NOTES ON STATEMENTS I AND II
Statement I — General Fund
The General Fund is the University's main operating Fund. It contains the Government grants, student
tees and other income available to meet the general teaching and running expenses of the University, and
the expenditure and appropriations from this income.
Statement II — Combined Statement
The Combined Statement shows the totals of the various items of income and expenditure for all
University Funds, with the exception of the Provident Fund, the Students' Loan Fund, the Melbourne University
Press, the Melbourne University Union, the Recreation Grounds Committee, the Sports Union. Medley Hall.
International House, Graduate House, the Beaurepaire Centre and the Victorian Universities and Schools E x aminations Board, (see statement V to XV).
In addition to the General Fund, the income of which is available to meet the general running expenses
of the University, there are almost two thousand other University funds, each of which must be accounted
for separately.
Many of these funds have resulted from donations and grants for a specific purpose (e.g.. for a research
project or for a scholarship) and can be spent only for that purpose.
A further factor is that the donations or grants may have been made available to meet expenditure over
a longer period than one year, or for a twelve months' period different from the calendar year. Consequently
receipt of a grant and expenditure from that grant may not take place in the same University financial year.

Note:—
The separate Conservatorium of Music Fund, for which the General Fund met the deficit, was discontinued at the end of 1970. Commencing in 1971, the relevant
income and expenditure has been included in the General Fund.
For comparative purposes, inter-item adjustments have been made to some of the 1970 figures, and total 1970 income and expenditure figures have been increased
in this statement so that they differ from the amounts shown in earlier statements.
