El Tren is coming! Cibola Arts Council invites all artists to participate in a themed exhibit which will open October 1, 2014.
We are looking for artists to express, in any medium, the iconic image of “El Tren” across the
American Southwest. Please submit your work by mid-September. ALL ABOARD!
El Tren: The Iron Horse in New Mexico
By Rick Best
For people in the 19th century, the railroad was the harbinger of modernity, speed, and
civilization. By 1880 the legendary Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe railroad reached
Albuquerque, and over the subsequent decades, a railroad building boom saw lines cross
New Mexico in many directions.
Grants itself was born of the steam age, getting its start as a construction camp, and ending as a
division point on the Atlantic and Pacific. Nearby short lines like the Zuni Mountain Railroad
were also headquartered in town. Many young men and women went to work for the railroads
or boarded famous passenger trains to distant places and adventures.
The importance of the railroad has faded over the decades with the growth of auto and air
travel , but the romance remains. It’s still possible to thrill at the sight of the steam locomotives
thundering up the grade outside of Chama on the Cumbres and Toltec. And el tren rolls on as a
part of the future in the shape of the new RailRunner commuter train. All Aboard!

What is Ancient Dirt?
XAVIER BITSUI
“My interest in creating Anasazi style pottery began with my wanting to learn primitive and
survival skills of my Navajo homelands regions in Prewitt, Casamero Lake and Thoreau. There
in my homelands are many ancient Anasazi ruins that date back to 850 to 1250 A.D. One ruin in
particular near Thoreau was a village of master potters. There near Thoreau I taught myself the
origins of the Anasazi pottery by backtracking the ancient Anasazi trails to several clay sources
actually used by this ancient village years ago. In my mind, I could hear the Ancient Anasazi
telling me what to gather and how to process these materials. I gathered from this sacred holy
site. After several failed attempts, I made my pottery.
As of today, I no longer gather clay from this site but near Mt. Taylor on my family’s allotment.”

Beth Klotz
The Cibola Arts Council is proud to present the Artist Beth Klotz in her first
one-person show at the Coyote del Malpais Golf Course. The interview below was
great fun for both the gallery and artist.
Beth’s work is absolutely beautiful. Please stop by the Coyote to see her work.
As Beth is one of our best selling artists, don’t wait too long!
R: Tell me about yourself as an artist.
B: My inspiration was my grandfather, Edward C. Klotz, who went to the Chicago Art Institute in the
early 1900’s and became a landscape painter. He did watercolors and oils, and
I’ve always wanted to paint like him.
R: You haven’t been painting that long, though, have you?
B: I remember getting my first tin of watercolors in Kindergarten, taking the tin to my Grandpa along
with a rock, and insisting he show me how to paint on that rock. As much as I’ve always been a bit of
an “arts-and-crafts-aholic,” I just retired mid-2011, so finally have the time to focus on painting.
R: Are you self-taught then?
B: I’m the opposite of self-taught; I’m everyone-taught. My art teachers, covering many different
mediums actually, in New Mexico alone have included Joan Sheski, Tim Billy, Peggy Pitts,
Carol Casady, Michael Lewis, Dan Stouffer, Leo Neufeld, Jon Birdsong, Kandy Tate, Lynn Myers,
Jackie Reginol, Xavier Bitsui, Gayla Romska, and Bob Rohm; that’s pretty much in chronological
order. And you’ll recognize many of the names as having been associated with
the Double Six Gallery here in Grants.
Plus, I read 15 “how-to” books on painting by various artists in the past two years. I figure I better get
good at painting quickly before I forget which end of the brush to hold, seeing
as I’m already old ... well, old-ish.
R: I have seen you participating in the Gallery’s Artist-in-Residence program over the past two years.
B: I did my first oil painting at the Arts & Crafts Galore store here in Grants on First Street, and still
paint there once per month. Several of us in that group decided to work up the nerve to enter
paintings into our first gallery event here at the Double Six Gallery for that 25th Anniversary of
El Malpais National Monument and Conservation Area show in 2012. It was such a wonderful
experience, we’ve continued to participate in gallery events. It’s not only fun and inspiring for me,
but I’ve learned a great deal here.
R: What is your Artist’s Statement?
B: Huh?
R: Make an Artist’s Statement, and don’t make it too long.
B: I appreciate the beauty around me on a daily basis. Painting helps me share that experience with
others. I feel incredibly blessed to be here in this beautiful land and around the people I’ve met here.
Is that too lengthy?
R: Huh?
R: Just kidding!
B: Thank you, Robin, for the promo, and for being part of the fabulous gallery experience.
R: Thank you, Beth.

“En Plein Air”
will be displayed at the upcoming show.
