Sledding Banned At Country Club
Hits Manhasset

Postings on Facebook announced
that sledding was banned at
Plandome Country Club, then the
word spread like wildfire and news
trucks were there to report the story.
The infamous "Suicide Hill” which
kids would fly down on sleds in the
advent of a snow day is no longer a
thrill our young children will experi­
ence. Local civic leaders had pushed
to have fencing and signs warning
"No Trespassing” on Plandome
Country Club property.
Neighbors in the area have had to
deal with winter sledders flocking
to the hill for years. However, after
last year's accident, in which a Port
Washington girl hurt in a sledding
accident, seemed to be the straw
that broke the camel's back. Now the
official word is Plandome Country
Club does not permit sled riding on
its property and calls it trespassing.

Bitter cold temperatures have
created an ice palace in Manhasset,
with treacherous icicles dangling
from gutters and ponds frozen for
ice skating. Temperatures have
plummeted below zero and blustery
winds have made walking your dog a
dangerous task.
This cold snap is the aftermath o
last week's snowstorm, which caused
Manhasset schools to close early on
Tuesday and kept them closed on
Wednesday, cancelling after-school
activities and programs. The railroad
operated on a weekend schedule
during the Wednesday dig-out.

but the adventureous hills are just

State Aid Sees Slight Bump In Manhasset

New York State Gov. Andrew
Cuomo's proposed $137 billion
spending plan will increase education
aid by $807 million for the 2014-2015
school year, but school officials say it
will still put them up against the wall.
"On top of the constraints of the tax
levy cap which will be lower than 2
percent for the 2014-2015 budget, the
minimal 0.83% increase in state aid
contained in the Governor's 20142015 budget proposal continues to
be well below meeting the needs of
the Manhasset school district," said

Charles Cardillo. “Once again, the

following a budget year in which
programs were reduced and class
sizes were increased."
Based on preliminary figures, the
Manhasset School District will receive
$28,216 more than last year, or a total
of $3,421,360—an increase of 0.83
percent.
