Rain plays spoil sport,
SRH-RCB match called off
BENGALURU: The IPL
match between Sunrisers
Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Bangalore was on
Tuesday called off without
a ball being bowled as incessant rain made the
ground unplayable.
Both the sides got one
point each from the abandoned match at the Chinnaswamy Stadium.
Heavy rain lashed the city
in the evening but stopped
an hour before the start of
the match. It seemed for a
while that the match would
go ahead as scheduled and
RCB players have even
started warming up on the
ground.
But, it began drizzling
just before the scheduled
toss time and it continued
non-stop. Later, rain intensified and forced the abandonment of the match. There
was no toss at all.
Puddles of water were
seen at several areas of the
ground and frenetic efforts
of the groundstaff went in
vain as rain finally played
the spoilsport.
Though the cut-off time
for a five-over shootout
match was 11.26pm, the umpires called off the match at
around 11pm.
With the one point from
the abandoned match, RCB
jumped to sixth spot with
five points from eight
matches while SRH re-
mained at third position with
nine points from eight
games.
SRH had won the firstleg match between the two
sides, the tournament's inaugural match, by 35 runs
in Hyderabad.
RCB, under India captain
Virat Kohli, were looking to
come out of the embarrassing batting debacle when
they were all out for just 49
in their match against
Kolkata Knight Riders at the
Eden Gardens on Sunday
but they will have to wait
longer to do so.
SRH, on the other hand,
would have wanted to notch
up their first away win this
season. They have lost all
their three matches away
from home earlier. (PTI)
fore Monday and his form
also augurs well for the
Steve Smith-led franchise.
Off-colour former skipper
Mahendra Singh Dhoni too
roared back to form with a
sparkling 61 not out against
Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Smith and Ajinkya Rahane have also contributed
from time to time and Manoj
Tiwary has also played a few
useful cameos.
Coming to the bowlers,
South African spinner Imran
Tahir has taken 10 wickets
to emerge as the best
bowler for Pune. Stokes and
Unadkat have snapped up
six and five wickets respectively.
KKR, on the other hand,
are still basking in the glory
of their resounding 82-run
win over Royal Challengers
Bangalore (RCB) at the
Eden Gardens on Sunday.
Their bowlers produced
a fantastic show to bundle
out RCB for 49 runs -- the
lowest score in IPL history.
Chris Woakes has taken
10 wickets in the seven
matches he has played,
while fellow pacer Nathan
Coulter-Nile has scalped
eight after featuring in only
three games for Kolkata.
Fast bowler Umesh Yadav too has seven wickets
from five outings.
The twice IPL champions have been pretty consistent this season and are
placed second in the points
table with two losses and
five wins in seven matches.

Resurgent Pune have task cut out

PUNE: On a roll after three
back-to-back wins, the resurgent Rising Pune Supergiant will have their task cut
out when they take on highflying Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in an Indian Premier League (IPL) encounter here on Wednesday.
After languishing in the
bottom-half of the table initially, Pune chalked up up
three successive wins to
grab the fourth place.
On Monday, Pune registered a three-run victory
over Mumbai Indians in a
thrilling encounter, thanks
to some effective bowling
by pacers Ben Stokes and
Jaydev Unadkat at the
death.
Opener Rahul Tripathi's
gritty 45 also boosted their

Bond backs Bumrah’s inclusion
for Champions Trophy
MUMBAI: Indian Premier
League's table toppers
Mumbai Indians’ deathover specialist, Jasprit Bumrah, should get the nod in
India's ICC Champions
Trophy squad, feels the
franchise's
bowling
coach, Shane Bond.
‘I will be surprised if
he is not in it (the
squad). He will be a good
bowler in all formats. At
the moment he is a
good ODI and
T20 bowler,"
the former
New Zealand fast bowler told PTI in
an exclusive interview here
on Tuesday.
Bumrah has been the goto bowler to bowl at the
'death' for MI this season
due to the indifferent form
of Sri Lanka's sling-arm
pacer, Lasith Malinga.
The 23-year-old bowler
has taken 9 wickets in 8 IPL
games this season, the second-best for the team after
New Zealand's Mitchell McClenaghan (132).
The Ahmedabad-born cricketer
had played for India in the team's
last ODI against
England
at
Kolkata
in
January. In 11
ODIs, since his
d e b u t
against
Australia
at Sydney in January, 2016,
Bumrah has captured 22
wickets. Bond, who was
among the fastest bowlers
in his prime before injuries
cut short his international
career after just 18 Tests in
which he scalped 87 wickets, was impressed with the
current crop of Indian
bowlers.
"India have been playing
their cricket at home. (Ravichandra) Ashwin, (Ravindra) Jadeja are phenomenal
in these conditions. But it
has allowed the seam bowlers to come and make real
impact and bowl quick.
Umesh (Yadav) has developed as a bowler.
"Bhuvneshwar (Kumar)
hasn't played much and the
benefits of his rest can be
seen as his pace has come
up again. So, when India
(play) away from home, they
have got a seam bowling
attack which is going to be
a handful, given the right
conditions," said the 41year-old from Christchurch.
Bond also heaped praise
on Hardik Pandya and said
the Baroda all-rounder,
along with Bumrah, added
balance to the MI squad.

SHILLONG: Cabinet Minister and threetime Congress legislator Prestone Tynsong
has taken exception to the party, especially
its youth wing, the Meghalaya Pradesh
Youth Congress, for projecting Chief Minister Mukul Sangma as the next leader after
2018 polls.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Tynsong said it is the Congress Legislature
Party that will decide on the next leader after the Assembly polls.
He also said the State party leadership
cannot take any decision on the matter as
it was up to the AICC to project any leader
as the chief ministerial candidate.
He, however, added that as far as Meghalaya is concerned, the party never projected anyone as the chief ministerial candidate in any of the past elections.
Earlier on Monday, in a statement issued
to the media, youth Congress president Richard Marak said, "The people of Meghalaya have full faith in the Congress and the

Hopes on Sindhu, Saina in

WUHAN (CHINA): All eyes
will be on women’s singles
specialists P.V. Sindhu and
Saina Nehwal as they carry
India's hopes in the Badminton Asia Championships,
starting here at the Wuhan
Sports Center Gymnasium
on Wednesday.
While Saina has two
bronze medals from the continent's marquee event in
the 2010 and 2016 editions,
Sindhu has a bronze from the
2014 Gimcheon edition.
Dinesh Khanna is the
only Indian to have claimed
a gold medal in the Asia
Championships, when he
finished top in the men's singles category in the 1965
edition in Lucknow.
Sindhu, the 2016 Olympic
silver medallist, is currently
ranked third in the world.
The double World Championship bronze medallist
has continued her good per-
formance since the Rio
Games. The 21-year-old
showed that in the India
Superseries final when she
defeated Rio Games champion Carolina Marin. Going
by the form she is in mentally and physically, this
could be her best chance to
add another trophy to her
ever-increasing CV.
The fourth seeded Indian
will open her campaign
against unseeded Indonesian Dinar Dyah Ayustine.
Sindhu's veteran Hyderabad citymate Saina will
face a test of character and
fitness as she will be eager
to prove that she has overcome her stiffness after the
knee surgery in August.
World No.8 Saina will
hope for a good start when
she takes on Sayaka Sato of
Japan.
Seventh seed Saina has
a 6-1 record in career meetings against the unseeded
Japanese and the Indian
should not have any problem in advancing.
In the men's singles, Ajay
Jayaram and H.S. Prannoy
will be India's flag-bearers.
While the world No.13 faces
a tough task in the form of
Chinese fifth seed Tian
Houwei in the opening
round, No.29 Prannoy will
come up against Hong Kong
eighth seed NG Ka Long
Angus.
The Indian men's doubles pair of Manu Attri and

Speaking to reporters,
KHNAM working president Adelbert Nongrum, after meeting Syiem on Tuesday, said, "The CEM has as-

As per Rule 128, non-tribals above the age of 18

I have faced a lot of racial abuse in mainland
India, recalls Mizoram CM Lal Thanhawla
NEW DELHI: Lashing out
racial abuse faced by northeastern people in major Indian cities, Mizoram Chief
Minister Lal Thanhawla
says he himself was a victim of such slurs in various
corners of the country.
"Racial abuse is the
worst thing in this country.
I have faced it myself a lot
of times. These are foolish
people who do not know
their own country," the 74year-old chief minister told
IANS in an interview.
"In a reception some 2025 years ago, one gentleman
Mukul Sangma will continue as the chief
minister."
Marak was reacting to the comments of
Assam Minister and BJP leader Himanta
Biswa Sarma who had said there was least
development in Meghalaya during the tenure of Sangma as the chief minister.
Later, in a statement issued on Sunday,
MPCC president D.D Lapang also stood by
the chief minister and praised his style of
governance by stating that under his leadership, a lot of initiatives were carried out.
Party cautious on non-Cong govt
Asked whether the Congress will face
the same problem of not being able to form
the government even if it emerges as the
single largest entity like Goa and Manipur,
Tynsong said the party is cautious on the
matter. "In this context, we will try hard to
cross the magic number to form the government on our own," Tynsong said.
To a question whether he will accept the
proposal if BJP or any other party projects
him as the chief ministerial candidate, Tynsong said his objective is to win the election and that other things do not arise.
said to me 'You don't look
like an Indian' to which I replied?: 'Tell me in one sentence what does an Indian
look like?' "
The five-time chief minister said it is not only the
common people but politicians at the national level —
cutting across party lines —
who do not have a basic
idea of India.
"Even the national leadership, be it the BJP or the
Congress or any other political party, if you do not
know your own country,
how can you be a leader?"
Lal Thanhawla
"Many of these national
leaders do not know about
their own country, which is
very, very foolish. It speaks
about the lack of education
and patriotism. It also
speaks about their feeling of
having a superior mentality," he added.
The Congress veteran
further said such abuses and
step-motherly treatment towards the people of a particular region gives birth to
regionalism and secessionism.
"They don't even know
that India is populated by
at least three major races of
the world. Recently someone from Madhya Pradesh
said the Dravidians (South
Indian) people are very
black, they don't realise that
Northern India is populated
