EXPRESSION OF INTEREST
Human Resources Specialist – Aboriginal Women in Health Initiative.
Contract deliverables are required between: September 2016 – June 2018 (53 hours in total).
The Okanagan Nation Alliance (ONA) is the Tribal Council for the eight member communities
of the Okanagan Nation which includes Osoyoos Indian Band, Upper Nicola Band, Upper and
Lower Similkameen Indian Bands, Penticton Indian Band, Westbank First Nation, Okanagan
Indian Band and the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation. The ONA’s mandate is to
advance, assert, support and preserve Okanagan Nation title and rights. Further, the ONA is
charged with providing members with a forum to discuss and form positions on areas of common
concern.
Project Overview:
This project is funded through the Federal Ministry for the Status of Women and is entitled
“Increasing Economic Prosperity for Aboriginal Women in the Okanagan Health Sciences
Sector.” The Aboriginal Women in Health Project’s main objective is to identify all barriers to
the advancement of Aboriginal Women in health sciences by conducting a needs assessment of
the social, economic, and institutional challenges in the Okanagan territory. The project
coordinator will engage educational institutions and regional health authorities with the goal of
affecting policy changes to address and remove barriers to successful careers in health for
Aboriginal women, whereby increasing overall community prosperity and Aboriginal
representation in the health care environment.
The project has four key objectives:
1. To increase advancement opportunity for Aboriginal women employees in the health
sciences sector by removing barriers to economic prosperity.
2. To work with health sciences institutions and other employers in developing Human
Resources policies, procedures and practices to help remove employment and
advancement barriers to Aboriginal Women employees.
3. To develop a strategy in conjunction with our Partners to support Aboriginal Women
working in the Health Sciences Sector by focusing on three areas: career planning,
education and employment.
4. To develop a sustainable Aboriginal Women in Health Network in the Okanagan to serve
as a resource and support to Aboriginal Women in the Okanagan Health Sciences Sector.
Scope of the Contract:
 The Human Resource Specialist will work directly with the Aboriginal Women in Health
project coordinator to create mechanisms to facilitate implementation of the project
findings in the modern workplace.
 The Human Resource Specialist will review and interpret findings presented in the
project needs assessment document and will develop a strategy for practical
implementation, facilitation and inclusion of women in the Okanagan Health Sector.
 The Human Resource Specialist will be required to create HR policies and procedures to
support the strategy and facilitate inclusion of women in the Okanagan Health Sector.
