Description of work
Installation (Camera Obscura)
I propose to install a “Camera Obscura” (dark room) in the East wing of the Byzantine
Museum, facing the museum’s inner courtyard.
A “Camera Obscura” consistently causes the natural phenomenon of the automatic
transference of a three dimensional space to its inverse image. The light rays enter the
dark room through an aperture, intersect, and then project the inverse image of the outside
world onto the surface facing the aperture.
The dark room is a rectangular prism made out of wood with a 120cm x 120cm base and
220cm height. The interior of the box is painted black. The user will observe the projected
image while seated in the dark room.
Selected section of the image is projected, so that the space of the museum courtyard
appears without the existing buildings. This is achieved by whitening those sections of the
projection with chalk. The whitened parts reveal the image of the space without the
buildings because the black parts absurd the part of the image that corresponds to the
building.
The presence of the image is ephemeral and un-created, by human hand, as it is caused
entirely by a natural phenomenon.
In the image I search the nature of representation, and it’s magical, poetical dimension.
