Message from the Principal
It’s hard to believe that spring is right around the corner! It IS, I hope, even with the fresh snow fall.
February was packed with fun events, and March is looking to be the same with the support of our
amazing parent community!
I’m very excited to announce that we will soon be using our new School Messenger system which will
be launched this month, in our school, supported by Grande Yellowhead Public School Division. This
implementation is another method in ensuring that you are all informed and up to date with things
that are happening in our school weekly. This system allows us to either email or call all of you at once
to highlight events that are taking place, as long as we have your up-to-date contact information. We
pride ourselves in having an incredibly supportive parent community and in that, know that your
patience in this transition is greatly appreciated. With our PAC Facebook and Evansview website pages
moving forward, we hope that you will all feel informed at all times. Stay tuned as we improve our
home-school communications! Your positive feedback and suggestions are always welcome.
In January, Accountability Pillar Surveys were mailed to all parents of grade 4, 5 & 6 students. This
survey allows parents to have input in the direction of our school and our school division. Thank you to
all parents who have completed the survey, as your opinions are highly valued. The survey has been
extended until March 30th.
Another exciting event coming up is our full day open house for Kindergarten on April 18th!

Our Focus: What’s BEST for KIDS!
A Word or Several About “The Ball”…
So…The Grouch’s Ball. It happens every year in April, everyone talks about it…I know you’ve
heard of it. But…what is it?? I mean, really, what IS it? Where did it come from? Who started it?
What’s it’s purpose? Well, let me take you back…picture it: Evansburg, Alberta, 2005…the
thriving village with clean air, fresh water, friendly people…a population of 879 people, 29 dogs,
41 cats, and 1 Grouch. Wait a minute, that can’t be right, in 12 years we’ve lost 84 people, but
managed to keep the 29 dogs, and 41 cats? Someone better update that sign….
…anyway, where was I, oh yes. The Grouch’s Ball!!
So in this thriving village there lived a woman who was filled with vision!
With one of two children remaining in Evansview School, she recognized a need for “more” for
the students; more experiences, more activities, more field trips, and more fun; all of which
required more MONEY! All she needed was an idea that would appeal to the people of
Evansburg and surrounding communities, and offer them an opportunity to help enhance the
children’s school experience. But she knew it had to be something big, and grand, and fancy,
and just unconventional enough to get people out of their houses and comfort zones, and into
some fancy shoes, and the giving mood. Well, that woman was Maxine Lappe…
The Grouch’s Ball!
…and that golden idea was
The Ball began as a licensed, formal, adult event that brought people out in their finest of
appearances. It offered live entertainment, a delicious dinner, a live and silent auction, and
hours of dancing, visiting, laughs, and fun. Several years there were even special guests in
attendance, such as members of the Edmonton Eskimos, who were delighted to help raise
money for the children.
Through the years, it has become less formal, and instead has offered varying themes such as
“The 80’s”, “Jungle”, and this year’s choice, “Backyard BBQ”. It still boasts a live and silent
auction that bring the majority of the funds in, the food and entertainment never disappoint, the
dancing, visiting, laughs, and fun continue, and the fundamental reason for its inception
remains; our children!
For the last 12 years, the Evansview Parent Advisory Association (PAC), has utilized the
thousands of dollars raised by The Grouch’s Ball to help give the staff and students of
Evansview School “more”. The funds have helped pay for things such as a shed for storing Phys
Ed equipment, security cameras for the school, children’s entertainment at PV Daze, Hot Lunch
Program, Gotcha prizes, school planners, swimming, book fair purchases, AMA Crossing Guard
Training, Grade 6 Outdoor Education, and AMA & Peacekeepers Year End Trips. In addition,
the funds raised have always guaranteed that each class will get at least one FREE field trip per
year; something that NO OTHER SCHOOL in our division offers!
The Grouch’s Ball has consistently been Evansview School’s major fundraiser. Clearly its
success is a direct result of the immeasurable efforts of countless volunteers, including PAC,
parents, families, and friends, along with the unbelievably generous donations of local, and not
so local businesses and families. It has always been a great time, and I’m quite sure this year’s
will be no different.
So, clear your calendars, throw on your shorts / sundresses, and sandals, and join us on
Saturday, April 29th, 2017, at the Evansburg Legion for the biggest “Backyard BBQ” of
the year; the 13th Annual Grouch’s Ball!
Because after all, it takes a village…
…some dogs, a few cats, and of course, a Grouch!!!

PAC News:
Hello Everyone. Thank you to all who came out for our last meeting. It’s great seeing new faces each
time.
Just a few quick updates from last month’s meeting.
Terri-Jean from the BEST program was in and spoke with us in regards to their programs. They take
a self-regulation approach and work with students in the school to teach coping strategies and
problem solving in the face of conflict and anxiety. Terri-Jean will be in the school once a week to
work with students after meeting with staff to devise a support plan. The program also offers
workshops for parents. Please speak with Mrs. Zadderey on more regarding this support for our
children.
The winter carnival that was held earlier in the month was a great success. Thank you to all parents
who came and volunteered their time for this event. Great seeing many dads out there too!!!! PAC
was able to provide Hot Chocolate for this event and it was a day enjoyed by all.
On February 22, the school took part in Pink Shirt Day. Pink pancakes were offered to the children
in the morning and we had an RCMP presentation in the afternoon. The day was focused around
positivity and how to be kind to one another and avoid negative and bullying behavior. Each child
received a pink t-shirt to wear that day, and it was decided that we will try to have a Pink Friday once
a month to support this cause.
April 10, PAC will be hosting an in-school activity. Steve Harmer will be conducting a
presentation at 1:00 in the school gym. The presentation is called “Brilliance and Resilience”
and will be focused on working together, problem solving and being kind to one another in the face
of conflict among peers. Throughout his presentation, Steve will also be incorporating magic to
inspire the students. Everyone is welcome to take part in this presentation.

Hot Lunch forms have gone home for another month. Both students and parents are
the
weekly lunch and we hope to continue to the end of the school year. We would like to take this time
remind everyone of a few details: EXACT CHANGE ONLY PLEASE. This makes things much
easier for us as we sort through all the orders. PLEASE PUT PAYMENT INTO ENVELOPE
PROVIDED. This eliminates loose change floating around. And finally, ONE FORM PER
CHILD!!!! As we sort all the orders by grade, it is much more difficult if we have a whole family on
one form. Once again, if you are able to help at all, please contact PAC or Mrs. Zadderey. Any and
all help is appreciated to make this program a success. We understand that some people may not
we are always
looking for donations of plastic cutlery, paper plates and
cups. These are supplies that we use each month. If you would like to make a donation, please
have the time to volunteer, however if you would still like to contribute,
drop any supplies off at the school office. Breakfast Club will run on March 17 with green pancakes
and sausages. All in the community are welcome to come and enjoy this free breakfast.
Planning is well underway for the Grouch’s ball and the committee is busy preparing for our Annual
Fundraiser. As this is the time where they start to get busy, more details will follow.
The next PAC meeting will be held on March 13 @ 6:30pm. Topics discussed will include:
swimming, hot lunch and field trips to name a few. We look forward to seeing you there!
March is Nutrition Month!
healthyeatingstartshere.ca
Did you know that March is Nutrition Month? Let’s take the 100 Meal Journey during the month of March. Think about it:
You’ll eat almost 100 meals this month. Make a small change and stick with it over the next 100 meals.
Here are some ideas:
1) Pledge to make a small, nourishing change and stick with it, one meal at a time:
 Fill half your plate with vegetables
 Choose whole grains instead of white bread
 Serve smaller portions
 Enjoy fruit for snack or dessert instead of sweet or salty treats
 Drink water instead of sugary beverages, like pop
1) Get pantry ready! Making meals and snacks nourishing is easier when you have healthy foods on hands. Get your
kitchen ready with these easy to grab foods:
 Vegetables and fruits: fresh or plain frozen, dried and canned
 Whole grains: oats, barley, quinoa, pasta, cereals, crackers, breads
 Milk products: milk, cheese, yoghurt
 Meats & alternatives: fresh cuts of red meat, eggs, nuts, seeds and nut butters
2) Change your eating environment by adding healthy cues:
 Put a bowl of fresh fruit on the kitchen counter
 Keep a reusable water bottle on your desk so it’s ready for to drink instead of sugary drinks
 Store nourishing snacks, like cut up veggies, nuts and seeds, or whole grain crackers in your work desk.
Evansview Snippits!
Our report cards will be issued on Friday, March 10th. We are very pleased
with your children’s effort and know you will celebrate their success with
them. We hope you will take the opportunity to read through your child’s
report card, review with them the wonderful things they are learning and how
much you value them and the wonderful lifelong learner they are becoming.
Working together with you and your children for the remainder of the year is
something we look forward to! Thank you for the opportunity!
We are hoping to have an Evansview Talent Show on
June 1st. The sign-up sheet will be up in the office after
Spring Break (the first week of April). Auditions will
take place the second week of April. If your child
would like to perform and doesn’t sing or dance, there
are many other acts they can do! The majority of the audience is
under 10 years old so they could recite a favorite nursery rhyme or an
interesting poem, get a group of friends together to act out a skit, or tell some jokes.
Have your children and their friends practice during Spring Break, if possible.
Remember the act must be appropriate for an elementary school audience.
“SPRING FORWARD”
Before you go to bed on March 12th, remember to spring your clocks forward one hour to take
advantage of the daylight and to conserve energy.
Baseball and Soccer – Please note that
Soccer and Baseball forms will be sent home
shortly with students, these can also be
picked up just outside the office door. Come
out and support your local volunteers in
sporting events provided for your children.

Grade 4/5’s are busy finishing up their light and shadows unit in science and will be
engaged in a 3V with Royal Tyrell Museum for Social. Students are also reading to solve
the mystery in the novel Murder on the Canadian. Grade 4/5’s will also be visiting
Pembina Village again later in the month.

The majority vote went to Brock. He is
now the class president, and Nakota
came in a close second, she is our vice
president. Congratulations!

School Board Presentation
Many volunteer students represented our school by presenting their views on the great things
about Evansview School to our School Board on March 1st via 3V.
Student learning in classrooms,
their amazing teachers, minibasketball, students having
‘voice’ on decisions in our
school, growing new plants
around the school,
improving mindsets, and
the brighter hallways
were among some of the
topics students chose to
mention. Here are the
students who stepped forward
to represent our student population.
Thank you, students!

Evansview’s Incredible Kindergarten:
Have you noticed the
green thumbs growing
in kindergarten?
After convincing Mrs. McKinnon to buy a bunch of different seeds, the kindergarteners were elbow deep in dirt
creating two new garden spaces. The students couldn’t believe all the plants that popped up after the Family
Day weekend. Digging in the soil is our favourite thing to do, but we found that this kills plants. Now, our
gardening chores include spritzing our plants and looking for bugs and spiders as we await the fruits of our
labor. Come check out what we decided to plant.
Wanted!!
Do you have any flower pots gathering dust at your house?
Maybe you have old seeds or left over potting soil you are willing
to part with. The kindergarten class would love to use these items
to beautify our school. Could you help us?
There’s a catch!
The Kindergarten students have a problem. They want a fish but Mrs.
McKinnon just can’t bring herself to get one. Who can help the
kindergarten students negotiate with Mrs. McKinnon? Bring your best
arguments to lure Mrs. McKinnon into bringing a fish to school! Watch for
Mrs. McKinnon’s new on line blog, mid – month where you can find
information on student learning
and our ‘fish’ conversation…

Powerful Learning in Grade One
grade one
In
we have focusing on many forms of writing, in addition
to the mechanics of writing. January saw the students really begin to focus on
sentences and conventions. Using the Empowering Writers program as a
starting point they practiced opinion writing, and completed a
cross-
curricular project – Which Cookie do you Prefer? Chocolate Chip or
Oreo? Students had to choose a position, and explained why they made their choice. They then wrote their
positions and decorated a paper cookie. Be sure to see and read these on display in the hallway. We even
finished off our project by baking cookies! Students had a chance to put their learning to use in a real life
context by using math to measure the ingredients, by using their senses which they learned about in science,
and using their “juicy” descriptive words to describe the taste and smell.
Next up in Language Arts has been writing directions for everyday things: how to make a bed, hot to make hot
chocolate, how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, how to blow
a bubble, how to pop popcorn. We began each new project by checking
schema
for
(and we’re getting quite good at talking about schema!)
Then we visualize and verbalize each step, and create a web as a
class. Over subsequent days students sort their thinking in graphic
organizers or webs, and then write the steps using “first, next, then, last”.
Each project is followed up with the hands-on experience,
following their own steps. Throughout this process students are not only
honing and refining their writing skills, but they are building their
capacity to organize thoughts, sequence steps, and follow
multi-step directions.
Additionally they are able to connect
their learning to real-life experiences.
Students had the opportunity to
give back to the school by making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches
that were then put in the freezer for other students who have forgotten their
lunch. We also used this as a great opportunity to discuss and practice
good hand washing and food safety! This writing project will soon transition into comparing and
contrasting sequential writing to recipes. Students will have the
opportunity to choose their favorite food made by a family member. They will then write the
ingredients and the steps for how they think it is prepared. I will ask their families to send in the
actual recipe and we will create a visual with the two recipes side-by-side. The entire
project will culminate with reading Stone Soup, and making stone soup as a class.
*March will be another busy month for grade one. On the 9th we will be taking a field trip to
Tipple Park Museum, where we will be learning about bird life cycles, characteristics and
adaptations. We’ll also be making bird houses to take home.

Our Amazing Playschool:
Playschool has sure been hard at work in this New
Year! We are all doing so well with recognizing and
writing our names, learning our letters and sounds,
and so much more. This month we wanted to tell you
about our reading buddies! This is one of our favorite times
of the week! Some of the grade 4/5 students come to read
with us every Thursday. We really enjoy the one on one time
and getting to know the older kids. We also love that the 4/5
students have learned our names and especially love it
when they say hello to us in the hallway and give us
high fives! Here are a few pictures of us with our
buddies…
