5 through 7), Jesus frequently speaks to people who know the Law of Moses, and to those who
hold positions of authority in the Jewish community. Jesus was shaking them up! In today’s Gospel,
when he interprets specific portions of the Law, he relates the Law to the deeper regions of the human
heart. He challenges his listeners, and us, to see what we hide from ourselves. If we are not diligent, we
can us a system of ethics or religious law to assure ourselves and others that we are morally upright.
When this happens, we can think there is no need for us to reflect or to change, and we have no need for
forgiveness. Jesus reminds us that we can sometimes use religion to distant us from the difficult, ongoing
work of self-reflection and repentance.
LIFE IN THE REIGN OF GOD
When Jesus challenges his listeners in today’s Gospel, he does not seek to humiliate them or to trap them
in guilt or shame. His challenges are part of his larger message of the graciousness of God. Jesus is describing life in the reign of God, which is the heart of is teaching and ministry. He is describing those who
flourish there: people who seek reconciliation, who honor both women and men, who speak truthfully. Jesus invites his listeners to live in the reign of God, on earth as in heaven. These are the meek, the poor,
the merciful and pure-hearted, as described earlier in the Beatitudes. They are aware of their flaws, but
they also know that God is with them, cherishing and guiding them. They are forgiving of others because
they have been forgiven. They continually strive to listen to God in prayer. They are able to live with an
open heart, and to live in trust in God. As Jesus’ listeners today, we are called to live the same way.

A Valentine Prayer
I said a Valentine prayer for you
and asked the Lord above
to fill your heart and bless your soul
With the precious gift of love.
I asked Him for sincere love
The kind that's meant to stay
Just like the generous love
You give to those you touch each day.
I prayed for love from family
And from every cherished friend
Then I asked the Lord to give you
His love that knows no end.

SACRED HEART CHURCH ~ RIVERTON, NEW JERSEY
Make a Joyful Noise
With Voices, Hands and Hearts
Sacred Heart Music Ministry
Church musicians often quote St. Augustine, “He who sings, prays twice”, especially whenever encouraging congregations to sing. But St Augustine also wrote that “singing is for the one who
loves”. Being able to create music within our liturgies is a sign of God’s love for us and our love for
Him -HEARTS.
Sacred Heart Music Ministry always welcomes people to join the various music ministries,
but right now there is an immediate need for cantors and instrumentalists (keyboard/organ)- VOICES and HANDS.
Cantors are the leaders of the liturgy’s
sung prayer. Although the ability to read music is
a plus, it is not a necessity. Practices and practice
recordings help the cantor to learn or review the
music scheduled. A pleasant voice, capable of
singing on pitch and a willingness to prepare,
practice and pray through song are the main requirements.
Another accompanist/substitute (organ/
keyboard) is needed for 2 Sundays each month.
Although a qualified organist/ keyboardist would
be the ideal, someone who plays piano only and
can play the hymns and Mass parts would be a
most welcome addition to our ministry.
If you are interested, please call the music
office 856-786-5380 and leave a message. You can
also speak to one of the cantors after Mass or Susan Barnett after the 10:30 am or 12 pm Masses
(choir loft).
