The McGill Sports Complex is not only a place to exercise and compete, it’s also a hub of social activity. Whether you play on an intramural team, enjoy pick-up games of soccer, basketball or volleyball, take a fitness class or play on a varsity team, the gym is a great way to meet fellow students. Former varsity athletes consistently remark on how they created friendships with teammates that far outlasted their athletic and university careers. That proof lies in our celebration this fall of the 1960 football team who won the university national championship 50 years ago. This remarkable delegation of athletes has gone on to build successful lives outside of McGill, yet have remained in touch with their teammates throughout the numerous decades since hoisting the Yates Cup in triumph. Similar experiences have occurred amongst our intramural teams with alumni remaining active in our leagues years after graduation. The “50’s” have been playing intramural hockey for 15 years or so and show no signs of hanging up their skates anytime soon. It’s this kind of bond between friends that athletics has been known to forge. So don’t limit your university experience to the classroom. Join a team, learn a new sport, play a game of pick up or work up a sweat with your fellow students in fitness and recreation classes. The McGill Sports Complex is more than a collection of athletic facilities, it’s a vital part of campus life. Built in 1914 on the grounds of Madonald Park, the stadium was originally called McGill Graduates Stadium before being named after WW1 war hero Percival Molson in 1919. Since then there have been regular updates and renovations, the most recent of which took place over the last nine months. Today’s version of Percival Molson Stadium keeps the best of the old and combines it with the best of the new. More seats (5000 in the east end-zone and south side), a new south-side concourse and sky boxes for corporate clients have been added and the stadium itself has be spruced up. Most of these improvements were made at the behest of our most famous tenant, the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League. But there is little doubt that McGill students and staff will benefit from the renovations. Molson Stadium is known for its great site lines and intimate atmosphere. And while the number of fans watching a typical Redmen or Martlet game will struggle to fill the 25,012 capacity, most McGill fans congregate in significant enough numbers on the south side to create a critical mass that is more than capable of cheering on the home team. But it’s not just the improvements in the stadium that will be of benefit to McGill. The eastern entrance off Mount Royal Park has been significantly enhanced. 8 Intercollegiate Sports Improved landscaping along the east road that runs up toward the McConnell Arena is more pleasing both esthetically and environmentally. And the concourse at the stadium entrance level is a great place for McGill fans to gather to enjoy a pre-game refreshment while getting pumped up for the action to come. Once in the stadium, McGill fans can enjoy a collegial atmosphere made all the more pleasant by the stadium improvements. As usual, fans can quench their thirst and enjoy our environmentally friendly “Cans in the Stands” service as well as grab a bite from the many concessions outlets. To showcase the stadium we have some great action planned for the season. Our Redmen soccer team made it to the CIS finals last year and is hoping for a return visit in 2010. The football team has an exciting young quarterback in Jonathan Collin, an up and coming kicker in Austin Anderson and a great pair of hands in veteran Charles-Antoine Sinotte. And our women’s soccer team is in contention for the top of the Quebec university league and has a run at being a contender in the national championships. Also on display in the stadium is our lacrosse and rugby teams who use it to practice and for select league games. But it’s not just the varsity teams that enjoy the stadium. Our intramural soccer and ultimate Frisbee leagues use the stadium for their games. And McGill’s many recreational runners train on the 400-metre track. This is a vast improvement from 1997 when the stadium stands were in disrepair and a tree had taken up residence in a section on the north side. No matter how good the game, McGill fans weren’t inclined to spend a beautiful fall day or evening cheering on the home team from bleacher seating that left splinters where splinters should never be. But that era of the stadium is now part of its storied history. Percival Molson Stadium, like McGill itself, ranks tops among Canadian universities. But don’t take my word for it, buy a ticket for a home game and see for yourself. Molson Stadium circa 1915-1919 McGill Athletics Magazine AtHlEtE PROFIlE Jonathan collin. QuarterbacK - redMen Football. by Meaghan Leonard Getting to Know JC. A native of Montreal’s South Shore, Jonathan Collin, 21, is proud to call Montreal his home and even more proud to be a McGill Redmen. Football is his game, which he says is largely due to the influence of his family. His uncle played at a competitive level and his grandparents founded his childhood football program. So strong was the pull of football that he gave up an opportunity to play major junior hockey in favour of being a quarterback. “It was either go for it in hockey, or play football and get an education,” said Collin. Currently in year two of a degree in secondary Education with an emphasis on history and geography, the quality of education was something Collin was looking for when deciding what university he would attend. “I had a lot of opportunities to go to different schools, but McGill (football team) seemed to be going places.” That combined with a “top notch” education and he was sold on becoming a Redmen. Although growing up idolizing Brett Favre and the Packers, JC is not your typical quarterback. The one thing he loves to do when he has a spare moment is spending time with his family. “My family is a huge part of my life,” said Collin. “They will travel anywhere to watch me play.” That dedication includes a 13+ hour drive to the Maritimes as well as a large cheering section for all home games. www.mcgill.ca/athletics Jonathan Collin gets advice on the sidelines. What else sets JC apart from the pack? Consider the way he prepares himself for games. His iPod playlist includes not just favourites Shwayze and Asher Roth but also a few French folk songs. And instead of head banging pump up tunes, JC much prefers the music of a classic country singer. “I’m pretty different than most football guys; I listen to a lot of Johnny Cash.” According to Collin a quarterback doesn’t need to be overly pumped up so a little Johnny Cash is perfect to help him stay calm and focused before a game. The family-loving Johnny Cash fan aside, JC is still an athlete with a lot on his plate. Balancing football, school, a job, and a social life isn’t easy. “Finding time to do everything you want in life is difficult,” says Collin. Being a student athlete has its advantages too of course. JC has learned how to prioritize his time so that he can be successful at both football and school. Part of that time management skill includes learning how to leave a bad loss on the field. And while he admits that it’s good for him and his teammates to look back on the games that they almost had, he reminds himself that “the sun’s still gonna come up tomorrow!” With that in mind, Collin is looking forward to the upcoming 2010 season. His seemingly simple goal for this season is “to win more games than last year.” In order to meet his objective both he and the team are well aware of the things that need to be different. “We want to be a team that will never quit and we want to establish an identity,” says JC . “We want to be known as something more than just the smart kids.” JC thinks that this year’s team is capable of great things. He credits his team as being “a great bunch of guys who all get along” but most importantly he is impressed with their attitude. “We’re all driven toward the same goal; everyone wants to win.” After all, learning how to deal with a loss is one thing, but celebrating a win as a team is something Collin is looking forward to doing more often this season. “I try not to dwell on it too much,” he says of his mood when his team comes up short. Former Martlet rugby player Laura Drudi, a second-year medical student at McGill University, spent the summer at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Ames Academy in the San Francisco area. Drudi, 21, was the only Canadian accepted among 650 applicants and is one of only 11 university students attending the Academy. Other honourees include Val St. Germain, a stellar Redmen offensive lineman who played 14 seasons in the Canadian Football League, Tambra Dunn, a highly-decorated distance runner and striker Brian Decaire who captained the soccer Redmen to a national championship in 1981. Selected in the builder category is former football and hockey coach Bob Pugh who served 13 years as director of athletics at the University’s Macdonald campus. Rounding out the slate is McGill’s legendary 1919 Yates Cup championship football team, which outscored their opponents by a lopsided 94-8 margin and featured a defence that did not concede a single touchdown. The induction luncheon, scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 30, 2010, officially kicks off the University’s Homecoming Week celebrations. Tickets for the event are $65 and can be reserved by contacting Kathryn Weaver at [email protected] or 514-398-7002. liGhtninG striKes Guy Boucher, a former team captain of the McGill University Redmen, was appointed head coach of the National Hockey League’s Tampa Bay Lightning in June. The 38-year-old native of Roxboro, Que., is the fifth former Redmen player to serve as a coach in the NHL and becomes the youngest current bench boss in the league. Standing beside Boucher as an assistant coach will be another McGillian Martin Raymond, who played for McGill during his college years and served another 14 seasons as head coach of the McGill University men’s hockey team. Coincidentally, Boucher’s rise through the coaching ranks began in 1996 as an apprentice to Martin Raymond with the Redmen, so the two are no strangers to working together. Boucher and Raymond also coached together last year in Hamilton, the AHL affiliate of the Montreal Canadiens. Raymond held the position of assistant coach to Boucher who was named AHL coach of the year. Nobes played four seasons at McGill as a centre and graduated as the ninth-leading scorer in Redmen history with 181 points, including 64 goals, in 131 career games. we want your shoes! The Reuse, Resole, Rerun program collects unwanted athletics shoes from the McGill community and local athletic groups and helps them find a new life somewhere else. In collaboration with Yes Inc’s Shoes for Africa (and more recently Haiti) and Nike’s Re-use-a-Shoe program, all donated shoes will either be reworn by those in need or broken down into workable raw materials for reuse. The campaign is on-going with special “blue boxes” tailored to accept gently used and worn out shoes. The receptacles are located at the McGill Sports Centre and are easily accessible to all gym users. To help defray shipping costs, donations of a toonie or loonie will be accepted during specific drives and by individuals dropping off shoes at our Sports Complex location.
