“CHAPLAIN’S CORNER”
HARD TIMES
Words cannot describe the pain many people are feeling at the passing of Matty Barclay at the Aussies. There is the personal pain for Steve, Donna and Lauren and their
families. The empty room, the brother who was a tease and the son that pushed
boundaries and had a cheeky grin will not come home. The pain will lessen over time
but his memory will not be forgotten.
Matty was a member of Dicky Beach Nippers for five years prior to his joining Maroochydore. Their pain is our pain along with our lifesaver mates across Australia. Some of
his age managers, coaches and the members in his age group may feel more grief
than others. Matty’s sacrifice appears to have been an accident which is the way his
parents see it, so why should we be any different. We patrol and compete in the water where a hit to the head can be fatal but is extremely rare.
Much, but not all of the media statements have been offensive and uninformed in an
effort to gain viewers but turning us off. Some people who made statements appear
to be making them for their own self interest. Ignore any negativity and stay positive,
you belong to a great organisation which cares about you and saves many lives.
You/we are part of a worldwide humanitarian organisation which does good.
We all need time to grieve. Give each other a hug, you are not alone, your club has
Rob Campbell, John Palmer and myself as Peer Support Officers, but support from
within your own family is generally best of all. Give yourself permission to cry. I like
many others have shed tears. Thank you to those who were concerned about my
health and rang my wife. You did me a great service.
Good Friday commemorates the death of Jesus Christ on the cross for our sin and
Easter Sunday his rising from the tomb prior to ascension into heaven to be an advocate for us.
God bless,
Granty

“BETWEEN THE FLAGS”
Last week we as a movement lost one of our own. Matthew started his Life Saving Life as a
Dicky Beach nipper before moving to Maroochydore. He will be forever remembered by the
greater Life saving movement. As a club we have paid our respects to his parents.
Matthews passing is a reminder to us all how fragile life can be and why vigilance and service
is required at all times whilst on patrol. The ocean and the waves can be unpredictable.
As Life Savers we need to remind ourselves at this time of all the great work we do and think
about how the skills and training have prevented and saved so many lives on our beaches
over the years.
As you are all aware support is available should it be required. The Peer Support officers did a
fantastic job at the Aussie titles helping those directly affected and are available to anyone
who needs the support.
We are rapidly approaching the end of the season with one month to go. This season we
have maintained our good record of quality patrols. We all need to continue to watch the
beach and continue to meet our obligations through to the long week end in May.
Please do not let your team down.
We have a couple of volunteer days which will require member to give up some of your time.
Please take the opportunity to do a little extra and meet some new faces on one of these
days.
The cost of running a Surf Club is not cheap. Kate Martin and the fundraising team have done
a terrific job with the Summer Surf Girl activities. Please all join me in wishing Kate all the best
in the upcoming judging week. Thank you for raising these essential funds.
Remember we have a general meeting programmed for April 21st. This is your opportunity to
get an update on what is occurring around the club and ask questions on where we are going into the future. Please attend and be part of the fellowship that will follow at the club
BBQ.
I would like to remind all members that the club management and associated committees
are manned by volunteers. Some of these members are in need of a batten change and
rest. If you have an interest in any position please feel free to ask what is involved and how
you could contribute to the future of the club.
We are looking at a uniform change next year which gives us the opportunity to have our uniforms sponsored and have the sponsor’s name on the back of the shirts. Should anyone know
a major sponsor who may wish to contribute significantly to the ongoing support of the club
next year please let me know so that we can talk to them about the opportunity?
I look forward to catching up with you all being vigilant on the beach between now and the
end of the season.
John Palmer Club Captain.
FINAL SURFGIRL EVENT

PRIZES, PRIZES, PRIZES!!!
Hey everyone!! Look for Treasure at Dicky Beach on Easter Saturday,
7th April, 2012. Dicky Beach Surf Lifesaving Club is having its famous
“Beach Dig” to raise funds for our Jupiters Summer Surf Girl entrant, Kate
Martin. Purchase a Miner’s Right for just $5.00 per person, young or old,
at the registration tent on the beach from 8.00am. Digging will commence at 9.00am in the specially roped-off area where more than 100
numbered bottle tops have been buried. Each numbered bottle top
represents a prize – passes to Fun Parks, a Stereo System, Beach Towel,
Sun Shelter, Cubby House and lots, lots more.
A Sausage Sizzle will be available from 7.30am, and the Westpac Rescue helicopter will perform a demonstration of rescue techniques at approximately 10.30am.
So come along, dig for ‘gold’, and help our volunteer lifesavers do what
they do best – Keeping you all safe at the beach!! For further information, contact Enid Traill on 5491 2616, or Dicky Beach SLSC on 5491
5742.
“NIPPER NATTER”
I would like to extend my thanks to the Dicky Beach Surf Life saving club community for allowing
my team of Chinese swimmers to stay at the club dorms last weekend. The swimmers loved the
opportunity to experience an Australian beach and a different type of swimming in Australia, a
big change to following the black line every session in an indoor northern Chinese training centre.
It was a great learning experience for the swimmers to participate in a Nippers session and the
feel of swimming in the surf at speed. My swimmers struggled in the surf in comparison to the
pool, keeping in mind that these swimmers are at a high level on the international stage it was
funny to see them struggle to make their way out past the break.
In comparison it was great to see how proficient the Dicky beach crew were at using the surf to
their advantage throughout the duration of the training session. It was impressive to see the level
of effort displayed by the Dicky beach athletes given their young age. I believe that this is testament to the coaches at the surf club and their “lead from the front” attitude.
The facilities at the club are of an excellent standard, and after staying in the dorms I am highly
envious of the facilities available to members. It is a great place to train and stay with an awesome weight training facility and the sea pool facility at Kings beach just a short jog away. It is
the perfect place for a motivated athlete to train and develop greatly in their sport.
I look forward to maintaining the connection with the club in the future and possibly a joint training camp with the athletes. I know that my athletes will remember the time they spent at Dicky
Beach, most have said to me it was the highlight of their sightseeing experience whilst in Australia.
Lastly, Thanks to Lindsay Smith and John Palmer for facilitating accommodation for my team during a busy time of year for the surf club.
Cheers

Courses Completed
Once again we have welcomed Pine Rivers State High School to the club and have completed yet another Bronze/
SRC course. Thanks to Ian Roberts and Mal Coyle. They couldn’t have picked a worse week to run the course, with
torrential rain and big surf; they were forced to move water activities to Mooloolaba!
We have been fortunate enough to run a Pain Management course at Dicky Beach and now are able to fully utilise
the kit that was installed at the beginning of the season. Thanks to Jude Allsopp and Sue Della Bianca for running
the course.
Ross Johnstone has also run an Observers course for age managers and Radio Operators. If you missed this
course there will be another soon. Ross has also run a Tractor Induction course which we will also run another
soon. Keep an eye out for the Club Announcement.
Peter Aitken and Wayne Findley have just completed a IRB Crewman course. Contact Peter Aitken
([email protected]) if you are interested in joining an IRB Drivers course during April.

“IRB REPORT”
Well it’s that time of year when the nights get longer, days become cooler and there is a distinct hint of 2 stroke racing fuel in the air!
Yes its time to get ready for the IRB racing season, with Ross Hutton coming out of retirement to once again lead us into battle for IRB glory it looks
like being another fun filled season. If you haven’t signed up yet its not
too late to join in ,all you need is a current IRB crew award and a few
weekends over winter to spare. If you are interested in joining up contact
myself or Rossco for training times etc. We are especially short of light
weight patients, no experience necessary!! The patients job is to sit out at
the can in a toasty warm wetsuit ( water is always warmer in Winter) and
wait to be rescued, once the boat arrives you will be gently lifted in and
made comfortable in your special position whilst the boat smoothly takes
you to shore and then you are asked politely to disembark whilst the crew
complete formalities. What could be a nicer way to spend a day by the
beach!
Congratulations to the 7 people who completed their crew awards during March and special thanks to the 2 Luke F’s for assisting with the course
and no roll overs either.
We have just purchased 4 new yellow fuel bags at the cost of $2000,
please look after these by not over filling them and checking for expansion during the day.
