Save these instructions in case they are needed for future reference. Also study the symbols that are shown on the product itself. Fig. 1.F Make sure that all steps are set at the same distance (27cm). All the telescopic ladders on the market in the Netherlands, must comply with the related Consumer Goods Act which sets out its requirements in its ‘Regulations on Portable Climbing Equipment’ (See the stickers on the telescopic ladder). Being able to work professionally and safely on telescopic ladders requires selecting the correct safety level of the Consumer Goods Act. O’Daddy telescopic ladders are not suitable for professional use. IN GENERAL: • Maximum usage weight: 120 kg. • To be used by a maximum of 1 person. Fig. 1.G Never retract the telescopic ladder by manually pressing the locking buttons, left and right under the rungs. Never unlock the telescopic ladder with one or two hands on, or in between rungs. Fig. 1.H Place one foot on the lowest rung to keep the ladder in position. Firmly hold the ladder in an upright position by placing one hand on the ladder stile. Start with the right-hand unlocking tab, by pushing it to the left. Subsequently push the left-hand unlocking tab to the right. Unlock the black tabs one by one. All sunsequent rungs will automatically slide in. CAUTION! All following rungs retract automatically. SAFETY DURING PULLING DOWN: Continuous attention during pulling down: When you pull down the ladder pay attention to the following, so you can prevent injuries to your hands or fingers: - Never place your hands between the steps. - Place your hands on the side bars (underneath the step you want to slide down). See image on the left. - Carefully read the safety-instructions in this manual. 6 BEFORE USE! • Maintain a telescopic ladder according to the instructions. •Remain alert. Concentrate when climbing a telescopic ladder and never do so under the influence of alcohol, medication or substances that may affect your ability to react. •Should you transport the telescopic ladder, ensure that the telescopic ladder is folded up and make sure that the telescopic ladder is properly supported and fixed in place. •On delivery and before every use of the telescopic ladder, check the condition and operation of all parts. A telescopic ladder must be completely collapsible! Make sure that all parts (including the feet and covers) are present. (Fig. 2.E) • Every time before use, inspect the telescopic ladder for any defects, such as deformation or wear. • Every time before using the telescopic ladder make sure that it is suitable for its intended use. • Only use the telescopic ladder for the purpose for which it has been made. •Never use a damaged or broken telescopic ladder. Temporary repairs are not permitted. Make sure that any damage to the telescopic ladder is repaired as soon as possible, at least before its next use, by a professional in this field. •As far as possible, ensure that the telescopic ladder is free from contamination by substances such as wet paint, mud, snow and oil. (Fig. 2.M) •Prior to use, carry out a risk analysis should you be obliged/required to do so by local or national legislation and regulations. • Never use a telescopic ladder backwards or upside down. (Fig. 2.R) • Destroy telescopic ladders if they are broken, worn-out or irreparable. • Telescopic ladders for professional use must be inspected periodically by an expert. POSITIONING AND/OR SETTING UP A TELESCOPIC LADDER •A telescopic ladder in ladder position has to be positioned in such a way that the distance from the foot of the telescopic ladder to the wall is approximately equal to a quarter of the operational lenght of the telescopic ladder. The set-up angle will then be circa 75o. (Fig. 2.F) •Always place the telescopic ladder on a firm, stable, horizontal surface, which it not slippery. This will ensure that the feet of the telescopic ladder cannot sink into the ground and/or slip away. Therefore, do not place the telescopic ladder on tables, boxes, crates or other unstable surfaces, such as muddy soil or loose sand. (Fig. 2.J) •Position a telescopic ladder in ladder position in such a way that each of its four points are adequately supported by a firm bearing surface, therefore never place the telescopic ladder against a window, against circular or narrow pillars or against corners, unless modified accessoires are used for that purpose. (Fig. 2.H) •Satisfy yourself that the telescopic ladder is sufficiently stable and/or, if required, is secured to ensure it cannot slip. •A telescopic ladder may never be repositioned if somebody is standing on a platform or step, or from a position that is higher than the the telescopic ladder. •Take extra precautions if the telescopic ladder has to be positioned in front of a door opening, an opening window or in a corridor, etc. Make sure that nobody can walk against or under the telescopic ladder. •Never place an aluminium telescopic ladder within a range of 2.5 m from non-insulated electrical components or low-voltage installations and networks which are under live current. •Never place an aluminium telescopic ladder in the vicinity of components of high-voltage installations. (Fig. 2.P) •Take care when using electrical equipment. Aluminium telescopic ladders conduct electric current. Always take precautions so that a power cable cannot become trapped or become caught when climbing, sliding or repositioning the telescopic ladder. Check beforehand that the electrical cable of your tools is not damaged. 7 • Telescopic ladders must always be positioned on their feet and not on the step. • Always place a telescopic ladder as close as possible to the work to be carried out. • Do not operate the unlocking sliders or the unlocking/locking buttons when someone is standing on the telescopic ladder. (Fig. 1.G) •Make sure that the sliders are clean so that they always move easily. •Before climbing the telescopic ladder you have to make sure that all rungs are locked. Check as follows: 1. Check if all safety windows are at least 85% green-coloured (Fig. 1.A, fig. 1.C.1) 2. Check if all unlocking buttons/locking buttons are protruding (Fig. 1.B) 3. Check if the closed locks are visible on the one but lowest rung (Fig. 2.C) 4. Check if you can hear the click-sound (Fig. 1.C.2) 5. Check every rung by pressing it downwards (Fig. 1.D) 5. For extra safety, the ladder has been designed in such a way that the ladder extends and retracts with a delay. As such, extending the ladder may require extra force.. 6. Check if all safety windows are at least 85% green-coloured (Fig. 1.A, fig. 1.C.1) 7. Check again if all unlocking buttons/locking buttons are protruding (Fig. 1.B) 8. Check every rung by pressing it downwards (Fig. 1.D) 9. Check if the distance between all rungs is equal. (Fig. 1.F) 10. Check if the closed locks are visible on the one but lowest rung (Fig. 2.C) PULLING DOWN AND EXTENDING A TELESCOPIC LADDER. Important! Follow the instructions below closely when collapsing and extending a telescopic ladder. This will help prevent fingers becoming caught between the steps and the uneven spaces between! Extending a telescopic ladder to its full height, option 1: 1. Place the telescopic ladder upright on a clean and stable surface. 2. Place one foot on the lowest rung to keep the ladder in position whilst extending. 3. When extending a telescopic ladder, start at the highest rung and extend it until the rung locks itself. This will only happen if the rung beneath is also moving upwards at the same time, during extending. Up to that moment the rung won’t lock. Listen carefully if you clearly hear the click-sound. (Fig. 1.C.2) The rung is locked when the locking switches (left and right under the rung) are completely protruded. (Fig. 1.B) 4. Repeat this process with each of the next higher rungs until the telescopic ladder is completely extended. 5. For extra safety, the ladder has been designed in such a way that the ladder extends and retracts with a delay. As such, extending the ladder may require extra force. 2.C) Extending a telescopic ladder to its full height, option 2: 1. Place the telescopic ladder upright on a clean and stable surface. 2. Place one foot on the lowest rung to keep the ladder in position whilst extending. 3.Start extending the telescopic ladder at the one but lowest rung and extend until the rung locks. (Fig. 1.F) 10.Check if the closed locks are visible on the one but lowest rung (Fig. 2.C) Tip: You can position the ladder flat on the ground in order to properly check the locking buttons and safety windows. Extending a telescopic ladder to an intermediate lenght. 1. Place the telescopic ladder upright on a clean and stable surface. 2. Place one foot on the lowest rung to keep the ladder in position whilst extending. 3.Start extending the telescopic ladder at the one but lowest rung and extend until the rung locks. Listen carefully if you clearly hear the click-sound. (Fig. 1.C.2) The rung is locked when the locking switches (left and right under the rung) are completely protruded. (Fig. 1.B) 4. Repeat this process on the following rungs until the ladder has the required height. 8 Pulling down a telescopic ladder. 1. Place the telescopic ladder upright on a clean and stable surface. 2. Place one foot on the lowest rung to keep the ladder in position. 3. When retracting a telescopic ladder start at the one but lowest rung. 4.Firmly keep the ladder in an upright position by placing one hand on the ladder stile, preferably 2 rungs higher up. (Fig. 1.H) 5.Use your thumb to push the right-hand locking tab to the left, which exposes the open lock. Now push the left-hand locking tab to the right, exposing the open lock. 6.The following rungs will automatically move downwards, putting the ladder back into its basic position. Make sure your fingers do not get caught between the moving parts or the rungs. 7.At all times prevent a situation where you have a half step, which may occur if you retract rungs at a higher position (this is technically impossible). 8. Never retract the telescopic ladder by manually pressing the locking buttons under the rungs, left and right. (Fig. 1.G) 9. Never unlock the telescopic ladder with one or two hands on, or in between rungs (danger of crushing!). USE OF THE TELESCOPIC LADDER. Attention! If a telescopic ladder falls, immediately check if the ladder can be fully collapsed. If this is not possible, do not use the ladder! Deformities may lead to breakages. •Never load a telescopic ladder in excess of 120kg (= a person climbing the telescopic ladder including any load). •When carrying out work, always keep both feet on a step of the telescopic ladder. Never stand, for example, with just one foot on the telescopic ladder and the other foot resting on a window frame. Never reach or lean too far to the side when working on a telescopic ladder (max. 1 arm length). If the centre of gravity is moved from the centre of the telescopic ladder, it can become unstable and can collapse (rule of thumb: keep your belly button between the side bars of the telescopic ladder). If necessary, reposition the telescopic ladder more frequently. • Do not use a telescopic ladder to access other (higher) levels. •Never climb a telescopic ladder any higher than the red sticker or never higher than the 5th step from the top (=maximum safety height). • Telescopic ladders may only be used for light work and for short periods of time. • If there is an unavoidable risk of direct contact with electricity, do not use this telescopic ladder! •Do not use a telescopic ladder outdoors in high winds (wind force 5 or 6) or other unfavourable weather conditions. •Never leave a telescopic ladder unsupervised that has already been set up for use. Think about (playing) children. •When possible, close windows and doors (not emergency exits) in the immediate vicinity of the work. •Climb the telescopic ladder when you have at least one hand free. When ascending/descending the telescopic ladder, hold on properly. This should always have to be done while facing the telescopic ladder. Holding a step with at least one hand provides increased security should you slip or miss your footing. • Do not use a telescopic ladder as bridge (part). •Wear sensible footwear to avoid slipping and/or painful knocks (no slippers, high-heeled shoes or clogs). •Do not stand on a telescopic ladder for long periods without taking regular breaks. Tiredness is a risk! •The telescopic ladder in ladder position should project by at least 1 meter above the required standing or step-over height. (Fig. 2.D) • Any tools that are used while standing on a telescopic ladder have to be light and easy to use. •Avoid any work that could cause sideways pressure on the telescopic ladder, such as drilling into hard stone. This can cause the telescopic ladder to tip over. 9 •While working, hold onto the telescopic ladder (in ladder and steps position) with at least one hand, or take precautions if it is not possible to hold on. • No more than one person should stand on a telescopic ladder. (Fig. 2H) • Never reposition the telescopic ladder while somebody is standing on it. ADDITIONAL SAFETY TIPS WHEN USING THE TELESCOPIC LADDERS. •The fact that the telescopic ladder is equipped with automatic locking parts means that it is important to keep these components clean in order for the equipment to function properly. It is also important, with collapsible ladders, that dirt does not build up between the sliding parts. It is, therefore, important to keep these ladders clean, dry and free from dirt. •Never wear baggy clothing or jewellery. These could become caught when ascending or descending the telescopic ladder which could lead to a fall. •Frequently check that the feet of the ladder are not worn. Worn feet may damage the support surface, or can result in the telescopic ladder slipping. •Do not leave any tools or other equipment at the bottom of the telescopic ladder which you might trip over. MAINTENANCE Maintain your telescopic ladder properly by keeping it free from contamination by substances such as paint, mud, sand, dirt, snow and oil. Clean the sliding parts frequently to ensure that these work properly. WARRANTY CONDITIONS This O’DADDY product has been designed, manufactured and tested with the greatest care.
