Acoustics: The Science of Sound
Study Sheet – Quiz – Monday, October 5, 2015
 The frequency of a sound determines pitch (high/low).
 Two guitar strings produce the same pitched when plucked because they are
vibrating at the same rate.
 The amplitude of a sound wave determines volume.
 The longest and thickest pipe in a pipe organ produces the lowest sound. The
shortest and thinnest pipe will produce the highest sound.
 Loosening a guitar string will make the pitch lower. Tightening a guitar string
will make the pitch higher.
 Sound waves that are taller will make a louder sound. Sound waves that are
short will make a softer sound.
 Sound waves that are closer together will make a higher sound. Sound waves
that are further apart will make a lower sound.
 Sound moves fastest through a solid, and slowest through a gas.
