Letter from the Producer
Welcome to tonight’s production of The Bully Plays. Our five plays
come from a compilation of twenty-four ten-minute plays written
specifically for middle and high school students to perform and see. The
plays are designed to produce positive interactions and conversations
around the very serious subject of bullying. According to a lot of the
articles the students and I read as we researched these plays, everyone
has either seen bullying, been a bully or been a victim of bullying in our
lives. This subject touches us all!
Unfortunately, since our past election, our nation has seen a spike
in bullying and harassment. That has been true for Oregon City High
School. As an educator and theatre artist I wanted to do something to
help, something positive and uplifting. Art is a powerful way for us as
human beings to explore difficult aspects of our lives. We watch
characters go through challenges and experiences and can learn from
what we observe or possibly relate to the circumstances being portrayed
onstage and take comfort in the fact that we are not alone. My hope is
that these five, very different plays, will help our audiences feel
empowered to stand up to bullying as either a bystander or as a victim.
At the very least I hope the plays can inspire audiences to know it is okay
to tell someone who will stand up and make the bullying behavior stop!
Another really important part of any intervention into bullying
behavior is to try and understand the bully and why they are behaving in
such a negative way. As a class we have all tried to come to terms with
the idea of forgiveness. When we understand and forgive and try to help
a person who bullies, we are on the path of making our school,
community, state and country safer for everyone. Punishment by itself is
not going to effect change in the long run. Punishment alone will only
increase anger and negative behavior will continue. We have to help
people to be better with education, understanding, forgiveness and
positive experiences. Then, and only then, can we hope to make a dent
in the amount of bullying behavior we see around us.
My hope is that our show tonight can be a positive step towards
that goal. I know it has certainly felt good for all of us to be a part of the
conversation and to feel like we are doing something to help. We are so
glad you are here to share this with us. Together we can make things
better.
Enjoy the show, and remember to
stand up to bullying.
