Runner Review 12-3-14

MS. BENOIT’S
5TH GRADE
RUNNER REVIEW

Literacy
Strategy – Propaganda is used to
influence how others think.
At home connection - Look for “real
world” examples. Encourage your child
to bring in propaganda examples in
advertising to share. Ads in magazines,
TV commercials, billboards, store
displays and menus can all spark
conversation. Some types of
propaganda are:
·
Overgeneralization – general
statements based on few
facts
·
Testimonial- statements from
celebrities or experts
supporting a product
·
·
·

Science: Students were excited to
meet our engineer volunteers (Mr.
Sharp and Mr. Irwin from IDOT) on
Tuesday afternoon. Marsh 5th
graders will be working closely with
these volunteers until the end of
February on the Rube Goldberg
project. Basically this project
encourages students to think like
scientists/engineers to design and
construct a contraption based on
their knowledge of simple machines.
The final goal is to get your
contraption to fold a piece of paper.
If you look up Rube Goldberg on You
Tube, there are many inspiring
videos. The competition for Rube
Goldberg will be Saturday, Feb 28 at
at Lincoln Land Community College.
More information will follow.
Spelling Pattern: Vowels in
unstressed syllables are not always
spelled the way they sound. Ex:
duzen is actually spelled dozen
Reminders:
Practice by spelling the word as
it sounds one time and then as it
is actually spelled 3 times.
Dec 4th: PTO Meeting at 6:30
Students are not supposed to
bring cough drops (per district
policy). Water bottles are okay.

well with his peers on projects. I am
