She worked to solve immigrant problems with the development of settlement houses.
After the Civil War, ( population, government ) changes, the growth of ( cities, farms ), and new ( schools, inventions )
produced interaction, and often, conflict between the different cultural groups that lived in the United States. They also produced problems in ( urban, rural )
areas.
Immigration increased for many reasons. Many people came to America because they
hoped for better ( houses, opportunities ). Others came looking for ( religious, educational ) freedom. Some people
came because they wanted to escape ( oppressive governments, democratic governments ) and find a place where they
could be free. Finally, there were those who came for the ( security, adventure ) involved with coming to America. For all
of these
reasons the population began to grow.
Cities were the destination of many Americans. Specialized industries such as the
( steel, oil ) industry in Pittsburgh and the ( meat packing, automobile ) industry in Chicago needed many workers. Many
( Indians, immigrants ) and people moving from ( rural, urban ) areas flocked to the cities in search of jobs.
Many new inventions contributed to the growth of industries in the United States. The electric light bulb invented by
( Henry Ford, Thomas Edison ) and the telephone invented by
( Alexander G. Bell, John D. Rockefeller ) helped spur the development of many businesses. Also over the next decades
industries began the shift from ( steam power to electric power, water power to steam power ).
As cities and industry grew so did the problems. Housing shortages were great and many of the newly arrived immigrants would crowd into areas where many members of their same group
lived in poverty. Those areas were called ( settlements, ghettos ). They lived in crowded apartment houses called ( tenements, slums ). To help solve the problems caused by such overcrowding ( machine houses, settlement houses ) were
created to provide child care, education , and medical care to these poor communities. One such place was Chicago’s Hull
House which was founded by ( Jane Addams, Andrew Carnegie ). Also political organizations known as ( political reformers, political machines ) grew and gained power by attending to the needs of the new immigrants and by providing them
jobs and housing. Many of the immigrants also faced different and unfair treatment because of their race, religion, or ethnic
background. That unequal treatment is called ( integration, discrimination ). Two groups who received especially bad treatment were the ( Chinese, Filipinos) and the ( Germans, Irish ).
Native Americans also faced many problems as more and more people moved westward
into Indian lands. Because of the frequent fights between the Indians and the newcomers the U.S. government forced many
Indians to leave their homes. They were made to live on ( reservations, ranches ) which were tracts of land set aside for
Indian communities. The government ordered the
( Sioux, Cherokee ) Indians into the reservations and they fought back. At the Battle of
( Little Big Horn, Nez Perce ) they killed General Custer and all of his men. Still within a few months they were forced to
surrender and move into the reservation. Another Indian group the
( Cheyenne, Nez Perce ) was forced off its land in the Pacific Northwest. Led by ( Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse, Chief Joseph ) they tried to escape into Canada. The U.S. Army captured them
only a few miles from the border and sent them to a reservation.
