Monkey Team - Whitecotes Primary School

This term’s topic is ‘Bright Lights,
Big City!’ We will be learning about
our capital city – London! We will
find out about famous landmarks,
iconic London transport, The
Royals, The Great Fire of London
and London Zoo. Your homework
this term is all related to our topic
and will culminate in ‘The London
Expo 2015’ in the final week of
term.
Your child will benefit greatly from daily
support at home with their learning –
their homework book needs to be
handed in each Monday and will be sent
home on a Tuesday.
We will share home news each week on
a Friday afternoon – home news slips
will be available for you to complete
each morning – please post them in our
class post box.
We would welcome any offers of help
to listen to the children read in the
afternoon sessions. Thank you.
Monkey Team
This term in science we will be learning about
animals and categorising them according to whether
they are carnivore, omnivore or herbivore. We will
also be looking at the changing seasons and finding
out why it gets colder in the winter. Finally, we will
learn more about materials, their properties and
their uses.
Children will have a daily mental maths session at
their level, working on basic number skills, times
tables and number bonds. We will also be working
on place value, addition and subtraction, time
(including days of the week and months of the
year), weighing and measuring, 2D and 3D shapes
and investigations using our maths skills.
We will be reading a selection of fiction and non-fiction this term. We will look at the features of fact files, letters,
instructions and recounts. We will be working on sentence structure in our writing, including capital letters, full
stops, exclamation marks and question marks. Our non-fiction texts will include information about historical and
modern day London, including the Great Fire. We will look at the features of these non-fiction texts including the
contents page and index. We will continue with our daily Phonics sessions and every child will have a guided
reading session twice a week. Spelling and handwriting will also be taught weekly.
Things to remember:
Please make sure that all children are in class by 8.55am at the latest – our door will be open from 8.45am for our
morning mission if you wish to stay and help your child for 10 minutes. Home time collection is at 3.30pm – please
let the class teacher know if someone other than you is collecting your child. Full uniform is to be worn each day
and a full PE kit is to be kept in school – NAMED PLEASE! Please check your child’s book bag every day for
important letters and any homework to be completed. Your child’s book and reading record are in the book bag –
please listen to your child read at least three times a week at home and make a record of this in their reading
record. If your child has a water bottle please ensure that their name is on it and that you take it home each day to
wash. If you have any concerns then please speak to Miss McPhie or Mrs Smith (Mon. – Thurs.) or Mrs Barratt/
Mrs Morris (Fri.). Thank you for your continued support.
