Memorials
Mary, It was last night Dec. 17th that I received your call with the news that
Raplh had passed. I had been out of touch for years and I am deeply
saddened. My greatest memories with Raph was the summer I spent with him
restoring an Aeronca Champ. Those were special times and the cuz' was a
special man.
MARK MALONE HINES, DECEMBER 18, 2010
Thanks Ralphie for the memories. We were best of buddies growing up on
Belfort in the 50’s, I was 7 and you were 6. It was a Tom Sawyer / Huckleberry
Finn experience I will always cherish. The roller skate races down Belfort, your
initiation at Camp Ute Trail, camping out in your back yard, fishing in Turtle
Creek, doing what most young boys didn’t do, living the dream not having a
care in the world, including staying out of trouble. My fondest memory has to
be the time we camped out in your back yard. We were 7 or 8 years old. We
had all the gear, pup tent, sleeping bags, canteens, cooking kits, flashlights,
scout knives; we were ready to brave the new world overnight. After all, we
were alone in a dangerous world, and, at least 50 feet from your Mom’s back
door! We had a great time all night long doing what boys do when there is no
Mom and no Dad. About 4 a.m. I bet you a nickel that you wouldn’t run around
the back yard at least twice naked. You thought about it a minute, and said,
“Let me see the nickel”. After showing you the nickel, you peeled off your
clothes and took off; around the yard you went flying at top speed. On the
second circle, as you came up to the back door, there stood your Dad. He
exclaimed, “Ralphie, where are your clothes?” You froze in shear panic! I don’t
remember what happened after that, but I think I gave you the nickel anyway.
That is the Ralph we all knew and loved. Thanks for the memories, old Buddy.

When we think of Ralph, the term "larger than life" comes to mind. His unique
manner of expressing himself, sharing the table at your hangar until all hours,
"making the runway" late at night... So many memories, too many to list here. I
told somebody the other day Ralph "married" us, as he probably did several
other folks-by making us "jump the broom" late one Saturday night over 14
years ago. It was just the beginning of a friendship we had no idea would be so
suddenly cut short. There are no adequate words to express how much we will
miss such a special person as Ralph.
KATE AND PAT KYER, DECEMBER 3, 2010
Mary, I was so sorry to hear about Ralph and to know how it deeply saddened
Ricky. I only met you and Ralph my one trip to visit and it was a memorable
one. Ralph said lets go up for a ride and instead of on the road he's going
through the dirt to take off. Then we get up there and he decides to do some
rolls and flips. I was white as a sheet and never saw a thing. Then the big
music fest we had in the hanger only for me to hear RAlph hollering when i
wrecked the golf cart.(that wasn't funny and i felt so bad). My first impression
of you both were that you were wonderful people and Ralph kept me laughing. I
had a ball of fun with you guys. My prayers are with you during this time and
I'm sure Ralph is flying high in a much better place. Hugs to you!
CURTIS HIGGINS, DECEMBER 1, 2010
From the bottom of our hearts, we are saddened by this news. Our thoughts
and prayers are with Mary, and all of Ralph's extended family of friends. A true
icon, the world is lessened by his passing. Heaven just got a lot more
interesting. Hugh, KD, and Quenten.
HUGH QUENTEN COOK, DECEMBER 1, 2010
There are a few unique people at Aero Country Airport that just cannot be
replaced. Ralph was one of those persons that will leave a void in the
personality of the airport. If you ever dropped by his hangar, no matter what he
was doing, he always stopped his task at hand, and made you feel welcome.
Most people he met more than once considered him a friend.
JOHN LANSDEN, NOVEMBER 30, 2010
My memories of Ralphie were of his infant years. I was a neighbor to his
parents and remember when he was a new born baby....he was adorable and
we were all so excited. My siblings and I loved his parents Ralph & Mary Lee
as if they were related to us. I have lost track of Mary but, for years she kept
us posted about her dear son Ralph Jr. He was her delight. My deepest
sympathy and condolences to his family and they will be in my prayers and my
heart.
PATRICIA (PAT) RUTH BALLEW-VERNON, NOVEMBER 30, 2010
Ralph you are someone who knew no strangers, I will remember the crawfish
boil we had and stuffed potatoes, onions, and sausage in panty hose. And he
made the best coffee drinks ever. You will be truely missed.

MIKE GALLAWAY, NOVEMBER 30, 2010
I grew up on aero country airport, and one of the things that all my childhood
memories have in common is Ralph. He and Mary were so nice to me and
treated me as if I was family. I would spend nights at their house, Ralph and I
would stay up shooting pool. He took me fishing. At the airport, he would
taking me flying and running around with him. I would always find myself at his
hanger listening to stories of airshows, or listening to him play guitar. I will
miss Ralph a great deal..
SCOTT CREEKMORE, NOVEMBER 30, 2010
What a guy, If you ever met Ralph… You would know Him… and he would
take the time to know you. At no time did you ever have to guess what was on
his mind… At Aero Country meetings Ralph would always have his words of
advise… we will try to live up to some of them, and others just have a laugh
but always … always, we will love and remember Ralph’s for he had a great
love for this airport, its pilots, and his friends.. Thank You Ralph Blue Sky’s Tailwinds and a little Crown Blimpee
MIKE HANCE, NOVEMBER 30, 2010
We will miss you! My first memory of Ralph is of him pulling up at Swick-ville
south in the "yellow Phone booth" as Dad would say. Playing guitar until 3 AM.
Say hello to Dad, Mom and Mike.
JANICE "SWICK CHICK" CLARK IRWIN, NOVEMBER 30, 2010
I'll always remember Ralph in his overalls, arriving in his old Buick, at West
Lakes Club. He was a great fisherman and friend.
BILL GIBBONS, NOVEMBER 30, 2010
Ralph was part of the family... Aero Country will not be the same. My
condolences to all family and friends. "Silver wings Shining in the sunlight
Roaring engines Headed somewhere in flight They're taking you away And
leaving me lonely Silver wings Slowly fading out of sight Don't leave me I cry
Don't take that airplane ride But you've locked me out of your mind And left me
standing here behind Silver wings Shining in the sunlight Roaring engines
Headed somewhere in flight They're taking you away And leaving me lonely
Silver wings Slowly fading out of sight"
ROSE ELLA MCCLEARY, NOVEMBER 30, 2010

Ralph was a man of many sayings. Those that knew him probably heard most
of them. I remember one night talking about how dark it was, and Ralph
said,"it's darker than the inside of a rock". Ralph was a man of many talents
and he will be truly missed by all that knew him. He was an Aero-Country Icon.
RICHARD EARL FERGUSON, NOVEMBER 29, 2010
Ralph will be remembered as the heart and soul of Aero Country. He also
contributed a great deal of time and resources to IAC Chapter 24. Ralph was
also one of the finest airshow pilots, announcers and all around aviators I have
had the privilege to know. He was a kind and generous man and will be greatly
missed by many.
