The Flyers dance season runs from August-February. The primary goals of the program include:
- Teach dance fundamentals and skills. Techniques and choreography will primarily focus on a Pom
and Hip Hop style of dance.
- Provide a great exercise opportunity for participants, with a strong focus on flexibility, strength, and
physical conditioning.
- Learn and perfect a choreographed team dance routine. Length and degree of difficult will increase
as teams move up in age and skill level. Older Flyers teams will learn 1+ additional fun routine(s) to be
used at community service opportunities and special performances. All teams will also learn a routine
for the end-of-season Showcase to be held at the end of February.
- Teach the value of teamwork, unity, hard work, and respect for self, coaches, and teammates.
Flyers Teams: Each team will have 8-18 dancers, with 1-2 coaches per team.
Depending on the number of girls in each age group, teams could be divided into 2 groups based on age,
grade, maturity, and experience. Placement of girls on teams is the coaches’ discretion and final decision.
Tiny Flyers –
- Grades K/1st.
- Tiny teams will practice once a week for 45 minutes. These practices will be held on Monday, Tuesday, or
Wednesday late afternoon/early evening.
- Tiny teams will perform 2-3 times locally and at the end of season showcase.
Mini Flyers –
- Geared toward girls in 2nd-4th grade.
-Mini team members cannot turn 10 before August 31, 2016.
- Mini teams will practice once a week on Sundays for 1 hour 15 minutes. Starting in September, Minis will
add an additional 1 hour practice on a week night.
- Mini teams will perform 3-4 times locally and at the end of season showcase. The Mini teams will most likely
also attend 1-2 competitions.
Youth Flyers –
- Geared toward girls in 4th-7th grade.
-Youth team members cannot turn 13 before August 31, 2016.
- Youth teams will practice twice a week. These practices will take place on Sundays for 1 hour 30 minutes and
a week night practice lasting 1 hour 15 minutes.
- Youth teams will perform 4-5 times locally and at the end of season showcase. The Youth teams will most
likely also attend 2 competitions.
Junior and Senior Flyers –
*** The Jr. & Sr. Flyers are tryout teams. One-two teams will be formed based on the number of talented dancers
chosen at tryouts. Dancers that are over the age of 13 (age as of 8/31/16) that do not make the Jr/Sr team(s) and are
too old for the Youth team will (unfortunately) be cut. We do not enjoy this process, but it is part of a competitive program.
- A Junior team is geared toward girls in 7th-9th grade (Junior team members cannot turn 16 before 8/31/16).
- A Senior team is geared toward girls in 9th-12th grade (Senior team members cannot turn 19 before 8/31/16).
- Jr. and/or Sr. teams will practice 2-3 times a week. These practices will take place on Sundays for 2 hours &
1-2 wk. night practices lasting 1 hr. 45 minutes. An occasional early Saturday AM practice could be added.
- Jr. and/or Sr. teams will learn a competition routine and 1-2 fun performance routines.
- Jr. and/or Sr. teams will perform 5+ times locally/regionally and at the end of the season showcase. They will
most likely attend 2-3 competitions.
Important Tryout Information (Jr. and Sr. level dancers only) –
Tryouts for the Jr/Sr. team(s) are mandatory for all dancers age 13+ by 8/31/16.
Tryouts are held in the FFTK gymnasium and are closed to the public/parents. Please wear exercise/dance
attire and tennis shoes or jazz shoes. Skills and a short dance will be taught on Thursday. Girls will be placed
in groups of 3 for a tryout process on Saturday.
A list of dancers who made the Jr/Sr team(s) will be taped to the outside gym door at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday
8/13. Parents of girls who made a team will also receive an email. The 1st practice day is Sun. 8/14.
Tryouts Day 1
Tryouts Day 2
Thursday August 11th
Saturday August 13th
7:00 – 9:00 P.M. (meet upstairs)
9:30 – 11:30 A.M. (meet upstairs)
Additional Important Details/Expectations –
- Practices for the 2016-17 season will begin the week of August 14th. All 2016-17 Flyers parents will receive
an email on 8/11/16 with team placement details and a reminder about your assigned first practice day.
- All practices will be held in the FFTK gymnasium and/or upstairs dance room.
- Each dancer will receive a detailed calendar each month. This will be available for pick up at FFTK and will be
emailed to parents and posted on the Flyers Facebook page. Any cancelled practices during Holidays will be
on the calendars.
- Practices are “closed” to spectators. Young dancers have a better focus at practices, when mom/dad are not
watching. Older dancers have a better focus when outside friends/boyfriends are not watching.  Coaches
will let parents know if any practices are considered open to spectators.
- Each dancer on Tinys/Minis will be asked to have an adult serve as a “helper” during practices (on rotation)
during the season. Helpers will assist with walking girls to restroom and water breaks and will help as needed.
- All dancer are expected to arrive on time for practices, performances, and competitions. Any missed practice
should be for a justified reason such as an illness or an out of town family obligation. Any missed practice can
negatively impact the missing dancer and the entire team. Any tardiness or missed practices should be
reported to the dancers’ individual coaches before practice begins.
- Please keep this level of commitment in mind when signing your dancer up for Flyers. If you know that a
conflicting activity (sports, band, part time jobs, etc.) will be an on-going conflict with Flyers – please make a
choice between activities. Some flexibility will be considered with conflicts for other school activities. For
example – A dancer might need to arrive late to a practice from a volleyball game, but she must be willing to
rush from 1 activity to the next.
- All dancers should bring a water bottle to every practice. Water is preferred and sports drinks are acceptable
(no sodas). Do not send your dancer to practice on an empty stomach. Healthy food is fuel (energy)!
- All dancers should be dressed in comfortable exercise clothes (no denim, no skirts without leggings). Do not
send your dancer to practice in flip flops/sandals. Dancers should have tennis shoes AND socks at each
practice. Jazz shoes will be purchased in the first two months of the season and each dancer is required to
have jazz shoes and tennis shoes at each practice.
- *** NEW for this season. Each dancer needs a pair of “practice Poms.” Use an old pair of Flyers poms or ask
around to obtain a gently used pair of poms from a former dancer or cheerleader. Coaches will keep a limited
number of old poms to share, but please try to obtain a gently used pair for practice purposes. This will help
keep our new team poms in good condition so they look nice for performances/competitions.
- Families are asked to be supportive with any “take-home” assignments given to dancers. These can include
practice for choreography or practice with flexibility or conditioning exercises.
Costs –
* All Mini, Youth, and Jr/Sr dancers will pay a $35 Registration fee. This $35 is due when you submit your
registration form (due by 10:00 P.M. on August 8th). This covers your required USASF membership fee.
USASF is the national governing organization for the Spirit Industry (cheer/dance). This is very similar to youth
sports agencies like USGF, AAU, USA Swim Club, etc. Heather will handle the USASF athlete membership
process. Any Jr/Sr. dancer that does not make the team will be refunded her $35 registration fee.
If you are a NEW Flyers dancer on a Mini, Youth, or Jr/Sr team, a copy of the dancers’ birth certificate is also
required and must be attached to your Flyers registration form/fee. Girls who were on a Mini, Youth or Jr/Sr
team last year should already have a USASF membership and a birth certificate on file with the Flyers office.
Birth certificates and a $35 registration fee DO NOT need to be submitted for Tiny Flyers (K/1 st grade). Tiny
dancers simply need to submit a registration form.
* Monthly dues for the 2016-17 season are payable for 7 months (August-February):
Tiny Flyers - $30/month. Total $210 for the season.
Mini Flyers - $35/month. Total $245 for the season.
Youth Flyers - $40/month. Total $280 for the season.
Junior and/or Senior Flyers - $45/month. $315 for the season.
These monthly dues (cash or check payable to Fit For The King Flyers) are due at the first practice of each
month. Parents are welcome to pay the full season’s tuition at the start of the year. Due to the low monthly
cost of this program, a sibling discount for monthly dues is not granted.
*** NEW THIS SEASON - Any monthly dues payment that is turned in after the 15 th of any month will be an
additional $10. This policy will hold true even if a dancer has a missed practice.
A locked drop box is at the top of the stairs behind the FFTK front desk for payment drop off. We will also do
our best to have a Flyers coach or clerical staff helper at a table in front of the FFTK office at the start and end
of the first practice of each month. This table will also be used if any handouts are available for pick up or
sign-ups are needed for misc. items. Check this table at each practice for any important notices.
* Miscellaneous Expenses: (Dancers will receive a 2-week notice before any misc. expense is due. These
misc. expenses will mostly be spread out during the months of August-November).
- Dance shoes. These can range from $20-45.
- Costume. Our goal is to keep costumes for each team under $100. Our average team costume for last year’s
season was only $57. This costume is worn for multiple performances, competitions, picture day, the
Showcase, and is yours to keep at the end of the season. The Jr/Sr. team could possibly have 2 costumes to
purchase. A very basic, inexpensive matching shirt will be purchased for all dancers for the end-of-season
Showcase.
- Poms. Each dancer will provide her own “used practice Poms” and will purchase 1 pair of team Poms. These
range from $25-40.
- Music and choreography. There have been BIG CHANGES to music requirements for the cheer/dance industry
in the last 6 months. We typically have professional music produced for each team and divide this cost evenly
among all dancers. This is typically no more than $20. We are still in discussions about how our music for each
team’s routine will be produced. Plan for a small music expense and we will keep you posted. The only team
that will have a choreography expense is the Jr/Sr. team. This will be no more than $50/girl and we will work
on a team fundraiser to cover this expense.
- Competition entry fees. These can vary from $30-100+ per dancer per competition. These are typically paid
1-2 months in advance to ensure the “early-bird” discount. We will do our very best to find low-cost events.
Competition entry fees do not include travel costs. Travel accommodations are at the responsibility of families.
Competitions are usually in close proximity in cities like: Indianapolis, Dayton, Cincinnati, etc. Some
competitions charge a spectator admission fee.
- Local performances (usually basketball games) charge a $4-5 entry fee per spectator. Dancers are admitted
for free, but Flyers “fans” are expected to pay the gate admission, unless you have a season-pass for that
particular school.
A parent meeting will take place on Sunday August 28 th. The time will be announced soon. This meeting
will include discussion about fundraisers. Flyers parents typically work together to do 3 fundraisers during
our season. These are optional, but help to off-set misc. expenses (fundraising credit earned cannot be used
for monthly dues). Parent involvement and support is needed for fundraising efforts.
