Viking Air Kids Classic Golf Tournament
September 17th couldn't have been more
perfect for a golf tournament. The sun shone
warmly, there was just a hint of a breeze and
the golf course was absolutely beautiful.
From the feedback we received everyone
had a good time on the course and it was
topped off by a great dinner. The winning
golf team was playing on behalf of Viking Air
and included Stephen Dagg, Mike Black,
Lloyd Ferguson and Ron Kubek – each team
member was presented with a Fender
acoustic guitar provided by Tom Lee Music.
We were delighted to have John Morrison of
Viking Air help out with emcee duties and we
also pressed him to service on the live
auction. Thank you so much John!
While we only netted $12,000 (which is
$12,000 more than we had before!), we
actually raised $57,000 in cash and in-kind
sponsorships, golf fees, golf prizes and
auction items, and from contests and the
auctions.
All contributors are listed in the ‘We Thank
Our Donors’ section but I want to add a
special thanks to Viking Air, the Times
Colonist, Country Grocer, and Reliable
Controls for their generous support in helping
make this a successful event.
Next year we are looking at something
completely different – a family oriented day
at our camp in Metchosin – see below.

Camp Event
After the tournament a few of us got together
to discuss the event for next year. We
realize there are many charity golf tournaments - so many that you could likely attend
one every week for 4 or 5 months! We also
know that it takes a considerable chunk out
of busy work schedules, time that our supporters could all better allocate to their
business! With that in mind, we have decided
to hold an alternative event at our Metchosin
Camp in August 2010 - an event that is both
meaningful to our supporters and aligns with
Boys & Girls Clubs' values and philosophy.
We are proposing to have a fun event that
appeals to businesses and their employees –
a picnic where we would have a BBQ but
families could also bring their own picnic
Well this is one event we don't wish to tinker
with too much! It is just so much fun and so
successful that we don't need to!
One thing we are changing, however, is the
date. This year it will be held on Saturday,

lunches. Activities could include sack races,
pie eating contests, a dunk tank, a boat
derby, model airplane contests, utilizing our
climbing tower etc. All of these activities
could have 'sponsors' to help us cover costs
and ensure there was no cost to families
attending. For example, the 'AON Dunk
Tank', the 'Investors Group Boat Race', the
'Thrifty Foods Hot Dog Stand', and the
'Viking Air Model Airplane contest'.
The inaugural event will be part of our 50th
anniversary celebrations so if you are interested please let us know soon. Contact Kate
Mansell ([email protected]). We look
forward to welcoming all of our golf sponsors
back to this event. If you have an idea for
this event please share it with us!
May 8th, 2010 at the Crystal Garden. You
will be hearing more about this in the
months to come but put it in your calendar –
we want to see you again!

her at [email protected] for info.

50th Anniversary Events
2010 marks our 50th anniversary and
we have already had two Committee
meetings that have brought forth a
wealth of great ideas about how we
will commemorate it. It was great to
see some former staff (Gary Pemberton, Amy Woodruffe and Kathy
Stinson) as well as Board members
(Bob Harman, Bill Snowdon, Todd
Walsh and Terry Spence) and funder,
Vivian Chenard from Thrifty Foods.
The main objectives of the celebrations will be to recognize the extended
Boys & Girls Club 'family', including
past and present board members,
donors, participants, staff, volunteers,
and partner organizations; to raise our
profile in the community; engage civic
politicians and other community members; and to raise funds. We aim to
build on our legacy of the past 50
years and set the stage for the next 50
years.
Some of the ideas that may form our
year of celebration are:

Sustainability - Our Capacity to Endure
'Sustainability' is a buzz word in
current discourse. We hear about
companies incorporating it, environmentalists demanding it and communities needing it. One definition of
sustainability is 'the capacity to
endure'. This is not a new dimension
for many charities, who are constantly
striving for this capacity while surviving
on annually negotiated contracts,
short-term grants and unpredictable
donations.
In another sense, charities are
amongst the strongest advocates for
sustainability in their communities.
While social service agencies and
non-profits aim to positively shape
current society, their focus is essentially on the future. They invest funds,
services and assets into the community that will build strength and
resilience for years to come. As a
social serving agency, a commitment
to our own 'capacity to endure' will
have the ripple effect of developing
social sustainability. We have a 50
year history in Victoria – our resilience
is undoubtedly strong. However, there
are always unforeseen bumps on the
road ahead. That is why we are
constantly searching for, and discovering, new ways to become more
sustainable.
Social enterprise offers one means to
attain a degree of financial sustainability. At our Metchosin Camp we are
developing an agricultural garden.
This not only creates an experiential
learning and therapy tool for programs, but also gives us an asset (the
garden produce) that will 'feed' our
programs, both physically and financially, as we will sell excess produce at
local farmers markets.
Although an exciting venture for Boys
& Girls Clubs, this social enterprise
model is not suitable for our entire
family of services. While running
programs economically and responsibly is paramount for us, external
funding will always be required for free
or low cost programming. First we
need to be aware of the changing
needs of our community (our recent
research helped us greatly in gaining
insight). Then we need to be proactive
in seeking sustainable funding.
Sustainable funds should allow us to
continue to provide essential programs, adapt to changing needs and
sail over any bumps in the road along
the way.
One goal for us is to achieve long-term
commitments from community individuals and businesses to 'give where
they live'. We have just recruited
'Community Club Champions' for our
Harbourside and Central Saanich
Clubs and still searching for champions for the City Central and Millstream
Clubs to spearhead this project,
leveraging support and educating the
community about what we do.
A further means towards sustainability
is through the power of collective
partnerships. The feasibility study with
Big Brothers, Big Sisters has resulted
in some efficiencies in accounting (see
page 5 for more details). We will
remain receptive to similar partnerships that will help us move forward in
our mission.
Collaboration happens in many ways our commitment to expanding the
volunteer program across the agency
is an additional way to increase
sustainability and community involvement.
Our ultimate goal is to significantly
increase our endowment funds,
especially 'Our Children – Our Future
Fund', to become the primary source
of funding for many of our programs.
Endowment funds ensure that important programs have a continuous and
secure source of funding because only
the interest earned on the capital is
spent, while the base amount remains
intact. Building the fund to the point
where it is producing sufficient income
to assure that Boys & Girls Clubs
continue to offer the type of preventative programming that is crucial to the
development of healthy children and
youth, and ultimately a healthy
community, is a daunting task. But it is
an essential step on our path to
sustainability.
Legacy Gifts
Boys & Girls Clubs have the well-being
of children and youth at the heart of all
they do. We know they deserve all the
support we can give them but we also
know we cannot do it alone. Everyone
should be involved in giving kids all of
the opportunities, experiences and
internal capacities they need to grow
up healthy, happy and productive
members of our society. Those
supports come in a myriad of ways –
through involvement in sports or
music, by inspiring curiosity, in providing surmountable challenges and a
sense of adventure, by encouraging
good nutrition, and through mentorship
and education.
Of course, not all of us can be involved
in such direct ways. Although we
certainly encourage people to volunteer in youth serving organizations and
associations, this is not always
possible. But there are other ways of
providing those supports. We can
support those organizations, like Boys
& Girls Clubs, through financial gifts.
And just as there are many ways to get
involved directly, there are many ways
to make a gift.
Leaving a financial legacy or planned
gift is a way to create sustainable
financial support for a charitable
organization. It is a means of making a
gift that maximizes the tax and estate
planning benefits to the donor. It is
also a reflective process that takes
time, careful thought and above all,
provides meaningful outcomes.
Legacy giving can usually be established without affecting current
financial circumstances and often
involves the use of financial or legal
instruments such as wills, life insurance policies, endowments and trusts.
They may also include immediate gifts
of cash, property, listed securities and
other types of assets.
During this holiday season, please
give thought to how you might leave a
legacy for the children in our community. You will be contributing to their
healthy development and a healthy
community!

Changes to the Board of Directors
This year we have had to sadly say
goodbye to a few Board members who
chose to step down for a variety of
reasons. One of our longest serving
members, Bob Peterson, stepped
down from the Board at this year's
AGM. We thank him for his tremendous contribution and are happy to
know he will be involved with us for a
little while longer on the 50th
Anniversary Steering Committee. Also
resigning from the board this year
were Chris Saunders (Foundation),
Tamara Saunders, Barbara
McLintock, Kim McLean and Jason
Walker. We are very grateful to them
all for their input and support in
governing this agency.

years experience as the Publisher of
two national magazines. Violaine has
a Master of Science degree from
Harvard University, as well as many
years of dedicated community service
with organizations such as 4H and the
Pony Club of Metchosin.
r
We are happy to report that several
new Board members have been
appointed to fill some of those vacancies. Below is a brief introduction to
our newest Directors. We welcome
them warmly to our organization and
thank them for taking on this responsibility for the good of our agency and
the wider community.
Cheryl d'Estrubé - Cheryl has a
previous history of being an RN and
community health nurse, and has been
the office manager for the family
business, d'Estrubé Photography, for
the past 20 years. Her community
involvement experience has included
Shannon Russell - Shannon has a
personal history with the Club – her
son Jonathan was a member and
youth leader. She also has extensive
experience with the provincial government, having been the assistant for
several ministers in different areas.
She currently works for MLA John
Horgan in the Juan De Fuca constitu-
Terry Spence - Terry comes to the
Board with previous board experience
with Boy Scouts of Canada, the
Victoria Crystal Meth Society and the
Maritime Museum. His 30 plus years
as a radio broadcaster and manager,
as well as a background in organizational leadership, human resource
management, fundraising and community development will all serve as
assets to the organization.
International Volunteer Day – 5 December 2009
“I applaud all volunteers from across Canada
who devote their talents, skills and resources
to helping others in their communities. Those
who choose to volunteer make a valuable
contribution to our society and enable others
to live more productive and rewarding lives.”
The Hon. Diane Finley, PC, MP
Minister of Human Resources
& Skills Development
According to data released in June
2006 from the Canada Survey on
Giving, Volunteering and Participating,
12 million Canadians, or almost half
the population of our country,
volunteer their time to charitable and
not-for-profit organizations. Their
contributions totalled almost 2 billion
hours in a year. Way to go Canada!
December 5th is International
Volunteer Day, where we celebrate
the contributions volunteers make in
communities across the world. As the
Minister states, volunteers make a
valuable contribution to our society. In
fact, volunteerism in essence captures
and promotes the spirit of society.
Volunteers donate time and energy to
benefit others, to further a cause, to
interact socially and learn from others,
and to feel that they are positively
impacting the world we live in. In
doing so they are making an ethical
and lasting investment with their time
that builds community assets.
This is why we are so proud to
incorporate volunteers into our work,
since we believe that communitybased approaches hold the greatest
potential for building the capacity of
our youth. There’s no doubt
volunteers bring riches to our agency,
and to our participants.
For example, when a
young teenager in our
community clubs
realizes that a
volunteer wants to hang out with him,
not for financial compensation, but
because he sees value and worth in
that kid, his self-worth and his respect
for the community he lives in will
increase. We certainly appreciate
those who have chosen to support
Boys & Girls Clubs through this
valuable gift of volunteering – THANK
YOU!!!
If you would like to find out more
about how to get involved, please

Coordinator at [250] 384-9133 or

Irish Poker Tournament
The Vancouver Island Irish Charity Poker
Tournament was held on Saturday November
7th at Odd Fellows Hall. In the spirit of good
old Irish hospitality, this invitational event brings
Victorians together for an evening of Texas
Hold'em with all entry fees (by donation) going
to Boys & Girls Club Services. Last year the
event raised $13,850 for our Create a Ripple
campaign. This year the substantial gift
(estimated at over $15,000) will go towards the
operating costs of our City Central Club. A
huge thank you goes out to the organizing
committee, Mike O'Brien, Jim O'Brien, Dave
O'Brien, Dave Brumby, Jake Brumby and
Brigitte Larsen.
WildPlay Victoria Opener
Boys & Girls Clubs were invited to join
WildPlay at their new Victoria location on
November 7th & 8th
to run a concession and (hopefully) raise
money too! Five members of our youth
leadership group spent many rainy hours at
WildPlay selling hot dogs and pop to the
adventurous folks trying out the new Monkido
Adventure. Afterwards they were rewarded with
a chance to monkey around in the trees
themselves! In return for being there to help
support their opening weekend WildPlay
donated $5 from every entry fee to us. We
were delighted they had a lot of guests - we
received $605 towards our Community Clubs.
What a great team!
Golfing for the Kids!
It is always special when we hear that an event
or competition has been put on with us in mind
as the beneficiaries. This past month we heard
from Four Plus Four Dining Club who held a
golf tournament for their members and donated
$440 from their silent auction to us. We are
grateful to all the auction donors - Denniston
by the Sea Bed and Breakfast, Fireside
Grill, Rosi's Bistro, Sooke Harbour House,
Saanich Parks & Recreation, Darcy's Pub,
Four Mile Pub, Miniature World,
Craigdorrach Castle and Samuel's Restaurant and of course to Angela Adamek from
Four Plus Four for making the auction a
successful fundraiser for us.
graduate from our Keystone and Torch
programs as Shannon's son (Jon Russell) did.
We also received $400 from Victoria
Insurance Brokers Association who donated
funds from the 50/50 competition at their own
golf tournament to us too! We count ourselves
very lucky to have so many great organizations
in Victoria who are active in fundraising on our
behalf.
Staff Retreat
On a wet Monday morning this November Boys
& Girls Clubs staff and board members met at
our Metchosin Camp for a half day of
discussion, planning and visioning. The theme
for the day was 'Planning for Change', which
was pertinent to us in light of our current office
relocation (our Pembroke St. office is closing
and those staff are joining the Yates St.
building), funding changes and the impending
retirement of our long serving Executive
Director, Ralph Hembruff. Facilitator Gareth
Woods got us looking at where our agency is
now and what it stands for, as well as how we
would like to see it in the future. He then
helped us consider the impact of change on
different members of our team. The result was
a positive and prepared team ready to move
forward.
Country Grocer Staff Show Their Support
For the second year running the staff at
Country Grocer have shown compassion at
Christmas and huge commitment to supporting
the children in Victoria in designating gifts to
Boys & Girls Clubs. Proceeds of $720 raised at
their Christmas dinner this year were sent our
way. They also donated the proceeds from
their golf tournament in September to us too
($182). Thanks to all the team at Country
Grocer for their continued support!
Out of the Rain
We are opening up our doors to homeless
youth again this winter as part of the collaborative 'Out of the Rain' project in Victoria. The
project consists of a coalition of community and
faith based organizations, who each provide
temporary shelter one night a week to youth
aged 15-25 during the worst weather of the
year. Boys & Girls Clubs' gym at 1240 Yates St.
is the location on Friday nights. We also
provide an evening and morning meal for those
seeking shelter. For more information on the
program, call 250-415-3856.
Music in the Park
Shannon Russell, a long-time supporter and
new board member, took time out of her
summer this year to organize a fundraising
venture for Boys & Girls Clubs – a concession
stand at the Langford Music in the Park
events. With the help of family members and
friends, the Russells managed to raise $800 for
our Youth Leadership programs. Thanks to the
them more kids will have the chance to
Memorandum of Agreement with Big Brothers/Big Sisters by Ralph Hembruff
As a by-product of our on-going Feasibility
Study to develop operational efficiencies with
our peers at Big Brothers Big Sisters, we have
entered into a pilot Memorandum of Agreement
to provide financial administrative services for
them. Basically, they have contracted with us to
provide all their accounting and financial
functions on a trial basis.
This is a win-win situation: BIGS benefits from
the expertise and existing systems in our
Accounting department and we increase hours
for our accounting staff as well as expand
opportunities for professional development for
the whole accounting team.
We are also utilizing this opportunity to more
clearly articulate the philosophy and purpose of
our original Memorandum of Understanding
which sets out the parameters for the
collaborative affiliation we are developing.
Subsequently, all existing partnerships (like the
Club Connect and In School Mentoring
programs) and any future developments will
simply become appendixes to the MOU as
components of this developing joint venture.

Thrifty Foods Breakfast Program
Showing their concern for the health and wellbeing of the Greater Victoria community once
again, Thrifty Foods have pledged their
support to the Breakfast Program at
Harbourside Community Club.
This will provide the kids attending our
morning care with their most important meal of
the day. Many kids miss out on breakfast, but
with reports of increasing instances of child
obesity and numerous health concerns
stemming from that, ensuring kids in our
programs have access to a nutritious
morning meal is a priority for us. Thrifty
Foods answered our call and have
generously provided us with $3,000 worth
of gift cards for program provisions.
Thanks Thrifty's for giving our children a
great start to the day!

E-Newsletter to be launched 2010
Even though we are turning 50 in 2010, we
believe we are never too old to adapt to new
technologies - like e-newsletters! We want to
keep you informed and involved in what is going
on at Boys & Girls Clubs, but we are also
conscious of the financial and environmental
costs of printing a paper newsletter as often as
we do now. An e-newsletter would not completely
replace this newsletter, but complement it, giving
a more interactive and economic way for us to
communicate frequently with those connected to
our organization. We still intend to produce a
printed newsletter twice a year. It will give you,
the reader, more of a choice. So before we begin
the journey into electronic media, we want your
input. It is important for us to know how you
prefer hearing from us, and what you like to hear
about. Please look over the following questions
and let us know how we can serve you best.
Your opinions are very important to us. So is your
