Africa is the world’s second largest continent after Asia covering about 30.2 million km² (including
adjacent islands) and has a population of approximately 1,022 million* people. Africa covers 6% of
the Earth’s total surface. The continent is surrounded by the Mediterrenean Sea to the North, the
Red Sea to the northeast, the Indian Ocean to the southeast and the Atlantic Ocean to the west.

Teachers Notes
The A3 students worksheet has 50 countries in total. 34 of the countries are marked and 16 have
been left unmarked, with blank boxes close-by to be filled in with the name of each country.
Students can first practice writing the country names in the blank boxes and then cut-out the
country names and stick them into the correct space when the exercise is marked.
Aim
Introduce and identify the different countries in the African continent.
Outcomes
The student is able to name and identify the position of African countries frequently mentioned
in the international and charity news.
Additional Learning Activity
This resource can also be used as a starter activity to lead into further discussions about the
politics, geography, religions, cultures and economics of different countries of Africa.
