Long lovely summer evenings .

Long lovely summer evenings ....
Are you enjoying your garden this summer?
We love to spend long languid evenings contemplating the bounty of our toil! And why not, as
gardeners we spend hours and hours perfecting our glorious creations, so we are duty bound
to save some part of the day to simply admire.
But we cant sit on our laurels for too long, as John Grimshaw recently posted on Facebook
July is the time to cut back and fill in your borders! July is another turning point in the garden
and if you want to have wonderful borders well into Autumn then now is the time to prepare.
The vast majority of late spring and early summer-blooming perennials take a fast nosedive
after flowering, and can look fairly haggard later in the summer. Early flowering Geraniums
and pulmonarias are just two examples of plants that are notorious for looking terrible by July.
With both of these a hard shearing back will encourage a new round of fresh, healthy and
compact foliage to be produced so cut them back more or less to just above the ground after
blooming. t
This hard-pruning technique also works well with any of these: Alchemilla, Dicentra,
Euphorbia, Nepeta, Lupins, Corydalis, Aquilegia and early flowering Primulas.
Happy gardening
Jimi
Just a reminder....!

Jimi's Top 5 Plants for this month.
Thalictrum delavayi var decorum
My favourite perennial at the moment in Hunting Brook Gardens. Sprays of small hanging
pinkish/purple flowers above soft filigree foliage. Needs full sun and soil that does not get
waterlogged. A member of the buttercup family
Salvia 'Wendys Wish'
This superb new salvia, which was discovered
growing in an Australian garden in 2005. It has
rich pink flowers and flowers from early summer
till autumn. Drought tolerant once established, it
will be happiest in a warm, sheltered position
with freely draining soil.
Linaria 'Peachy'
The new tall see through perennial with spires
of peachy/apricot snapdragon type flowers and
grey/green foliage. It needs sun and dry soil to
grow well. Propagation by cuttings as this plant
is sterile I got this from Cotswold Garden
Flowers. www.cgf.net
Sanguisorba officinalis 'Martins Mulberry'
A fantastic new Sanguisorba with deep winepurple mulberry flowers on self supporting
stems. They grow best in soil that does not
dry out in full sun
Salvia 'Amistad'
One of the best new plants. Flowers all summer
with deep purple flowers and dies well! needs
full sun to preform well. Flowers from May till
first frost. This was introduced from Argentina in
2012. If you were to grow one tender plant this
would be the plant!!

Borders - define your space!
It was Gertrude Jekyll, the Edwardian garden designer who taught us how to use colour in our
borders. Geranium Anne Thompson not only softens the edges but give months and months of
colour with no trouble at all.
