Blanche Selden presented and the body passed a motion dealing with the stories
appearing in the Defender and elsewhere that the two Police officers responsible
f9 the Joseph Smith frame-up might be reinstated in Woodlawn. The motion was
that the NAACP send a letter to the Police Commissioner and others demanding that
these officers be permanently removed from Woodlawn and warning against any
return; and also that the NAACP take ay farther action deeed advisable,

-. Faith Rich presented a motion and a letter, whose substance she read to
be sent to the two labor members of the Board of Eduhation on the segregated
of the two vocational schools and bringing to their attention various

allegations regarding the methods by which the schools are maintained as
segregated schools (one white and one Negro). The motion passed, and the Chair
stated that the letter would be forwarded to the present Housing Chairman for
any rewording, and then sent outi
6, The Chairman agreed with an Ehglewood member on the necessity of having
NAACP involvement in Engelood urban renewal hearings and promised to notify
the chairmen of the Housing Comdttee (neither was there) to send a representa-
tive to these hearings, etc.
7. Motion presented by A. Miles Ctrtaan and passed that the NAACP board initiate
a comamnity-wide Housing Confetence to be held prior to the sinmer of 1959 ih
view of the alarming developments in the housing field.

March membership meeting on the Urban Re ewal hearings which he had previously

troubles in Englewood,
Announcements and Reports,
Work on segregation in the Police Department by ,a subcommittee of the Legal
Redress Committeo was reported on. An institute is being organized, it was
reported. to aid in promotion policies.
The existence of a Speakers Bureau and its activities was reported on. It
hoped to send and provide speakers on request to pre sent the official views
