Safran and Planète Sciences: a long-standing visionary partnership!
The objective of Planète Sciences is to allow young people to discover and
experience the sciences.
© Planète Sciences
We have been working to this end with Safran companies for over 20 years: our first
partnership was signed in 1994 with the Société Europénne de Propulsion (SEP), a
forerunner of Herakles…and the mission lives on! Engineers and technicians
continue to supervise middle- and high-school science clubs to help students
design all kinds of propelled objects, from model rockets to high-altitude balloons
and water rockets!
More recently, Safran also partnered with Planète Sciences and the Gifas1 for the Rocketry Challenge. French
teams regularly excel in this international model rocket launch contest for ages 12 to 18, whose national finals take
place at the Group’s aeronautics and space museum in Villaroche each year.
In 2014, Safran reiterated its support to Planète Sciences by partaking in the “Road to the Sciences” project. Group
engineers were involved in designing and implementing an aeronautics teaching module focusing on motors and
propulsion, inertial units and flight controls. Almost 1,800 children aged 8 to 18 were able to take part in these
educational workshops. Thanks to further support from Safran, Planète Sciences is working to duplicate these
modules so that our 9 delegations can benefit from these interactive tools, and implement them across France.
Safran also accompanies us in an entirely new project of creating an educational,
experimental Planète Sciences Fab Lab. It will be open to schools, science clubs,
young entrepreneurs and more generally to Essonne inhabitants wishing to
receive training in digital design and production methods. It is a dynamic program
encouraged by the Group, which founded its own Fab Lab in June 2014.
The sciences are realms of curiosity, discovery and innovation, with many associated job sectors. Our wish
is to encourage the younger generations to make inroads into these realms, both known and unknown.
Safran shares this vision for the future.

SAFRAN CORPORATE FOUNDATION FOR MUSIC
The Safran Corporate Foundation for Music Prize
has been awarded to pianist Selim Mazari
The Safran Corporate Foundation for Music Prize has been awarded to Selim Mazari, following a
competition involving six young pianists. The ceremony took place on October 13 in the Grand Salon of the
Musée de l’Armée at the Hôtel National des Invalides in Paris.
The jury of qualified individuals from the music world was
dazzled by his poetic and technical performance of “Cloches à
travers les feuilles” and “Poissons d’or”, two extracts from Claude
Debussy’s Images (Book 2). The audience also expressed their
amazement and called for several encores.
Having graduated from the Paris National Music and Dance
Academy in 2013, Selim Mazari completed his Master’s degree
under Dmitri Alexeev at the London Royal College of Music last
June. He has been awarded the ADAMI2’s Classical Music
Revelation Prize (2012), the Jury’s and Public’s Choice Award of
the Geneva Society for the Arts, and the Alain Marinaro Grand
Prize in Collioure (2014), and performs both in France and
internationally. Selim is the 7th recipient of the Safran
Corporate Foundation for Music Prize, and the 1st to be
selected from a competition.
“This prize is all the more valuable to me”, he confides. “My fellow
contestants were all excellent, and we all enjoyed listening to one
another. I am very happy and proud to receive this distinction
from the Safran Corporate Foundation for Music, which is famous
for supporting young talent. I will keep working as I have since the
age of five, when my passion for the piano was born: with diligence and enthusiasm!”

The award includes 5,000€ of prize money. Furthermore, the Musée de l’Armée, a partner to the Foundation since
2007 with 20 years of experience in promoting promising musicians, has given the laureate the opportunity to
perform as a soloist with the French Republican Guard’s String Orchestra in the Saint-Louis-des-Invalides cathedral
in Paris on Thursday 19 March 2015. Selim Mazari will be a headline act for many years to come!
Selim Mazari’s next performances:
08/15 – 08/21/2015 : International Piano and Chamber Music Week (Switzerland)
09/02 – 09/12/2015 : Graz Festival (Austria)

SAFRAN CORPORATE FOUNDATION FOR INTEGRATION
The SLL (Sète–Lorient–London) organization:
a horseback ride, and so much more…
The Safran Corporate Foundation for Integration supports
the SLL (Sète-Lorient-London) organization in arranging in
2016 a 1,800 km trek on horseback for 12 French and
English youths struggling with social integration. They will
depart from the Camargue equestrian center, arriving at the
French embassy in the center of London. The participants will
make their entire journey on horseback, while horse drawn
carts will handle logistics. The project’s 3-year planning stage
has already begun.
Discovering trades
M o re
i n f o rma t io n
According to the French
Equine-Assisted Therapy
Society, “Equine-assisted
therapy is a psychological
treatment based on the
horse’s presence as a
therapeutic mediator, which
is dispensed to an individual
on both a psychological and
physical level.”
Before their 6-month journey, the youths at the Elven Reinforced Education Center in
Morbihan, France, have begun constructing two carts. They are being exposed to trades
that will help them in joining the workforce later in their lives, such as ironwork,
electricity, carpentry, etc. One of the carts will be adapted to persons with reduced
mobility. The adolescents are also working with the team of five harnessed Breton draft horses.
Addressing disabilities through equine-assisted therapy
In addition to helping these youths to find employment, the organization’s other mission is to enable those with
disabilities to enjoy the therapeutic benefits of working with and riding horses. The travelers are completely
invested in this process, as they calmly and attentively prepare seven Camargue horses for their future riders.
For these socially displaced teenagers, taking responsibility of a
horse is also an essential mission: they renew their selfconfidence through taking charge of a living, powerful being in
a judgment-free relationship. The youths also keep the final
beneficiaries in mind, knowing that the quality of the training
they provide is critical for the horses’ future riders with reduced
mobility. Acting in the service of others is the best way to learn
solidarity.
At the end of this human and animal adventure, the horses will
be donated to French and English equestrian centers open to
children and adults with disabilities.
Professionals harnessing Canelle for the first time, after being
desensitized by the youths in preparation for the trek.
Three caravans have already departed in 2005, 2008 and 2012. Most of their beneficiaries are still in contact
with the organization, and over half of them have found employment since. Each donated horse offers, on
average, 720 hours of enjoyment per year to those who ride them. The lasting nature of this equestrian
initiative is in line with the mission statement of the Safran Corporate Foundation for Social Integration.

Safran, Talents des Cités and François Dechy
for "Baluchon - À Table Citoyens" make for a winning combination!
An original concept
A social integration enterprise
Last October Safran chose to sponsor "Baluchon –
À Table Citoyens" (“Come and eat, citizens”), a
social enterprise that prepares and distributes
meals made from fresh ingredients. François
Dechy is the founder of this business based in Cité
Marcel Cachin in Romainville, Seine-Saint-Denis.
However, "À Table Citoyens" is not
only a gastronomic business: it is also
a work integration enterprise that
employs people in difficulty. These
employees receive professional
training for careers in institutional
catering and short-distance delivery
driving. 26 positions have already
been created, and François Dechy
hopes to add eight more in the next
year.

employees: who
would not want to take home a ready-to-eat meal?
This is now a reality for the corporate clients of
"Baluchon – À Table Citoyens" in the Parisian Region.
Their employees can place their order on a
dedicated website, and their chosen meal is
delivered to their workplace and stored in a
specially installed “Baluchon” refrigerator. All they
have to do is collect their bag labeled with their
name as they leave the office, and enjoy their meal
at home.
Companies are not forgotten with Baluchon’s readymade meals and other catering offerings. This
gourmet service now extends to private individuals
thanks to newly-opened stalls providing rapid, fresh
and locally sourced lunches.

Safran is partner of Talents des Cités (Inner-City Talents), a joint initiative of the French Senate and the
Ministry of Urban Affairs. The aim of this contest is to highlight the initiatives proposed by men and women
from vulnerable areas: prizes have already been awarded to over 500 entrepreneurs, whose projects are
essential for economic development as well as job creation.
François Dechy
"This social element was a deciding factor in the creation of
my company,” says François Dechy. “It was the next logical
step in my professional career after working in solidaritybased finance. I truly believe that knowing the value of
reaching out is an asset in life. The "Baluchon" employees
are conscientious and proud of their work, and when I see
them support one another and share their newfound knowhow, I think to myself that solidarity is not an over-used
word: it gives you hope for the future!
“I too received help in the past: winning the Talents
des Cités Prize with Safran’s sponsorship has been a
real helping hand in developing "Baluchon". We
currently have 200 business clients in the Parisian
Region and on average we deliver 300 dinners and
meal platters daily. Our first year’s balance sheet is
positive. I hope it lasts! In any case, the entire team is
working towards that goal."
This initiative promoting social integration and job creation is of particular significance to Safran as a
signatory of the Charte Entreprises & Quartiers (Companies and Neighborhoods Charter) agreement with
the Ministry of Urban Affairs on 12 December 2013.

Safran partners with the Alliance française in Rybinsk
Safran has been a driving force behind the creation of the Alliance française of
Rybinsk. Its President, Georgiy Konyukhov, also oversees the manufacturing of the
SaM146 engine which is jointly produced by Snecma (Safran) and NPO Saturn
(aeronautics engine manufacturer and major partner of the Group in Russia). He
answers our questions.
© Alexey Lenev
There were already 11 Alliances françaises in Russia, why did you wish to create the
12th in Rybinsk?
The city of Rybinsk has 206,000 inhabitants and is an important industrial center. Many
French families live and work there and the population includes a significant number of
NPO Saturn employees. Cultural and technical exchanges have grown thanks to the
SaM146 program, which created interest within the Alliance française de Paris Fund
Board of Directors to found an institute in the area. The mayor of Rybinsk approved this
project and provided a 120m² reception center, which was quickly named "The House of
Friendship" by the visitors.
One might imagine that the Alliance is particularly active in the cultural
domain?
Yes, of course. Among other things, we organize the French contemporary
cinema Festival under the auspices of the French Embassy in Russia. We put
on exhibitions of paintings and photographs by French artists. However, our
mission is much broader than that.
Could you tell us more?
We are very active in the educational sector. For example, we set up
©Pavel Smirnov
exchange programs between French and Russian schools and universities.
Every month the Alliance organizes educational entertainment for the Francophone and Francophile pupils in Rybinsk
(workshops on comic book writing, linguistic contests, French culture themed games and poetry evenings to name a
few). Culture and education both contribute to equality of opportunity, and as such we wish to thank Safran for
supporting the creation of our library.
You also seem very attached to the French language.
The Alliance indeed works to promote the French language. We aim to have French spoken in the schools in Rybinsk.
One of them already became a special partner of the French Embassy in Russia in 2014. The Alliance organizes language
classes for all levels and ages. The youngest student began at the age of just 6 months, in mother-and-child French
lessons, whereas the oldest is 75 years old and follows lessons at intermediate level. We have also set up a French
conversation club and a training center for translators. The Alliance is also an official international examinations center.

PowerJet, a jointly- and equally-owned company between
Snecma (Safran) and NPO Saturn, developed and produced the
SaM146, an integrated propulsion system optimized for the
regional aircraft Sukhoi Superjet 100. Born out of a highly
successful international partnership, the SaM146 has
demonstrated exceptional availability since entering service, and
an adaptability to all environments. The SaM146 is certified by the
AESA (European Air Safety Agency).

Thanks to Safran, the Alliance française in Rybinsk has
become a cultural, educational and linguistic center that
holds an essential place in the lives of the residents. The
Alliance enables Russian and French inhabitants alike to
get to know each other better and form bonds. It
contributes to the city’s economic and social
development.

Over six days, every morning, the team will undertake a series of trials, ranging from
racing to cross-country cycling, canoeing, orienteering and archery…The participants
explain their motivation with one voice: “We are proud to work at Safran, and we wanted
to fly the Group’s colors while taking on a sporting challenge.”
The race has a motto: “No transportation, just perspiration!” Our three adventurers
are already experimenting with this attitude, training with determination and
enthusiasm. Commitment, perseverance, cooperation, team spirit and the capacity for
pushing back one’s limits will also play a part. We will relate their athletic and
personal challenges in the next issue of the Safran Philanthropy and Foundations
Newsletter. Watch this space for their future exploits!
